- The official Navy history card for this hull records: built by Brown Shipbuilding Co. of Houston, TX; keel laid 29 July 1944; launched 22 August 1944; accepted by the Navy 16 September 1944 and commissioned 17 September 1944, Lt. James F. Barlow USNR assuming command; reported to ComPhibTraLant for duty and shakedown 28 September 1944; arrived Canal Zone and reported to CinCPac for duty 30 October 1944. 'LSM-72 served in the Pacific Theater for the duration of the war and participated in the assault and occupation of Okinawa from 9 April to 17 June 1945. The ship was awarded one battle star for this service in World War II.' Disposal chain: on 20 December 1945 CNO directed LSM-72 to sail to the Canal Zone and report to CinCLant for routing to Norfolk, VA, reporting to Com 5 for disposal; on 26 December 1945 CNO authorized Com 5 to decommission the ship and transfer her to the Maritime Commission or recommend Inspection and Survey action; reported to Com 5 for disposal 14 March 1946; considered in serviceable condition by AIM Norfolk 27 March 1946; decommissioned 5 April 1946 at Norfolk; declared not essential to the defense of the U.S. by SECNAV and authorized for disposal 6 May 1946; stricken from the Naval Vessel Register 5 June 1946.

- Limitations
- Primary ship-history document, but a scanned card rather than a live DANFS HTML entry (no DANFS page exists for this hull - verified 404 at history.navy.mil). Contains no asbestos or material content. Card recounts only the Okinawa operation and credits 'one battle star' - it omits the Zambales-Subic Bay operation of 29-31 January 1945 that NavSource lists, and conflicts with NavSource's 'two battle stars' claim (see gaps). Card ends at the 1946 striking; the 1947 sale is documented by other rows.

- Brown Shipbuilding construction trades (1944); ship's company (5 officers + 54 enlisted design complement) plus embarked troops (2 officers + 46 enlisted capacity); Capitol Salvage shipbreakers (1947-48, if scrapping proceeded as reported)
- Limitations
- NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - its milestone dates track the official history card where that card speaks. Two documented conflicts: 'two battle stars + NUC' here vs 'one battle star' on the official card, and the Zambales-Subic campaign appears here but not on the card (see gaps). The NUC and Philippine PUC are shown as ribbon graphics; the underlying award citations were not located. Contains no asbestos content.

- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- The compiled Navy construction table records for this hull: 'LSM-72 | Brown SB | Houston TX | 17-Sep-44 | sold to Capitol Salvage 1947 for scrapping' - corroborating builder, commissioning date, buyer, and adding 'for scrapping' as the stated purpose of the 1947 sale.

- Limitations
- Reputable compiled secondary reference, not a disposal instrument - 'for scrapping' states the purpose of the sale, and NavSource separately records 'fate unknown'; no breakup contract, invoice, or location is documented. Sibling rows confirm LSM-70 to Hugo Neu 1948 and LSM-74 to Jeffersonville Boat & Machine 1948, consistent with the post-war LSM disposal pattern. Contains no asbestos content. njscuba.net mirror of the same table returned HTTP 406/500 to direct fetch but was readable via extraction service; navalmarinearchive.com copy verified live (HTTP 200).

[5]Era inference built on: NavSource specifications (2 x Fairbanks-Morse diesels, direct drive - no steam plant); GAO HRD-80-2 Navy asbestos-era documentation (see ev-05); general era shipbuilding practice at Gulf Coast yards of WWII [other_primary]
- Locator
- NavSource specifications block (diesel plant); GAO HRD-80-2 product page (era documentation)
- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- A diesel-powered amphibious landing ship built in 1944 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era; era-standard applications aboard a small diesel amphibious ship of this type were thermal insulation and lagging on engines and exhaust uptakes, gaskets and valve packing in machinery systems, electrical insulation, accommodation-space insulation, and brake linings on winches and windlass. As a diesel ship she carried no boilers or steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply - but the confined-volume exposure dynamic of a 203-ft landing ship applies to whatever era insulation was fitted.

- Limitations
- Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation survey, material list, work package, or builder's specification sheet located for LSM-72. Names era-standard applications, not confirmed installed materials. No quantity. No manufacturer attribution for this hull. Brown Shipbuilding asbestos claims exist only on excluded law-firm/marketing sites - no primary yard-level documentation was located for this builder.

[6]GAO, Navy Efforts To Protect Workers From Asbestos Exposure, HRD-80-2 (Oct 18, 1979) [gao]
- Locator
- GAO product page HRD-80-2, Highlights section
- Finding type
- gov_survey
- Finding
- GAO reviewed the Navy's efforts to protect workers from asbestos exposure, specifically 'the use of asbestos in Navy ships, the cost of removing asbestos from Navy ships, and compensation programs for asbestos-related disabilities,' documenting the Navy's asbestos-insulation era - spanning this hull's entire construction (1944) and service life (1944-1946); Navy policy as of 1975 was to remove and replace asbestos insulation only when damaged or necessary for repairs, modified in 1979 toward selective replacement in high-maintenance areas.

[7]NARA 'Navy Deck Logs Available in the National Archives Catalog' landing page (RG 24 deck-log series); WWII war diaries (RG 38) for LSM-72 / LSM Flotilla Six / LSM Group Seventeen [other_primary]
- Locator
- archives.gov/research/military/logbooks/navy-online (verified live); catalog.archives.gov API endpoints returned JS app shell (blocked)
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- Archival leads for this hull: NARA holds WWII-era deck logs in RG 24 (series partially closed/digitized unevenly; hull-specific LSM-72 items not located in the online catalog - catalog.archives.gov is JS-rendered and API requests returned the application shell rather than records). WWII war diaries for numbered LSM units exist in RG 38 (e.g., NHHC cites an LSM-270 war diary in its Okinawa coverage); no LSM-72 or LSM Group Seventeen diary was located in the digitized indexes searched. The contemporaneous Okinawa photographs on NavSource are donated prints, not archived series items.

- Locator

- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or docketed case naming USS LSM-72 (LSM-72) was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CourtListener was searched this session - authenticated API v4, four queries ('LSM-72' and 'LSM 72' across opinion type=o and docket type=r indexes) - all returned zero results: a genuine no-result, not a blocked query. The secondary-web sweep surfaced no asbestos claims naming this hull at all, law-firm or otherwise.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - the hull's 1944 construction sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era, and era inference stands separately. The 1947-48 disposal predates modern ACM-handling regulation; any breakup produced no located hazmat record. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
