    Finding
USS LSM-370 was laid down 2 December 1944 at Brown Shipbuilding Co., Houston, Texas; launched 23 December 1944; commissioned 24 January 1945 with Lt. Louis L. Smith, USNR, in command; served in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater in LSM Flotilla Thirteen (LCDR C. L. Weigle, USN), LSM Group Thirty-Seven (LCDR W. J. Chisholm, USNR), LSM Division Seventy-Four; performed post-war occupation service in the Far East 5-23 September 1945 and 8 October-14 November 1945; decommissioned 20 June 1946 at Green Cove Springs, Florida; laid up in the Atlantic Reserve Fleet, Florida Group; struck from the Naval Register on a date the source gives as unknown; and was transferred 15 July 1959 to Venezuela for cannibalization and scrapping, sold 1959.

    Population
Brown Shipbuilding construction trades; USS LSM-370 crew; Far East occupation-service personnel
    Limitations
Ship-specific historical timeline from a volunteer naval-history archive; the page does not document asbestos, an asbestos survey, or material quantities. NavSource states the Naval Register strike date was unknown; a secondary aggregator (uboat.net) asserts 15 January 1958, which remains unverified. The NavSource text contains a typographical slip rendering the ship as 'USS LST-370' in the occupation-service sentence; the page subject is LSM-370.

    Finding
The page reports a 520-ton light displacement, 743-ton landing displacement, 1,095-ton full-load displacement, 203 feet 6 inches length, 34 feet 6 inches beam, 13.2-knot maximum speed, complement of 5 officers and 54 enlisted, armament of one twin bow-mounted 40mm gun and four single 20mm mounts, troop accommodations of 2 officers and 46 enlisted, and two Fairbanks Morse 38D81/8X10 reversible diesel engines with hydraulic clutch and direct drive to twin propellers at 2,800 shaft horsepower.

NHHC page for NARA Photo 80-G-176520, Description and Catalog fields
    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
NHHC identifies a Bureau of Ships camouflage drawing (Measure 31, Design 17L) for the LSM-1 class, dated 13 July 1944, held in the National Archives collections. NavSource identifies USS LSM-370 as an LSM-1-class landing ship medium, so this confirms official Navy/NARA documentation for the class during this hull's construction and service period.

  4. [4]NHHC DANFS appendix, 'LSM and LSM(R) Histories' (archived copy; live page returned 404 on 2026-10-01) [nhhc_danfs]
    Locator
NHHC 'LSM and LSM(R) Histories' page, full text
    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
NHHC states that ships bearing only a designation, such as LSM, were not included in the Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships, and that the Naval Historical Center's Ships History Office scanned a compiled history of the LSMs and LSM(R)s prepared by Captain James B. Birindelli, SC, USNR (Ret.), distributed on CD-ROM SH-0068. This explains the absence of a DANFS entry for USS LSM-370 and identifies the official compiled LSM history as an archival lead.

    Limitations
Archived official page (Wayback capture 15 June 2015); the live NHHC URL returned 404 at research time. The page documents DANFS coverage policy and the existence of the compiled LSM history; it does not address asbestos and the CD-ROM contents were not retrieved.

    Limitations
Program-level context, not a hull-specific finding. The source does not identify USS LSM-370, a particular component aboard it, an exposure event, or a quantity; full text was not retrieved (gao.gov returned HTTP 403 to automated fetch on 2026-10-01) - content via product-page description.

    Locator
    search_ledger rows sl-uss-lsm-370-lsm370-01 through -10
    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos survey, abatement record, hazmat disclosure, or asbestos litigation record naming USS LSM-370 was located in the sources searched. The only CourtListener opinion hit was a Texas criminal appeal unrelated to the vessel (name collision). This is a search result, not proof that asbestos was absent from the vessel.

    Limitations
CourtListener exact-name and exact-hull searches were made through the authenticated helper for opinions and dockets; quoted queries returned zero results and unquoted queries returned one unrelated Texas criminal opinion plus tokenization-noise docket matches. Absence of a located record does not establish absence of asbestos or defeat any exposure claim.
