- Finding
- Hull-named SECRET action report (letter serial 001, dated 6 May 1945, signed LT Neal B. Hadsell USNR), read directly from digitized scans. At 1915 on 4 May 1945 six ships on Radar Picket Station 10 patrolling about five miles west of Kume Shima - USS Cowell (DD), USS Gwin (DM), LSM(R)-192, LCS(L)-54, LCS(L)-55, LCS(L)-110 - were attacked by five enemy aircraft; all five were downed. One plane (identified by gun crews as an 'Oscar') made a suicide run at LSM(R)-192 dead ahead at ~40 ft, passed over the bow, and struck the extreme port rocket launchers (banks P, Q, R, forward of the 5"/38 director) with its port wing before crashing astern. Damage was minor: three rocket launchers replaced, bent 20mm gun tub, ~1-ft deck hole, damaged Mk 14 sight, lost lifelines/stanchions. Sole casualty: F1c William F. Histed (lacerated fingers, broken finger bone).

- Finding
- NHHC officially states that DANFS parameters covered only commissioned Navy ships with assigned names: 'Ships with only a designation, such as LSM, were not included in the DANFS series... The LSM and LSM(R) histories were not included in the DANFS for the above reasons.' The Ship's History Office instead scanned a compiled history of these ships by Capt. James B. Birindelli, SC, USNR (Ret.); because the scan was not word-searchable it could not be posted under Section 508 and was distributed only as CD-ROM SH-0068 (orderable from the Ships History Branch, Naval Historical Center, Washington Navy Yard).

- Digitized war diaries of this hull's documented parent commands exist in the catalog: LSM(R) Group Twenty-Seven (her flagship assignment per NavSource) for Feb, Apr, and Jun 1945, and LSM Flotilla Nine for Apr 1945 - the unit chain under which her action reports were routed (via Commander LSM(R) Group TWENTY SEVEN). These likely contain day-level positions and operations for the period covering Kerama Retto, the picket stations, and the May fire-support detachment.

- No steam plant aboard - the asbestos-relevant systems are the era-standard diesel landing-craft applications: machinery-space thermal insulation, exhaust lagging, gaskets, valve packing, electrical insulation, deck coverings, winch brake linings. The builder yard is a documented asbestos-using naval shipyard: the Atlas yard dataset's Charleston Naval Shipyard record carries verified entries (2014 Whalen and 2018 Twidwell verdicts; 1988 OSHA asbestos-standard citations) and lists asbestos products used in ship construction and repair, including spray-on insulation for ship interiors and electrical insulation throughout vessels.

CourtListener returned only name collisions - opinion index: 'LSM(R)-192' (128 hits; inspected results are LSM General Construction, 'In re LSM', docket-fragment and unrelated-tort collisions), 'LSMR-192' (1 hit, industrial patent case), 'LSM-192' (collision results); docket index: 'LSM(R)-192' (3,443 hits dominated by LSM-named LLCs and unrelated filings - inspected results all collisions). The Naval Vessel Register does not cover this hull - NVR states ships disposed of prior to 1987 are not included, and this hull was sold in 1948. No DANFS entry exists by official policy (see ev-05).

- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - 1944 naval construction at a documented asbestos yard makes era materials plausible. CourtListener coverage is collision-only rather than exhaustive: 3,443 docket hits and 128 opinion hits were reviewed at the top results pages, and a hull could still sit deeper in the collision noise. The two hull-named NARA action reports contain no materials information; the Birindelli compiled history (CD SH-0068) and undigitized deck logs are unchecked sources that could hold more.
