The page's history text is credited to a secondary published work (Turner Publishing, 1997). Contains no asbestos content. - Finding
- A contemporaneous official Navy action report names this hull: Task Group 54.3 (Nagasaki Group), part of the Southern Occupation Group (TG 54.1) under TF 54 Fifth Amphibious Force, embarked the 2nd Marine Division at Saipan and landed occupation troops and equipment in the Nagasaki harbor area in September 1945 without enemy opposition. The group composition list places LSM-462 in LSM Flotilla 16 (temp), LSM Unit Two (Lt. Cary Lane), with LSMs 450(F), 448, 465, 263, 462, 452, 122, 466, 103, and 286. The group loading table lists LSM-462 with 39 personnel embarked (cargo-tonnage column OCR-degraded). The report's chronology records ComLSMFlot 16 ordered (message date-time group 1040) to form a task unit - LSMs 78, 94, 103, 122, 170, 227, 253, 286, 307, 309, 452, 462, 465 et al. in company, USS Roberts (DE-749) escorting - to depart Nagasaki at 1400 on 26 September when ready for sea, for Okinawa, there to load 10th Army Corps elements, onward routing to Hiro Wan. A NavSource photograph independently places LSM-462 off-loading equipment at Kure Air Station (on Hiro Wan) on 16 October 1945.

- 52-page scanned document with no text layer; content extracted by OCR (tesseract) of pages 1-20, 37, and 41-52 - reading is reliable for the composition list, loading table, and departure order naming LSM-462, but full page-by-page verification is not claimed. Group-level document: it names the hull in task organization, loading, and departure records but is not a ship-generated report and carries no material or asbestos content.

- Finding
- Archival photography documents this hull's postwar presence: berthed at Long Beach Naval Shipyard on 21 January 1952 (U.S. Navy photo in the collections of the U.S. National Archives, Riverside, Identifier 15686 - a yard-presence record, not a work record); operating off San Diego circa 1949 in company with USS Curtiss (AV-4) (NHHC photo NH 97415); and in Republic of Korea Navy service as ROKS Gadeok (LSM-653) during exercise Team Spirit '82 (DoD photo DN-ST-82-06901). These establish West Coast operations through 1952 and ROKN service into 1982.

- Finding
- The class operating manual confirms the propulsion configuration documented for this hull: two diesel-engine makes were used across LSM-class vessels - Fairbanks-Morse (model 38D8-1/8) or General Motors (model 16-27x) - direct drive, no reduction gear; and the auxiliary machinery section documents a single small oil-fired water-tube auxiliary steam boiler (55 psi working pressure) aboard. No asbestos, lagging, insulation, magnesia, or pipe-covering material specification appears in the chapters reviewed (ch. 30 Main Propelling Machinery; ch. 31-9 Boilers; ch. 32 Pumps, Tanks and Piping Systems) - the manual is an operational SOP, not a construction-materials specification.

- Limitations
- Class-level manual issued to a sister hull (LSM-294), not to LSM-462 - it documents type-standard machinery, not this hull's as-built materials. Absence of insulation specifications in reviewed chapters is a limited finding: only three technical chapters were OCR-reviewed, and construction material lists are outside the manual's scope. No asbestos content found or claimed.

- Finding
- GAO documented that the Navy used asbestos insulation extensively aboard ships and did not begin substituting alternative insulation materials until the early 1970s - spanning this hull's entire U.S. Navy construction (January-March 1945) and service era (1945-1955), and the period in which she remained on the Naval Register (to 15 November 1974).

- Finding
- A diesel-driven amphibious landing ship built January-March 1945 at a wartime Navy-contract yard sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era. Era-standard asbestos applications aboard a diesel amphibious hull of this type and period were machinery and exhaust insulation, gaskets, valve packing, auxiliary-boiler and steam-line lagging (the class carried one small 55-psi auxiliary oil-fired boiler - a limited steam footprint, not a main propulsion plant), interior insulation and deck coverings, and brake linings on winches and windlass. The boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam-driven combatants does not apply to the main plant; the small auxiliary boiler and its piping are the relevant steam-side surface.

Product names are normalized era terms; no manufacturer attribution for this hull. Her 42 years of ROKN service (1955-1997) and any refit/abatement are undocumented.

- CORRECTIONS: (1) NavSource captions the commissioning-crew photograph 'Little Creek Amphibious Base, Norfolk, VA., January 1944' - an impossible date, since the keel was not laid until 13 January 1945 and she commissioned 4 March 1945 in Houston; the correct year is presumably 1945. (2) NavSource captions the Shanghai photograph 'circa January 1945' - likewise inconsistent: the ship commissioned in March 1945 and her documented China service ran September 1945-February 1946, so the photograph is most consistent with circa January 1946. (3) Wikipedia's article body states ROKS Gadeok was 'acquired ... on 16 February 1956' - a typo contradicted by the article's own infobox (16 February 1955) and by NavSource (transfer on loan the same day as USN decommissioning, 16 February 1955); the 1955 date is carried.

- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or verified litigation naming USS LSM-462 (LSM-462; ROKS Gadeok, LSM-605/LSM-653) was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CourtListener returned zero results on the opinion index for 'LSM-462', 'LSM 462', and 'Gadeok', and zero results on the RECAP docket index for 'LSM-462' (all 2026-10-01); the 'USS LSM-462' opinion variant remained behind the fleet pacing window at write time - logged as an open variant, not a negative. Secondary web sweeps surfaced only law-firm marketing content asserting asbestos aboard Brown Shipbuilding products generally - excluded by source policy.

- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1945-built hull sits inside the documented Navy asbestos era, and absence here reflects the thin public record for an unnamed numbered landing ship (no DANFS entry, no NVR entry, no digitized deck logs located). Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
