    Limitations
NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation keyed to a veterans'-association history (Turner Publishing, 1997), not a primary registry - it generally tracks NVR/DANFS conventions but is not itself official. The stricken date and the Maritime Commission transfer date are explicitly 'unknown' in the source. No asbestos or material content. Battle-star and awards display is the extract's presentation, not verified here against the Navy awards database (awards.navy.mil unreachable this session).

Brown Shipbuilding production table, hull 113 row; yard-history narrative
    Finding type
    vessel_history
    Finding
The Brown Shipbuilding production table lists LSM 8 as yard hull 113: laid down 14-Mar-44, launched 24-Apr-44, completed/delivered 26-May-44 - matching NavSource exactly - and records disposition 'Sold to Georgia Marine Salvage 1947, converted to barge Steven D, later Natcon 1 (ON 261812).' Yard history: Brown Shipbuilding was built in 1941 by George and Herman Brown at the junction of Green's Bayou and the Houston Ship Channel with $9M from the Navy; it built 254 LSMs among 359 total vessels in four years; leased to Todd Shipyards in 1949.

Secondary compiled reference (Colton's shipbuilding lists) - authoritative for yard-production data but not an official registry; the barge names Steven D and Natcon 1 (Official Number 261812) come from this source and are not cross-verified here against Coast Guard merchant-vessel documentation. Finding type
    vessel_history
    Finding
The official DANFS history of USS Clay (APA-39) records that at Lingayen Gulf, after unloading her troopers, Clay 'also embarked additional soldiers as well as 41 Army casualties transferred from LSM-8' before departing with TU 78.12.4 for Guadalcanal on 27 January 1945. This is an official-source confirmation that LSM-8 was present and operating in the Lingayen Gulf landings area during the Luzon operation, recovering casualties from the beachhead.

    Finding
The National Archives holds the wartime action report of Commander, LSM Group Seven for the Lingayen Gulf assault landings of 9-22 January 1945 and that group's June-August 1945 war diaries. The NHHC Pacific Fleet roster places LSM-8 in LSM Group Seven / Division Thirteen, so these are the records of this hull's own wartime formation for the operation she is documented to have taken part in.

    Finding
An LSM-1-class landing ship built at Brown Shipbuilding in spring 1944 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era. Because she was diesel-powered (direct-drive opposed-piston diesels, no boilers or turbines), the boiler/turbine steam-lagging pathway does not apply; era-standard applications aboard a diesel vessel of this type and period were thermal insulation, machinery and diesel-exhaust lagging, gaskets, valve packing, electrical insulation, and brake linings on deck machinery (winches, windlass), plus insulation felts in accommodation and galley spaces.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or verified litigation naming USS LSM-8 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CourtListener opinion search for 'LSM-8' returned a single name collision (Rios Sanchez v. Narvaez Calderon, P.R. Sup. Ct. 2004 - 'LSM' = Puerto Rico child-support statute), and 'USS LSM-8' returned zero opinions; RECAP docket searches returned 19 full-text string matches for 'LSM-8' in unrelated cases (criminal, bankruptcy, and product-liability dockets - none names the vessel) and zero for 'USS LSM-8'. A live-web asbestos/litigation sweep returned only unrelated noise (LSM8 gene, laboratory manuals); no law-firm or marketing page specific to this hull was located.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1944 diesel landing ship is era-consistent with retained asbestos materials. CourtListener opinion and RECAP docket indexes were both searched this session; PACER itself was not searched, and a complaint naming the hull could exist outside CourtListener coverage. The 182-image muster roll (NAID 126512019), COM LSM GR 7 action reports, and RG 24 deck logs are open archival leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
