    Pullman-Standard construction trades (1944-45); crew (1945-47)
    Limitations
Ship-specific history and specifications only; no asbestos or material content. NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation (page states 'All pages copyright NavSource Naval History'), not a primary Navy registry, but its milestone dates and specification block are the most complete ship-specific record located for this hull. No battle star or named combat landing is listed on this page - only theater/occupation service medals.

Page states 'decommissioned on 11 December 1946 and transferred to China' and explicitly notes no commanding officers are listed in its database for this hull ('We don't have any commands listed for USS LSM 339').

    Limitations
Secondary naval-history compilation, not a primary registry or official Navy source - used only to cross-check NavSource's construction dates (matches) and to flag a disposition-date conflict (does not match). No specifications, campaign, or asbestos content. No commanding-officer data (contradicted by NavSource, which does list two).

  4. [4]DANFS (history.navy.mil) search: direct URL and site/web search for an LSM-339 ship-history entry - no entry exists [other_primary]

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
No DANFS (Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships) entry exists for USS LSM-339. Direct URL https://www.history.navy.mil/research/histories/ship-histories/danfs/l/lsm-339.html returns HTTP 404 (confirmed via direct request, 2026-10-01). Web search surfaced no alternate DANFS URL for this hull. DANFS entries exist for some named LSM-derivative vessels (e.g., Hunting, LSM-398) but not for this unnamed hull-number-only LSM.

    Limitations
Absence of a DANFS entry is consistent with DANFS's general practice of not covering unnamed small craft individually; it is not evidence of anything about the ship's history or condition, asbestos-related or otherwise.

  5. [5]Era inference built on: NavSource specification block (diesel-powered LSM-1-class landing ship, no steam plant); builder identity as a WWII-converted railcar manufacturer (Pullman-Standard, Chicago) with no located NIOSH/OSHA asbestos survey for that yard's shipbuilding division; general LSM-1-class design literature on cramped diesel-engine-room and berthing-compartment layout [other_primary]
    Locator
NavSource 10/14/14339.htm specifications block; general LSM-1-class design characteristics (diesel propulsion, no steam plant)
    Finding type
    asbestos_application
    Finding
An LSM-1-class landing ship medium built 1944-45 falls inside the WWII shipbuilding era in which asbestos-containing thermal and acoustic insulation, gaskets, and packing were standard Navy specification materials. Era-standard applications aboard a diesel-powered vessel of this type and period were engine-room and exhaust-piping lagging, gaskets, valve packing, and pipe insulation running through crew berthing spaces given the ship's small, cramped hull. No steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of larger steam-propelled combatants does not apply.

    Limitations
Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation survey, material list, work package, or abatement record located for LSM-339. Names era-standard applications, not confirmed installed materials. No quantity, no manufacturer attribution for this hull. No asbestos survey or NIOSH/OSHA record for Pullman-Standard's shipyard division was located to even support yard-level (rather than purely era-level) inference - a weaker evidentiary basis than, e.g., Electric Boat/Groton for other hulls in this dataset.

  6. [6]Batch-6150 search ledger (this record): NavSource; uboat.net; DANFS (no entry); NARA catalog search (no hull-specific photograph located); Wikipedia LSM list/class articles (no entry/no asbestos content); Pullman-Standard shipyard background search (no NIOSH/OSHA survey located); CourtListener (opinion type - zero results; docket/RECAP type - fleet-wide pacing limit this session, retried multiple times) [other_primary]
    Locator
    search_ledger rows sl-uss-lsm-339-lsm339-01 through -10
    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or verified litigation naming USS LSM-339 was found in the public sources searched. CourtListener opinion-type search (type=o) for both "USS LSM-339" and "LSM-339" returned zero results (verified 2026-10-01, HTTP 200 authenticated responses via the required helper script). CourtListener docket/RECAP-type search (type=r) could not be completed this session - the helper script reported the fleet-wide shared request budget was momentarily spent on every retry (not a 429 ban; paced ~114/hr fleet-wide) - logged as blocked, not as a negative result for that search type specifically.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard. The RECAP/docket-type CourtListener search is a genuine open gap for this hull (pacing-blocked, not run to completion) - opinion-type coverage is complete and negative. No secondary web sweep surfaced any law-firm or marketing page naming this specific hull either (a notable contrast to higher-profile hulls in this dataset), which is itself consistent with this being a very low-visibility, non-combat-decorated, foreign-transferred small craft.
