NHHC DANFS entry (as 'Lamoille River', LSMR-512, class statline 'cl. LSMR-401'): a river in northern Vermont which empties into Lake Champlain. Laid down as LSMR-512 by Brown Shipbuilding Co., Houston, Tex., 7 April 1945; launched 5 May 1945; commissioned 5 July 1945, Lt. R. W. Langworthy in command. After shakedown in Chesapeake Bay she sailed through the St. Lawrence River for Navy Day celebrations at Bay City, Mich., then returned for exercises off the Virginia Capes. From 1946 to 1955 she performed tactical exercises off the east coast, squadron maneuvers in the Caribbean, and cold-weather operations in the North Atlantic off Labrador; during the Korean conflict she conducted intensive exercises along the Atlantic coast and in the Caribbean training officers and enlisted men for Asian service. Named Lamoille River 1 October 1955; decommissioned at Orange, Tex., 5 December 1955; joined the Atlantic Reserve Fleet; berthed at Norfolk at the time of writing.

    Limitations
Authoritative Navy history but written while the hull was still in reserve - the narrative ends at 1955 decommissioning and does not cover the 1969 LFR reclassification, 1973 striking, or 1974 sale. DANFS statline groups the hull under 'cl. LSMR-401' while NavSource and modern literature designate the Brown-built 501-536 series as the LSM(R)-501 class (see gaps). DANFS records only Atlantic/Great Lakes operations; NavSource's WWII Pacific assignment and Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal display are not corroborated here. No asbestos content.

    Limitations
NavSource is a volunteer secondary archive; its timeline generally tracks NVR/DANFS but is not a primary registry. The Asiatic-Pacific assignment and APCM display are not corroborated by the DANFS narrative (which describes only Atlantic/Great Lakes operations) - whether the hull physically deployed to the Pacific is unresolved (see gaps). A photo caption placing the ship 'under way off San Diego, CA., June 1964' conflicts with her December 1955 decommissioning into the Atlantic Reserve Fleet and is likely misdated or misattributed. Post-1974 commercial details (Uhod layup, scrapping window) are secondary and unverified against registry sources. No asbestos content.

Propulsion: two General Motors 16-278A non-reversing diesels with airflex clutch, 1,440 BHP each at 720 rpm, direct drive, twin screws, 2,800 shp; ship's service generators four diesel-drive 100 kW 450V AC and two diesel-drive 20 kW 120V DC. Limitations
The specification block identifies a diesel propulsion plant and does not state that any listed system contained asbestos. No boiler or steam-turbine plant is documented for this hull, so the boiler/turbine-lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply; asbestos-relevant systems are diesel-era inference (exhaust lagging, gaskets, packing, electrical, deck covering, fireproofing). Complement 143 here vs. DANFS statline 147 - discrepancy noted in gaps. The figures do not establish material composition, quantity, condition, or exposure.

    Finding
USNI Naval History (August 1994, A. D. Baker III) class context: 60 LSMs were converted/completed as LSM(R) rocket ships; LSM(R)-401 to -412 and the similar LSM(R)-501 to -536 (which had a forecastle and were about three feet longer) carried ten twin-tube, trainable, automatically reloadable Mk 102 launchers, four 4.2-inch mortars, two twin director-controlled 40mm and four twin 20mm mounts. Brown Shipbuilding Company of Houston built most of the LSM program ships. Three of the dozen LSMRs retyped LFR were reactivated for Vietnam service; LSMR-512/LFR-512 was not among them - she decommissioned into reserve in 1955 and never recommissioned. Lead ship LSM(R)-501 served as Elk River (IX-501), a barracks barge at San Diego.

    Finding
GAO HRD-80-2 documents the Navy asbestos era spanning this hull's entire construction and service life. Per the report's Navy attachment: 'thermal insulation for machinery, equipment and piping systems has been the major application of asbestos' aboard Navy ships, and 'all ships presently in service contain some quantity of asbestos' - including piping-system gaskets and packing, deck floor tiling, electrical cabling and resistors, galley ranges, and equipment brakes and clutches ('nearly impossible to build a Navy ship free of the mineral'). Thermal-insulation product specifications were changed to asbestos-free only in 1973, and ships already under construction continued to be delivered with asbestos insulation as late as May 1978. This hull was built in 1945 and decommissioned in 1955 - entirely within the documented asbestos-use era.

Program-level documentation: establishes Navy-wide shipboard asbestos use and the 1973 specification change, not anything specific to this hull. GAO fieldwork covered Long Beach and Norfolk Naval Shipyards; Lamoille River was berthed in the Atlantic Reserve Fleet Norfolk Group 1955-1973, but the report does not address reserve-fleet hulls. Does not establish materials aboard this hull, quantity, condition, exposure, or causation.

Era inference for this hull type: a diesel-powered LSM(R)-501-class amphibious ship built at Brown Shipbuilding, Houston, in 1945. For a hull of this type and era, possible asbestos-relevant applications include diesel engine exhaust and machinery insulation, piping-system gaskets and packing, electrical insulation and cabling, deck coverings, galley equipment, and fireproofing/joiner materials - with magazines and rocket-assembly spaces aboard the type adding thermal-insulation applications documented for the class layout. Built during the period when the Navy's standard specifications still called for asbestos-containing thermal insulation and sheet/panel materials.

The name query '"Lamoille River" OR "Lamiolle River"' returned 26 opinions, but every sampled hit (20 of 20 reviewed) is a name collision concerning the Lamoille River or Lamoille County, Vermont - hydroelectric water-quality cases (Morrisville Hydroelectric Project line), Act 250 land-use appeals, the St. Johnsbury & Lamoille County Railroad, insurance, and criminal matters. Name-spelling correction: the canonical name under authoritative sources is 'Lamoille River' (the river in northern Vermont emptying into Lake Champlain, per DANFS). A misspelling 'Lamiolle River' circulates in secondary indexes (including the PRIMARY registry key that triggered this batch). DANFS, NavSource, and USNI all use 'Lamoille'. The misspelling is retained in aliases so automated name-matching still resolves this hull.
