NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry; its history extract is credited to the Turner Publishing LSM-LSMR volume, a veteran-compiled unit history, not DANFS. No DANFS entry exists for this numbered landing ship (NHHC DANFS index carries named ships; verified no LSM-92 entry 2026-10-02). Contains no asbestos or material content. 'Fate unknown' is the source's own final-disposition statement.

A third NavSource caption (photo 101409207) describing LSM-92 'beached at Okinawa, February 1945' while citing the COMTASKFOR 51 Iwo Jima report is internally inconsistent (Okinawa operations began April 1945) - flagged in gaps, not asserted here. The digitized NARA war-diaries series holds this hull's parent command's operation report: Commander LSM Group Thirteen's report of operations in the invasion of Iwo Jima covering 19 February - 14 March 1945 - the period NavSource records LSM-92 operating under LSM Group Thirteen / LSM Division Twenty-Five at Iwo Jima. This is the primary-source path for the ship's day-by-day beaching, unloading, and any battle-damage record during her only campaign.

LSM Group Thirteen ships' crews at Iwo Jima (Feb-Mar 1945)
    Limitations
Archival lead only: the file unit is the group commander's report, not LSM-92's own record - no separate LSM-92 war diary was located in the series (exact-phrase search returned only command-level units; smaller LSMs commonly filed through their group/flotilla commanders). Whether the report names LSM-92 specifically is unverified - page-level contents not individually inspected. Contains no asbestos subject matter as titled.

    asbestos_application
    Finding
A diesel-powered amphibious auxiliary built in September-October 1944 sits squarely inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era. Era-standard asbestos applications aboard a vessel of this type and period were diesel exhaust lagging, thermal and machinery insulation, pipe and valve gaskets, valve packing, electrical insulation, accommodation-space finishes, and winch/windlass brake linings. With no boilers or steam plant aboard, the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply; the exposure pathways are the diesel machinery spaces, engineering gaskets and packing, and general shipboard insulation finishes.

The builder is documented as a wartime Navy production yard: the Brown brothers formed Brown Shipbuilding Company on the Houston Ship Channel in 1942; it built 359 ships during World War II, employed 25,000 people, and was awarded the Army-Navy 'E' and a presidential citation. The Handbook's Shipbuilding entry records $100 million in Navy escort-vessel contracts to Brown Shipbuilding and Todd-Galveston, with $200 million in supplemental contracts added August 1942.

    Finding
NARA maintains a dedicated research guide for asbestos aboard U.S. naval vessels 1941-1961, confirming this is an established archival research topic. The guide identifies the primary record path: RG 19 (Records of the Bureau of Ships) general, confidential, and secret correspondence 1940-1961, filed by Navy Filing Manual codes in which individual ships are filed by hull designation (for this hull, 'LSM-92', with class-level correspondence under 'LSM-1 Class' and type-level under 'LSM'), and shipyard correspondence under QM/<contractor name> - i.e., QM/Brown Shipbuilding. The relevant digitized/un-digitized entries include RG 19 Entries P 29 and A1 1266-A through -P (1940-45 general correspondence) covering this hull's build period.

No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or litigation naming USS LSM-92 was found in the public sources searched. CourtListener (authenticated, 2026-10-02): 'LSM-92' opinions = 0 results; 'USS LSM-92' opinions = 0 and RECAP dockets = 0; 'LSM-92' RECAP dockets = 2 hits, both name collisions, not vessel cases - Guertin v. Hennepin County (D. Minn., 42:1983 civil rights, 2024) and In re W.R. Grace & Co. (Bankr. D. Del. 01-01139, 'LSM-92' appearing inside a certificate-of-service document, not as a vessel allegation). 'Brown Shipbuilding' opinions = 12 hits, all 1940s-50s wartime labor/compensation litigation (FLSA suits e.g. Miller v. Brown Shipbuilding Co., 71 F. Supp. 672 (S.D. Tex. 1947), aff'd-related appeal 165 F.2d 956 (5th Cir. 1948); workmen's compensation appeals) - no asbestos case. 'Brown Shipbuilding' + asbestos opinions = 0. Secondary web sweeps surfaced no qualifying case; the only 'asbestos aboard' material is law-firm marketing listicle content (asbestos-ships.com covers sister hulls such as LSM-427) asserting asbestos without primary sourcing - excluded by source policy.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1944 Navy auxiliary built inside the documented asbestos era would be expected to carry era-standard materials. The hull was sold out of service in 1947, before asbestos litigation emerged, consistent with the empty docket. RG 19 BuShips correspondence (hull code LSM-92), RG 24 deck logs, and the 1947 sale/disposal file are undigitized leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
