- Finding
- NavSource identifies this LSM-1-class hull as laid down 3 February 1945 at Brown Shipbuilding Co., Houston; launched 24 February; commissioned 25 March 1945 under LT. Russell W. Boys, USN; assigned to LSM Flotilla Fifteen, Group Forty-Four, Division Ninety; assigned to Far East occupation service 20 September-26 November 1945; decommissioned at Astoria, Oregon, 23 July 1946; laid up with the Pacific Reserve Fleet, Columbia River Group; transferred to Taiwan 6 February 1959 and renumbered LSM-355; and reported scrapped in 1973. The source lists the Naval Register strike date as unknown. Its specifications give a 203 ft 6 in diesel landing ship with a complement of 5 officers and 54 enlisted, powered by two Fairbanks-Morse diesels, with no steam plant. Its photo captions place LSM-474 at Sasebo, Kyushu, 23 September 1945, unloading 5th Marine Division tanks at Sasebo in September 1945, and at Matsuyama, Shikoku, 25 October 1945 transporting the 132nd Combat Engineers, 77th Army Division with other LSMs.

- Volunteer archival compilation using a cited published history extract; live URL verified. It documents identity, service and specifications, not asbestos, materials, individual exposure, quantity, or present condition. The reported 1973 scrapping has not been independently corroborated by a government disposal record.

- Locator
- Brown Shipbuilding yard-table row 281, LSM 474
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- The Brown Shipbuilding yard table identifies yard hull 281 as LSM 474, a landing ship laid down 3 February 1945, launched 24 February 1945, and delivered 25 March 1945. Those dates match the ship-specific NavSource and uboat.net records.

[4]Naval History and Heritage Command, 'LSM and LSM(R) Histories' (archived 2015-06-15 capture; live NHHC page unavailable) [nhhc_danfs]
- Locator
- Archived page paragraphs describing DANFS scope and CD-ROM SH-0068
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- NHHC explains that DANFS was designed for commissioned Navy ships with assigned names and that ships bearing only a designation, such as LSM, were not included. It says LSM and LSM(R) histories were instead scanned as a non-word-searchable compilation by Captain James B. Birindelli and distributed on CD-ROM SH-0068. The absence of a DANFS entry for LSM-474 is therefore a series-design exclusion, not a conclusion about the ship's service or materials.

[5]National Archives, 'Navy Deck Logs Available in the National Archives Catalog' [other_primary]
- Locator
- Digitized deck-log alphabetical list, LSM entries
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- NARA's online Navy deck-log catalog does not list LSM-474 among its digitized LSM entries. The catalog's selected digitized LSM listings include LSM-412, LSM-419, LSM-448, LSM-455, and LSM-462, but no LSM-474. The ship's 1945-46 deck logs, if extant, require an archival holdings inquiry rather than download from this online list.

- Limitations
- The list establishes only that this ship was not located in this digitized catalog list; it does not prove that deck logs or other records do not survive. Deck logs would primarily document operations, not necessarily materials or asbestos.

[6]GAO, Navy Efforts To Protect Workers From Asbestos Exposure, HRD-80-2 (Oct. 18, 1979) (product page access blocked at research time) [gao]
- Locator
- GAO product page; direct access returned HTTP 403, so full text was not retrieved
- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- Class/era assessment: this was a diesel-powered Navy landing ship built in 1945, during the Navy's documented historical asbestos-use era. Potential period applications for a diesel amphibious ship include machinery and exhaust thermal insulation, gaskets, packing, electrical insulation, and accommodation insulation. Its documented diesel propulsion means boiler and steam-line lagging should not be attributed to this hull.

- Navy shipyard workers and Navy asbestos-control program
- Limitations
- Program/era context, not a hull record. The GAO URL was checked live but blocked by HTTP 403; this row therefore relies only on the report's identified subject and is deliberately limited. It does not establish any asbestos-containing material, product, quantity, location, condition, exposure, causation, or legal eligibility aboard LSM-474.

[7]CourtListener API v4 via authenticated cl-auth-search.py; exact-name opinion query 'USS LSM-474' [other_primary]
- Locator
- Authenticated helper output: count 0; follow-on docket request stopped by fleet pacing limiter
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos litigation record was located in the completed portion of the required CourtListener sweep. The authenticated CourtListener v4 opinion search for the exact name 'USS LSM-474' returned zero results. Before the required docket and hull-number searches could be completed, the fleet-wide pacing helper stopped the next request; no anonymous, raw, or v3 CourtListener request was made.

- Limitations
- This is a partial litigation sweep, not proof of no litigation or no asbestos. Exact-name docket, hull-number opinion, and hull-number docket searches remain incomplete because the fleet limiter required stand-down. The completed zero-result opinion search establishes neither exposure nor absence of exposure.
