- DANFS record for this hull: LSM-5 (dp. 900; l. 203'6"; b. 34'; dr. 6'11" fwd, 3'5" aft; s. 13 k.; a. 2 40mm, 4 20mm; cpl. 58) was laid down at the Brown Shipbuilding Corp., Houston, Tex., on 1 March 1944; launched 9 April 1944; and commissioned 22 May 1944, Lt. Arthur K. Henderson, USNR, in command. Reported to ComPhiTraLant for duty and a shakedown cruise; assigned to the Pacific Theater, transited the Panama Canal 12 February 1945 and reported to CinCPac 13 February 1945. Deemed not essential to the defense of the United States after the war, decommissioned 8 July 1946 at Saipan and struck from the Navy list 15 August 1946.

- Brown Shipbuilding construction trades 1944; wartime and occupation-era crew (design complement 58)
- Limitations
- DANFS documents service history and design specifications, not materials or asbestos content. The printed shakedown report date (1 May) precedes the printed commissioning date (22 May 1944) and the decommission sentence contains a transcription typo ('on 8 July 1946 and Saipan' read as 'at Saipan'); both are carried in gaps. Live NHHC DANFS page serves 404 - verbatim HyperWar/ibiblio transcription cited.

[2]U.S.S. LSM #5, Ship's History Supplement, 1 October 1945 to 31 December 1945 (Serial 89, 3 February 1946; transcribed with the DANFS entry by the HyperWar Foundation) [nhhc_danfs]
- Locator
- Ship's History Supplement transcript (LSM5/A12-1/VSU:fa, Serial 89), chronological entries Oct-Dec 1945
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- The ship's own history supplement documents occupation duty: 1-7 October 1945 at Saishu Island, Korea, dumping confiscated Japanese equipment and disarming the Japanese Army; Army personnel lift to Jinsen and lighterage duty there through October and 8 November - 4 December 1945; on 1 November 1945 answered USS Bridge (AF-1), mined off Fusan, transferred all pumping facilities, attempted a tow, and escorted her to safety; Guam 12-17 December; on 19 December 1945 Lt. (jg) Victor S. Underwood, USNR, relieved Lt. Henderson after 19 months in command; sailed Saipan for Marcus Island 28 December; on 31 December 1945 struck a reef amidships starboard entering the channel at Marcus Island - engine room flooded to 8 feet, all power lost, ship beached and settled aft of the conn, salvage and unloading begun.

- Limitations
- Primary ship-generated administrative record transcribed by a third party (HyperWar); documents operations and the casualty, not materials aboard. The supplement ends 31 December 1945 - the salvage outcome and the ship's return to Saipan are not covered by this document. Contains no asbestos content.

- NavSource is a volunteer-run photographic archive citing Turner Publishing's LSM-LSMR history; it is the standard hull-level reference where NHHC coverage is thin, but it is not itself an official source. Its decommission date (9 July) conflicts with DANFS (8 July), its CO relief date (20 December) conflicts with the ship's own supplement (19 December), and its striking date (unknown) conflicts with DANFS (15 August 1946) - all carried in gaps. Contains no asbestos content.

[4]NavSource specifications block (diesel propulsion, 1944 build) + Atlas shipyard dataset check (Brown Shipbuilding absent) + GAO HRD-80-2 era context [other_primary]
- Locator
- NavSource specifications block; shipyards.json yard_id list (no Brown/Houston builder match)
- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- Era inference: a diesel-powered LSM-1 class landing ship built in 1944 would era-consistently have carried asbestos in machinery and exhaust lagging, gaskets, valve packing, electrical insulation, and fireproofing. Propulsion was two Fairbanks-Morse diesels, direct drive - there is no steam plant, so boiler and turbine lagging are not in this hull's inference set. Builder Brown Shipbuilding Corp. (Houston) is not present in the Atlas shipyard dataset (37 yard_ids checked 2026-10-02), so no yard-level industrial-hygiene documentation attaches; the absence is carried in gaps.

- Class/era inference only - no ship-specific finding is made or implied. No plan, specification, or material list for this hull was located; NARA RG 19 'General Information Books' per-vessel material specifications are the archival lead for hull-level confirmation (retrieval not performed).

[5]CourtListener API v4 searches, 2026-10-02: opinion "LSM-5" (0), opinion "USS LSM-5" (0), docket "USS LSM-5" (0), docket "LSM-5" (15 hits, all name collisions) [court_record]
- Locator
- CourtListener API v4 search endpoint (type=o and type=r), queries as listed; 15 docket results individually classified in the search ledger
- Finding type
- litigation_documented
- Finding
- No qualifying asbestos litigation, and no litigation of any kind naming this hull, was located. Opinion searches for "LSM-5" and "USS LSM-5" returned zero results. The docket (RECAP) search for "LSM-5" returned 15 hits, each reviewed and classified as a name collision - the string matches part numbers, exhibit labels, or judicial-initial strings inside unrelated matters (employment discrimination, patent, FLSA, ERISA, FCRA, Tucker Act tax, prisoner civil-rights, and corporate bankruptcy dockets, 1998-2022); none is asbestos litigation and none references any vessel. The docket search for "USS LSM-5" returned zero results.

- Limitations
- A negative CourtListener result is bounded: RECAP coverage is incomplete for pre-2000s state-court asbestos filings, and a docket that never reached PACER or an opinion never published would not appear. This row records that no litigation naming the hull was found, not that none exists. The docket search was initially throttled by the fleet pacing budget (HTTP 429) and completed on a later retry the same session.

- Finding type

- Finding
- GAO documented the Navy's asbestos-protection program: Navy ships of the World War II construction era were built with asbestos insulation, and the Navy's insulation-removal policies date from the mid-1970s - three decades after this hull's 1944 construction and 1946 disposal.
