[2]Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships, 'Smyrna River' (LSMR-532), NHHC; direct NHHC page is currently 404, so this record cites the named official reference without a live URL. [nhhc_danfs]

- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- DANFS identifies Smyrna River (LSMR-532) as laid down 2 June 1945 by Brown Shipbuilding Co., Inc., Houston, Texas; launched 7 July; and commissioned 12 October 1945. Its specification block gives displacement 1,084, length 206 feet 3 inches, beam 34 feet 6 inches, draft 7 feet 2 inches, speed 12.6 knots, complement 138, one 5-inch gun, ten rocket launchers, four 40-mm guns, four 4.2-inch mortars, and class Elk River. DANFS says she sailed to Charleston via Galveston for shakedown at Little Creek; was ordered to Green Cove Springs for Atlantic Reserve Fleet lay-up on 8 January 1946, then to Charleston on the 13th, arrived 14 January and was directed back to Green Cove Springs; and was placed in reserve, out of commission, in March 1946. It says she was struck 29 August 1958, sold to the Federal Republic of Germany on 5 September as Otter (L-754), and that Otter was decommissioned and scrapped 15 December 1967.

- Population
- Brown Shipbuilding construction workforce (June-October 1945); U.S. Navy crew (1945-46); reserve-fleet personnel; German recipient navy and disposal workforce
- Limitations
- Ship-specific operational and disposition history, not asbestos documentation. The live NHHC URL returned HTTP 404 on 2026-10-01; no live or accessible Wayback capture was available in this session. DANFS contains an internal chronology anomaly: it says the ship sailed to Charleston on 9 October but gives commissioning as 12 October; the sequence is retained exactly rather than reconciled. It does not identify machinery, asbestos-containing material, product, quantity, worker exposure, or causation.

- NavSource 10/06/06532.htm, header timeline and transfer-ceremony captions
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- The live NavSource hull page is a lead to photographs, including 1945 Charleston images and the 5 September 1958 transfer-and-commissioning ceremony material for the Federal Republic of Germany's Second Landing Squadron. Its timeline gives 17 June 1946 for decommissioning, 1 October 1955 for naming Smyrna River, and transfer as Otter (L-754) on 5 September 1958.

- Limitations
- NavSource is a volunteer compilation and photo archive, not an official registry or primary asbestos source; it is retained solely as an archival lead and does not support asbestos, product, exposure, or causation claims. Its 17 June 1946 decommissioning date conflicts with DANFS's March 1946 reserve/out-of-commission statement and is not adopted as the canonical date.

[4]Research sweep documented in this record's search_ledger: NHHC DANFS, Naval Vessel Register, NARA catalog, NavSource archival lead, authenticated CourtListener (pending fleet pacing), and official-source web searches. [other_primary]

- Finding type
- litigation_documented
- Finding
- No qualifying public ship-specific asbestos survey, abatement record, hazmat disclosure, product identification, or adjudicated asbestos litigation naming USS LSM(R)-532 / USS Smyrna River (LSMR-532) was located in the completed non-CourtListener sources. The authenticated CourtListener sweep is incomplete: submitted exact hull-identifier and exact-name opinion requests were held by the fleet-wide pacing limiter before a response; it is an open search gap, not a negative CourtListener result.

- Limitations
- An absence of located public documentation does not establish absence of asbestos aboard, exposure, causation, legal eligibility, or the absence of undiscovered records. CourtListener docket searches and any result-bearing name/hull searches must be completed once the shared authenticated limiter permits it; NARA deck logs, builder records, and German transfer/disposal records remain archival leads.
