- DANFS Vol. VI, p. 240, 'St. Johns River' entry — namesake paragraph, specification line, and service paragraph
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- DANFS documents that LSMR-526 was originally authorized as LSM-526, reclassified LSMR-526 on 21 April 1945, laid down 19 May 1945 by Brown Shipbuilding Co. Inc., Houston, Texas, launched 16 June, and commissioned 22 August 1945. Reporting for shakedown 29 August, she conducted Atlantic-coast training and in-port periods until reporting to the Reserve Fleet at Green Cove Springs in April 1946; she decommissioned 28 May 1946. She was named St. Johns River on 1 October 1955, struck from the Navy List on 1 October 1958, and sold on 4 August to Fleet Storage Corp. The DANFS specification line gives 206 feet 3 inches length, 34 feet 6 inches beam, 12.6 knots, complement 138, and LSMR-501 class.

- Limitations
- Authoritative ship-specific history, but it contains no asbestos, insulation-material, exposure, or causation finding. The live NHHC URL was verified dead (404); this is a live transcription of the printed DANFS entry, not a claim that the archived NHHC page is live. DANFS does not state the sale year or the vessel's subsequent fate.

- Locator
- NavSource 10/06/06526.htm history, awards, and LSM(R) Specifications blocks
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- NavSource's live hull page records the same construction and Navy milestones, identifies Lt. John R. Lewis, USNR as commanding officer at commissioning, gives the final disposition as sale on 4 August 1959 to Fleet Storage Corp. with fate unknown, and lists American Campaign Medal and World War II Victory Medal. Its LSM(R)-501 specification block gives 758 tons light, 993 tons attack, 1,175 tons full; 206 feet 3 inches length; 34 feet 6 inches beam; 13 knots; 6 officers and 137 enlisted; two General Motors 16-278A direct-drive diesel engines, 1,440 BHP each, twin screws, 2,800 shp; and four diesel-drive 100 kW AC plus two diesel-drive 20 kW DC generators.

- Limitations
- NavSource is a volunteer archival compilation, not an official registry. It corroborates the history but does not establish asbestos-containing material, exposure, causation, or current hull condition. Its 143-person arithmetic conflicts with DANFS complement 138; both are retained as a discrepancy. Page was verified live on navsource.net, not the dead navsource.org domain.

- Locator
- uboat.net ship/13178.html data table and history field
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- The live uboat.net entry lists Brown Shipbuilding, Houston as builder; order date 30 August 1944; laid down 19 May 1945; launched 16 June 1945; commissioned 22 August 1945; end service 28 May 1946; struck 1 October 1958; and sold 4 August 1959. It files the type as LSM(R) 401 class.

- Ship's company (1945-46)
- Limitations
- Specialist secondary database used only to corroborate the DANFS/NavSource milestone sequence and to identify its umbrella class convention. It contains no asbestos or material documentation. Its LSM(R)-401 label differs from the LSM(R)-501 label in DANFS and NavSource; this is carried as a class-labeling discrepancy, not treated as a different hull.

[5]NavSource Online: USS St. Johns River (LSMR-526) photo captions and transcribed January/March 1946 USS LSM(R)-524 deck-log excerpts [other_primary]
- Locator
- NavSource 10/06/06526.htm captions for images 100652303 and 100651902; quoted LSM(R)-524 January and March 1946 deck-log excerpts
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- NavSource photo captions identify LSM(R)-526 in a six-ship nest at Green Cove Springs in January 1946 and in the seventeen-ship 'Operation Zipper' decommissioning nest there in March 1946. The page transcribes contemporaneous LSM(R)-524 deck-log entries placing that sister at Berth Oak 31, St. Johns River, and listing an auxiliary boiler among machinery operating in January 1946; the March entry lists LSM(R)-526 among the ships nested to LSM(R)-524's port.

- Population
- Green Cove Springs inactivation personnel and LSM(R)-526 crew (January-March 1946); LSM(R)-524 crew for machinery entry
- Limitations
- The captions place this hull at the documented reserve/inactivation site. The machinery entry is a sister ship's log, not LSM(R)-526's log: it supports only class-level context that a same-class sister operated an auxiliary boiler. It does not prove this hull's boiler fit, insulation material, asbestos presence, quantity, individual exposure, or causation. Underlying RG 24 deck logs were not retrieved.

[6]U.S. GAO, HRD-80-2, Navy Efforts To Protect Workers From Asbestos Exposure (18 Oct. 1979) [gao]
- Locator
- GAO product page HRD-80-2 (automated access blocked); subject/title scope
- Finding type
- gov_survey
- Finding
- GAO's Navy asbestos-protection review provides Navy-wide context for asbestos ship insulation and removal policy during the relevant historical era. In conjunction with this hull's 1945 diesel main propulsion and sister-ship auxiliary-boiler context, it prioritizes thermal insulation, pipe covering/lagging, machinery or exhaust insulation, boiler insulation, gaskets, packing, electrical insulation, and fireproofing as research categories rather than documented materials aboard LSM(R)-526.

- 1975-1979 policy/review period; contextualized to 1945-46 hull era
- Population
- Navy shipyard workers and Navy ships generally
- Limitations
- Navy-wide program context only, not a hull-specific finding. The GAO product page returned HTTP 403 to automated retrieval on 2026-10-01; the report is retained as a blocked-source research lead. This row does not establish any listed material was installed aboard LSM(R)-526, its quantity, condition, exposure, causation, or legal eligibility.

- NavSource LSM Class Manual index: Sections II, chapters 30-39
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- A digitized period Navy LSM-family manual indexes main propelling machinery, auxiliary machinery, boilers, pumps/tanks/piping, ventilation, and other technical sections. It is a potential source for material specifications requiring page-image review or OCR.

- Limitations
- This manual was issued to base-design USS LSM-294, not this rocket variant, and the scanned index itself does not identify asbestos or establish content aboard LSM(R)-526. It is an archival lead only; no page-level material specification was located in this research pass.

- asbestos_application
- Finding
- No ship-specific asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, product inventory, or other primary asbestos record for LSM(R)-526/LSMR-526/St. Johns River was located in the public sources searched. Ship-specific asbestos documentation is unknown, not established absent. CourtListener is an explicit incomplete gap: authenticated exact-name and hull-number requests were sent only through the required v4 helper but remained held by the fleet pacing limiter within the available research window; no CourtListener no-result is claimed.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard. The CourtListener sweep was not completed and must not be read as a negative litigation result. No primary construction specification, material list, or hull deck log was reviewed. NARA RG 24 deck logs, Brown Shipbuilding construction records, and the 1959 sale/disposal documentation remain open leads.
