[2]NavSource Online: Amphibious Photo Archive, USS Charles River (LSMR-408), including U.S. Navy-photo captions and vessel history/specification block [other_primary]

- Construction/disposition and specifications blocks; U.S. Navy-photo captions
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- Ship-specific history identifies this hull as LSM(R)-401-class landing ship medium (rocket), laid down 22 January 1945 at Charleston Navy Yard, launched 12 February 1945, and commissioned USS LSM(R)-408 on 9 May 1945. It was decommissioned at San Diego on 16 January 1948, laid up in the Pacific Reserve Fleet, named USS Charles River (LSMR-408) on 1 October 1955, struck from the Naval Register in 1958, and sold in 1960 to Tacoma Tug & Barge Co. of Tacoma, Washington, which converted it to a barge. The page gives a complement of 5 officers and 133 enlisted and identifies two General Motors 16-287A diesel engines, diesel-driven generators, twin screws, and 2,800 shp.

- Charleston Navy Yard construction trades; USS LSM(R)-408 crew, 1945-1948
- Limitations
- The live page is ship-specific and includes U.S. Navy-photo captions, but says its DANFS history extract is from a 1997 commercial unit-history compilation. It documents identity, milestones, disposition, and machinery, not asbestos content, exposure, or causation.

[3]U.S. General Accounting Office, Navy Efforts To Protect Workers From Asbestos Exposure, HRD-80-2 (1979), Navy-wide program context; propulsion and hull details from NavSource ship-specific page [gao]
- Locator
- GAO product page (direct retrieval HTTP 403); NavSource specifications block
- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- Era/class context only: this was a 1945 diesel-propelled LSM(R)-401-class landing ship medium (rocket). General Navy asbestos-program documentation may inform archival prioritization, but no cited source identifies asbestos products installed aboard USS LSM(R)-408 / USS Charles River and the ship-specific specifications document no steam boiler or turbine system.

- Population
- World War II Navy shipbuilding and Navy asbestos-program context; not a USS LSM(R)-408 survey
- Limitations
- This is program/era context and a propulsion-type distinction, not a finding that asbestos was aboard this hull. It does not establish product identity, quantity, location, condition, removal, remaining material, exposure, or causation. The official GAO page blocked direct retrieval (HTTP 403), so it is retained as a context citation and archival lead only.

[4]Negative-finding synthesis from the ship-specific NavSource record, official GAO program context, NAVSEA inactive-ship history search result, NARA/NHHC searches, and the source-policy web sweep [other_primary]
- Locator
- Search ledger rows sl-01 through sl-05; no qualifying ship-specific asbestos source located
- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- No ship-specific asbestos documentation was located in the authoritative-source sweep: no hull survey, asbestos abatement record, hazmat disclosure, or official preserved-hull condition record for USS LSM(R)-408 / USS Charles River was found. The vessel was sold and converted to a barge in 1960, and no later-condition record was located.

- 1945-2026
- Limitations
- A documentation gap is not evidence that asbestos was absent. This row does not establish the absence of asbestos aboard the ship and does not resolve litigation because CourtListener opinion and docket requests were blocked by the fleet-wide pacing limiter before a result body was returned.

[5]CourtListener API v4, authenticated through /Users/charlesfletcher/devin-prompts/cl-auth-search.py [court_record]
- Locator
- Authenticated helper stderr: 'COURTLISTENER PACING: the fleet-wide request budget is momentarily spent'; exit code 2; no response body
- Finding type
- litigation_documented
- Finding
- No CourtListener litigation classification could be completed in this session. Authenticated helper requests for the exact ship name USS LSM(R)-408 and exact hull number LSMR-408 were attempted; the fleet-wide limiter returned its stand-down response before either search result body was returned. Accordingly, the record is not classified as no-result and no asbestos-litigation hit is asserted.

- Limitations
- These are blocked searches, not negative litigation results. Exact-name and exact-hull docket searches, plus alias searches, must be rerun through the helper when fleet capacity returns. No pleading, discovery record, trial finding, or judgment is being inferred from the blocked requests.
