- Documented for this hull (DANFS verbatim): 'LST-1002 was laid down on 3 May 1944 at the Boston Navy Yard; launched on 8 June 1944; sponsored by Mrs. Mary E. Nelson; and commissioned on 25 June 1944, Lt. S. Edelson, USNR, in command. During World War II, LST-1002 was assigned to the Asiatic-Pacific theater and participated in the assault and occupation of Okinawa Gunto from April through June 1945. Following the war, she performed occupation duty in the Far East until mid-October 1945. The ship was decommissioned on 22 May 1946 and transferred to the State Department for disposition that same day. She was struck from the Navy list on 3 July 1946. LST-1002 earned one battle star for World War II service.'

- NavSource timeline for this hull: laid down 3 May 1944 at the Boston Navy Yard; launched 8 June 1944; commissioned 25 June 1944, LT. Sidney Edelson USNR in command. First assigned to the Europe-Africa-Middle East Theater (convoy HXM 30), then reassigned to the Asiatic-Pacific Theater - LST Flotilla Thirty-Five (CAPT. D. H. Johnston USN), LST Group One Hundred Four (CDR. D. Stubbs USN), LST Division Two Hundred Eight. Asiatic-Pacific campaign: Okinawa Gunto operation, 26 April to 30 June 1945. Occupation service in the Far East 2 September to 18 October 1945; the page notes China Service 'appears' to apply but 'is not documented.' Decommissioned and transferred to the State Department 22 May 1946; struck 3 July 1946; 'Sold by the State Department to the Republic of China'; 'Final Disposition, fate unknown'; one battle star. - NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - milestone dates track DANFS/NVR but the EAME convoy detail (HXM 30), Pacific unit assignments, the ROC buyer line, and the awards array are NavSource-sourced and not independently corroborated by DANFS (DANFS omits EAME entirely). The page itself flags China Service as 'not documented.' Contains no asbestos content. The ROC-era fate is stated as unknown.

- Finding
- The ship's own wartime action report (read this session from the digitized scans) documents her EAME service: on 30 August 1944, German shore batteries on the Island of Guernsey shelled a convoy of LSTs 310, 1002, and 980 escorted by PC 1233, proceeding from Omaha Beach, Normandy to St. Michel en Greve, Brittany, carrying 207 tons of Army Class V explosives. First burst 0830 at ~15.5 miles from position 49 31.0 N, 03 03.0 W; the battery was 'three guns of approximately 305mm'; firing continued to 0910 as the range opened to 21 miles; all shots landed within 100-500 yards and shrapnel fell on the main and boat decks; no damage or casualties. Signed S. Edelson (CO); enclosure report by M. M. Sachs, Lt.(jg) USNR (XO). Endorsements by Commander LST Group FORTY-EIGHT (Daniel Stubbs, 17 Sep 1944 - noting the reference to 'all available steam' should read 'available speed,' consistent with the diesel plant, and that 'the convoy was obviously taken too close to the Island of Guernsey') and Commander LST Flotilla EIGHTEEN (T. W. Greene, 28 Sep 1944); routed via Commander 12th Fleet / 11th Amphibious Force.

- Digitized muster rolls covering this hull's entire commissioned life (25 June 1944 - 22 May 1946) are publicly available: 248 page-images. The forwarding sheet of the commissioning-day roll (image inspected this session) shows NAVPERS 605 submitted 25 June 1944, certified by M. M. Sachs (Executive Officer), approved by S. Edelson (Commanding Officer) 29 June 1944, forwarded from USS LST-1002 via Fleet Post Office New York - consistent with the NavSource CO/XO names. The roll set is the authoritative name-level record of who served aboard and when, including the Report of Changes and Recapitulation sheets.

- Finding
- A diesel-powered LST-542-class hull built in May-June 1944 at a U.S. Navy shipyard sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era. Because the type carried diesel engines rather than a steam plant, the boiler/turbine lagging pathway does not apply; era-standard asbestos-relevant applications aboard a ship of this type and period were diesel exhaust and engine-room thermal/acoustic insulation, gaskets and valve packing on piping and machinery, deck coverings and tile, bulkhead and accommodation-space insulation, and winch/windlass brake linings. Construction-yard and crew populations fall within the era exposure envelope.

- Locator
- GAO product page HRD-80-2, Highlights section
- Finding type

- Finding
- GAO documented Navy asbestos-insulation use and management: the Navy's 1975 policy was to remove and replace with nonasbestos materials only insulation that was damaged or had to be removed for necessary repairs, modified in 1979 to include selective replacement in high-maintenance areas - and GAO's review covered the use of asbestos in Navy ships and the cost of removing it. This hull left U.S. custody in May 1946, decades before these programs, so nothing was documented as removed from her under any Navy abatement policy.

CourtListener returned zero hits for 'LST-1002' in both the opinion index and the docket index (authenticated API v4, 2026-10-02). Secondary web sweeps surface only law-firm marketing listicles for this hull type - excluded by source policy. The hull's short U.S. career (23 months, ending May 1946) precedes the Navy asbestos-management era and modern hazmat-disclosure practice; her post-1946 ROC custody is undocumented. - CORRECTION: two secondary databases attribute this hull's construction to Norfolk Navy Yard, Portsmouth VA - uboat.net ship 12062 and the Portuguese Wikipedia stub that draws on it. Both are wrong against the primary record: DANFS states she 'was laid down on 3 May 1944 at the Boston Navy Yard,' and NavSource and NavalCoverMuseum concur.
