- NavSource records this hull as 'LSM(R) 501 Class' laid down 31 March 1945 at Brown Ship Building Co, Houston, TX; launched 28 April 1945; commissioned USS LSM(R)-506 20 May 1945, LT. Howard E. Macklin USN), LSM(R) Group Forty-Three, LSM(R) Division One Hundred Five; decommissioned 20 May 1946 at Astoria, OR; laid up in the Pacific Reserve Fleet, Columbia River Group; named USS Green River (LSM(R)-506) 1 October 1955; struck from the Naval Register 1 October 1958; sold in 1959 to Tidewater Barge Lines Inc., Vancouver, WA, converted to a barge, Official Number 290557, renamed #545, used to haul wheat on the Columbia and Snake Rivers; current disposition (page updated 16 April 2004) 'in use as a Tie-off barge (Spud Barge).' Awards listed: American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal - no battle stars. Specifications: 758 t. light / 993 t. attack / 1,175 t. fully loaded; 206'3" x 34'6"; 13 kts; 6 officers + 137 enlisted; 1 x 5"/38, 2 twin 40mm, 4 twin 20mm, 10 twin 5" SS rocket launchers, 4 x 4.2" mortars; 2 x GM 16-278A diesels, 1,440 BHP each, twin screws 2,800 shp. - Limitations
- NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - its milestone dates generally track DANFS but the 20 May 1945 commissioning date conflicts with DANFS and uboat.net (19 June 1945); the correction is carried in ev-04. Contains no asbestos content. The 2002 photo documentation establishes the hull was extant as a commercial barge as of that date - it does not establish present-day (2026) status or the material condition of the hull.

- uboat.net records USS LSM(R) 506 as a medium landing ship (rocket) of the LSM(R) 401 class, US Navy, pennant LSM(R) 506: built by Brown Shipbuilding Co. (Houston, Texas); ordered 30 August 1944; laid down 31 March 1945; launched 28 April 1945; commissioned 19 June 1945; end service 20 May 1946; history line: 'Decommissioned on 20 May 1946. Stricken on 1 October 1958. Sold in 1959.' The uboat.net class index (class/611) groups all 48 hulls - LSM(R)-401 through -412 and LSM(R)-501 through -536 - as the LSM(R) 401 class.

- Finding
- CORRECTION: NavSource (ev-02) and NavalCoverMuseum carry a commissioning date of 20 May 1945 for this hull. DANFS (ev-01), uboat.net (ev-03), and the Utah History Encyclopedia ('Commissioned on 19 June 1945 she was decommissioned after eleven months service') all carry 19 June 1945. The eleven-months-service figure is consistent only with 19 June 1945 to 20 May 1946. NavSource's own photo caption 'USS LSM(R)-506 under way, 19 June 1945' is likewise consistent with the DANFS date. The DANFS date, 19 June 1945, is carried; the 20 May 1945 variant appears to be a propagation error between NavSource and NavalCoverMuseum (which mirror each other's designation data).

- Limitations
- Corrects a date conflict among secondary sources against the primary DANFS text; the 20 May 1945 variant remains undocumented and its origin is unexplained (possible confusion with the symmetric decommissioning date 20 May 1946). NavalCoverMuseum holds no postmarks or covers for LSM(R)-506, so no postal evidence resolves the question. Not a material claim.

- Finding
- GAO reviewed the Navy's efforts to protect workers from asbestos exposure at Long Beach and Norfolk Naval Shipyards, covering the use of asbestos in Navy ships, the cost of removing asbestos from Navy ships, and compensation programs. GAO documented that the Navy's 1975 policy was to remove and replace with nonasbestos materials only insulation that was damaged or had to be removed for repairs, modified in 1979 to selectively replace asbestos insulation in high-maintenance areas - establishing that asbestos ship insulation was a Navy-wide program reality spanning this hull's 1945 construction and 1945-46 service era.

CAVEAT on litigation: CourtListener authenticated searches returned no indexed results for "LSMR-506" (opinions), "LSM(R)-506" (opinions and dockets), and "USS Green River" (opinions and dockets); only the "LSMR-506" docket query remained paced out by the shared fleet request budget after multiple spaced retries and is logged as blocked in search_ledger - the litigation sweep is substantially complete but not exhaustive.

- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard. No primary construction specification, material list, or weight-control report for this hull was reviewed; NARA RG 181 (8th Naval District, Fort Worth) subject files and RG 24 deck logs are undigitized leads. The hull's survival as a commercial barge means any present-day material-condition question is a civilian survey matter; no such survey was located.
