Burns; and commissioned on 25 April 1945.' Spec block: 'LSMR-404: dp. 1,084 (f.); l. 203'6"; b. 34'6"; dr. 6'8"; s. 12.6 k.; cpl. 138; a. 10 rkt. ln., 1 5", 4 40mm., 8 20mm.; cl. LSMR-401.' Three Korean War deployments with LSMR squadron mates LSMR-401 and -403: Inchon (Operation Chromite) rocket barrages at Wolmi Do and the tidal basin/Blue Beach on 15 September 1950; Wonsan approach 19 October 1950; Hungnam evacuation covering fire December 1950 (first barrage 21 December, evacuation concluded 24 December); Inchon/Taechon evacuation support January 1951; Kansong/Kosong operations 29-31 January 1951; second deployment from October 1951 with eight months of harbor-siege fire support at Wonsan, Songjin, Chinnampo, Inchon, and Taeju through spring-summer 1952; third deployment June 1953 arriving Yokosuka 29 July 1953 after the armistice; armistice patrols and WestPac port calls; last Yokosuka departure 10 March 1954. 'LSMR-404 was placed in commission, in reserve, on 1 June 1954. After completing inactivation overhaul at the Long Beach Naval Shipyard, the warship was moved to Puget Sound where she was decommissioned on 10 November 1954. Berthed with the Columbia River Group, Pacific Reserve Fleet, she was named Black Warrior River on 1 October 1955. She carried that name exactly three years for, on 1 October 1958, it was struck from the Navy list preparatory to disposal.' 'Black Warrior River earned seven battle stars during the Korean conflict as LSMR-404.' (DANFS entry by Raymond A. Mann, 6 February 2006.)

- Finding
- A diesel-powered amphibious rocket ship built January-April 1945 at the Charleston Navy Yard sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era; era-standard applications aboard a diesel landing ship of this period were thermal insulation in machinery and accommodation spaces, diesel-exhaust lagging, gaskets at flanges and machinery joints, valve packing, and electrical insulation - within a small, enclosed 203-foot hull. As a diesel ship she carried no steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply.

- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or docketed case naming USS LSM(R)-404 / USS Black Warrior River (LSMR-404) was found in the public sources searched. CourtListener was searched under authentication on 2026-09-30: hull-designation queries ('LSMR-404', 'LSM(R)-404', 'LFR-404') returned zero opinions; '"Black Warrior River" asbestos' returned zero; the bare phrase 'Black Warrior River' returned 64 opinion hits and 97 docket hits, and every hit inspected is a name collision - Alabama-river environmental litigation (Black Warrior Riverkeeper v. Drummond, v. U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, v. Warrior Met Coal, et al.), river-adjacent property disputes, and geographic references - none involving the vessel.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - the ship was built inside the Navy's asbestos era and era-consistent material is a reasonable inference. Deck logs (NARA RG 24), Charleston Navy Yard work packages, the 1954 Long Beach inactivation-overhaul package, and the 1959 disposal file are undigitized leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.

- Finding
- CORRECTION: secondary indexes carry 'LFR-404' for this hull - NavSource's page header ('USS Black Warrior River (LFR-404)') and the Wikipedia class list. The Inshore Fire Support Ship (LFR) reclassification of 1 January 1969 applied to the surviving river-named LSMR hulls still on the Naval Register; this hull had been struck 1 October 1958 and sold in 1959 - a decade earlier - so LFR-404 could never have applied to a Navy-held vessel. The label is a paper-series propagation across the LSMR->LFR hull-number block, not a service designation of this ship.

- Corrects a circulating designation anachronism, not a material or asbestos claim. The 1 January 1969 LFR reclassification itself is well documented for extant hulls (e.g., LFR-401); only its application to this already-disposed hull is the error. No asbestos content.
