WWII construction trades (Brown Shipbuilding, Houston, 1944-45); commissioning crew 1945-1946
    Limitations
Volunteer-maintained archive transcribing a published unit history (Turner Publishing, 1997); no DANFS entry exists for this hull for cross-check, and the struck date is not recorded. Establishes identity, milestones, and disposal only - contains no asbestos information.

    Finding
Propulsion was diesel, not steam: two Fairbanks Morse (model 38D8-1/8 x10, reversible with hydraulic clutch) diesel engines, direct drive, 1,440 BHP each at 720 rpm, twin propellers totaling 2,800 shp; ship's service generators two diesel-drive 100 kW 450 V A.C. and one diesel-drive 20 kW 120 V D.C. Complement 5 officers and 54 enlisted; troop accommodations 2 officers and 46 enlisted. Displacement 520 t. light / 1,095 t. fully loaded; length 203'6"; speed 13.2 kts.

    Limitations
Specifications are class-standard figures republished on this hull's page, not a hull survey; they establish the absence of a steam plant, which bounds which asbestos pathways are even plausible (no boiler/turbine lagging) - they do not establish presence or absence of asbestos in any system.

    Finding type

    Finding
GAO reviewed the use of asbestos in Navy ships, the cost of removing it, and worker-protection efforts; the Navy's 1975 policy was to remove and replace with nonasbestos materials only insulation that was damaged or had to be removed for repairs, modified in 1979 to selective replacement in high-maintenance areas. This documents that asbestos insulation was in general use across Navy ship construction of this hull's era. Applied to a diesel amphibious of 1944-45, the era-standard applications are thermal insulation, machinery and exhaust lagging, gaskets, valve packing, and electrical insulation.

    Population
Navy shipyard workers (program level, 1970s); not hull-specific
    Limitations
Program-level documentation: GAO fieldwork was the Long Beach and Norfolk Naval Shipyards, decades after this hull's construction and U.S. service; the report does not name this hull or her class and does not establish that asbestos was or remains aboard. All ship-level application is era inference, not ship-proven; no quantity or present-day presence is established.

    Finding
NARA holds this ship's muster rolls covering 26 February 1945 (her commissioning date) through 1 July 1946 - crew name lists spanning nearly her entire commissioned life, ending about six weeks before her 14 August 1946 decommissioning. Catalog status Unrestricted; scanned as part of the Ancestry-NARA collaboration; physical microfilm at NARA II, College Park, MD.

Enlisted and officer crew of LSM-386, 1945-02-26 to 1946-07-01 (named individuals)
    Limitations
Catalog description only - the rolls themselves were not consulted. Muster rolls establish who served aboard (population evidence) but contain no asbestos information; individual exposure cannot be inferred from presence on a crew list. Her deck logs are not among NARA's digitized deck logs (published digitized list checked 2026-10-01 - other LSM hulls present, LSM-386 absent).

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or docketed case naming LSM-386 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CourtListener returned zero results for 'LSM-386' (opinions and dockets), 'USS LSM-386', and 'LSM 386' (opinions) - clean negatives through the authenticated, rate-limited helper. No authoritative yard-level asbestos documentation was located for Brown Shipbuilding Co., Houston; what circulates is law-firm marketing material, excluded by source policy.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1944-45 hull of this type is era-consistent with retained asbestos applications, and her post-1947 Republic of China service is undocumented. Does not establish that asbestos is or is not present; does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
