- During World War II USS LSM-82 was assigned to the Asiatic-Pacific Theater with LSM Flotilla Six (CDR A. R. Quinn USN), LSM Group Eighteen (LCDR J. M. Fabre USNR), LSM Division Thirty-Five; she participated in the Okinawa Gunto operation - assault and occupation of Okinawa Gunto, 2 April to 17 June 1945 - earning one battle star. Contributor-captioned photographs place her landing men and tanks of the 713th Flame Thrower Tank Battalion during the invasion of Okinawa, beached at Okinawa with USS LSM-28 and other LSMs in 1945, at Cebu, P.I., 30 August 1945 among a group of LSMs (photographed from USS LSM-186), and in China in 1945. Following WWII she was assigned to occupation service in the Far East from 11 September to 30 November 1945.

Harris, scrapped 1961.' Yard context: Brown Shipbuilding was the emergency yard built in 1941 by George and Herman Brown at Green's Bayou on the Houston Ship Channel with $9mm of Navy funding; it produced 359 vessels in four years including 254 LSMs. uboat.net independently lists this hull: ordered 15 September 1943, built by Brown Shipbuilding Co. (Houston), laid down 14 Aug 1944, launched 7 Sep 1944, commissioned 7 Oct 1944, decommissioned 15 March 1946, sold 29 December (1947).

Cataloged on the same microfilm roll is the companion report of sister LSM-279 (NAID 101763108). A separate NARA search of the digitized 'Logbooks of U.S. Navy Ships and Stations' series (NAID 594258) for 'LSM-82' returned no logbook file unit titled for this hull (only in-text mentions inside other ships' logs); the digitized RG 24 muster-roll series (NAID 594996) likewise produced no file unit titled for LSM-82.

- POST-NAVY IDENTITY: Lloyd's Register of Shipping 1959-60 (combined register, digitized on Internet Archive) carries 'ALFRED J. Co. Houston,' converted 1949 ('conv 49'), dimensions 203'6" x 34'1", one deck, powered by '2 Oil Engines 2SA each 10Cy. 215 x 255 mm' built by 'Fairbanks, Morse & Co.' Chicago, in 'service in River St. Lawrence to Port Menier, Anticosti Island.' Builder, build year, length, and engine maker/model family all match the Navy LSM-82 (203'6" hull; Fairbanks Morse 38D8-1/8 ten-cylinder opposed-piston diesels), confirming the post-Navy identity reported by shipbuildinghistory's yard table.

The 1949 machinery/engine/freeboard/hull-particulars surveys document the post-Navy conversion of this hull; the 26 April 1961 total-loss report anchors the 'scrapped 1961' disposition - these are the strongest material-condition leads for this hull's post-Navy state, and a conversion-era survey file could contain insulation/material detail worth a manual pull.

- Finding
- Class documentation establishes the machinery fit relevant to era-standard asbestos applications: LSM Class Manual ch. 30 (Main Propelling Machinery) confirms the Fairbanks Morse 38D8-1/8 opposed-piston diesel - 'used on the following Vessels: Nos. 1-125...' - covers hull 82, one muffler per engine; ch. 31-9 documents an auxiliary oil-fired fire-tube steam boiler designed for about 150 psi (supplying ~55 psi working steam for the distilling plant); ch. 31 documents refrigeration plants in the machinery space; ch. 32 covers pumps, tanks, and piping systems. Aboard a 1944-built naval vessel the asbestos-relevant loci are the auxiliary boiler and its steam lines, exhaust/muffler lagging, gaskets, valve packing, and electrical insulation - era-standard applications, none documented as asbestos aboard this specific hull.

OCR of ch. 30 and ch. 31-9 this session verified the machinery claims; the machinery chapters contain no explicit asbestos or insulation-material references (it is an operator's manual, not a construction spec). The review covered Navy efforts to protect workers at the Long Beach and Norfolk Naval Shipyards, asbestos use in Navy ships, removal costs, and compensation programs; Navy policy (1975) was to remove/replace only damaged insulation or insulation that had to be removed for repairs, modified in 1979 to include selective replacement in high-maintenance areas.

- CORRECTIONS surfaced by cross-check: (a) Division assignment - NavSource's Turner extract places LSM-82 in 'LSM Division Thirty-Five,' while the official NHHC 1 May 1945 fleet-organization document lists LSM 82 under LSM Division 36 (both agree on Flotilla Six / Group 18); the official document is carried for the 1 May 1945 snapshot and the discrepancy logged. (b) Commanding-officer spelling - NavSource 'LT. Frederic S. Dean, Jr., USNR' vs NHHC 'Lt. F. S. Deans, Jr. (USNR)' - same officer, unresolved terminal-'s' variant. (c) Post-Navy form - shipbuildinghistory's 'converted to barge Alfred J. Harris' vs Lloyd's Register's classed self-propelled 'Coarse Freight Carrier' retaining Fairbanks Morse engines ('conv 49'); the hull evidently retained propulsion and operated as a small motorship freight carrier.
