Documented for this hull: 'LST-1005 was laid down on 2 February 1944 at Quincy, Mass., by the Bethlehem Steel Co.; launched on 11 March 1944; and commissioned on 6 April 1944. Following World War II, LST-1005 performed occupation duty in the Far East until early 1946. She was decommissioned on 6 April 1946 after removal of all salvageable equipment following damage sustained in beaching operations. Her hulk was later destroyed. The ship was struck from the Navy list on 17 April 1946.'

George I. North USN in command. WWII assignment: Asiatic-Pacific Theater, LST Flotilla Thirty-Seven (CAPT. Riley), LST Group One Hundred Ten (LCDR. C. Alexander), LST Division Two Hundred-Nineteen. Post-war Navy Occupation Service Medal periods listed: 15-25 October 1945 and 18 November 1945-5 May 1946. 'Severely damaged by collision with USS LST-814 during a beaching operation off Sasebo, Japan, 30 December 1945.' Decommissioned 6 April 1946; struck from the Naval Register 17 April 1946; final disposition 'hulk destroyed.' Limitations
NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - its milestone dates match DANFS but the collision-partner identification (LST-814) rests on NavSource alone; DANFS confirms only 'damage sustained in beaching operations.' The listed occupation-service window (to 5 May 1946) extends past the 6 April 1946 decommissioning - internal inconsistency, see gaps. No asbestos content. NOTE: this page's photo captions for AWM images 131746/131747 misidentify the second Okunoshima hulk as ex-LST-1005 - see ev-uss-lst-1005-lst1005-04.

    Finding
NavSource's LST-814 page corroborates the beaching casualty from the other side: 'Severely damaged by collision with USS LST-1005 during a beaching operation off Sasebo, Japan, 30 December 1945.' LST-814 decommissioned 16 April 1946, struck 8 May 1946, final disposition 'sunk, 12 August 1946' - the date and disposition matching the AWM-documented Operation Lewisite scuttling of LST-814 with a chemical-munitions cargo.

    Limitations
Corroborates that an LST-1005/LST-814 collision is carried in the NavSource record for both hulls, but the ultimate source of the pairing is not cited - DANFS for LST-814 confirms only 'severely damaged during a beaching operation off Sasebo, Japan, on 30 December 1945' without naming LST-1005. The AWM caption for the Okunoshima hulks attributes their damage to 'a typhoon which had recently struck the island' - a different damage framing that remains unresolved (see gaps).

    Finding
CORRECTION: NavSource captions AWM photographs 131746 and 131747 on its USS LST-1005 page as showing 'ex-USS LST-814 (left) and ex-USS LST-1005 (right)' at Okunoshima being loaded with poison gas for Operation Lewisite scuttling in the Philippine Sea. The primary record contradicts this: the AWM's own caption for 131746 reads 'LANDING SHIPS TANKS 814 (LEFT) AND 128 (RIGHT)'; the official 1946 BCOF disposal report states 'LSTs 814 and 128 (decommissioned) procured from 8th Army for transport to scuttling grounds at sea' and 'LST 814 and LST 128, decommissioned, were beached at North Beach, Okunoshima, 1 June 1946'; a photograph printed in the report itself shows the moored hulk with hull number '128' painted on the bow; AWM 131748 documents 'LST 128 WAS SUNK ON 1946-08-28, LOADED WITH 2600 TONS OF GAS.' Peer-reviewed literature (Browne & Malloy, J. Maritime Archaeology 19(4), 2024) citing this report likewise identifies the hulks as LSTs 814 and 128. The claim that ex-LST-1005 was the second Operation Lewisite disposal hulk is therefore a NavSource caption misattribution; DANFS states only that LST-1005's 'hulk was later destroyed,' with manner and location undocumented.

BCOF 17 CRE Works and Teikoku Rayon Company disposal labor (1946) - for the 814/128 hulks only
    Limitations
Corrects a circulating misidentification, not an asbestos finding. The primary report is dispositive for the two gas-hulk identities but does not state what became of LST-1005's hulk - 'hulk destroyed' (DANFS) is all that is officially documented; whether LST-1005 was broken up in place, scuttled conventionally, or otherwise disposed is an open gap. Report also documents the scuttling ground at Lat. 32-30'N, 134-10'E in '3000 plus fathoms' and loading preparations undertaken 28 June 1946 - those details pertain to LST-814/LST-128, not this hull.

The LST-1005 deck logs are digitized and publicly accessible inside NARA file unit NAID 118967604 (the range file ends with this hull). The war diaries of LST Group One Hundred Ten - the group to which NavSource assigns LST-1005 - are likewise digitized. These are the primary records that would document the 30 December 1945 Sasebo casualty, the occupation-duty timeline, and the decommissioning sequence from the ship's own record.

    Finding
An LST-542-class diesel tank landing ship built in early 1944 at Bethlehem Steel's Quincy (Fore River) yard sits inside the documented asbestos shipbuilding era; the builder yard has documented asbestos products in the Atlas shipyard registry (fireproofing, gaskets, packing, electrical components, wire insulation, asbestos cement, asbestos-containing paint). Era-standard asbestos-relevant applications aboard a diesel LST of this period were diesel-exhaust and engine-room lagging, gaskets, valve packing, deck coverings, and accommodation insulation; the diesel plant (no boilers) removes the steam-line/boiler lagging pathway of steam vessels.

GAO documented Navy use of asbestos insulation aboard ships and the Navy's asbestos-protection program: the 1975 policy removed asbestos insulation only when damaged or required for repairs, modified in 1979 to selectively replace asbestos insulation in high-maintenance areas - establishing that asbestos shipbuilding/removal practice spans this hull's 1944 construction era. No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located for this hull: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or litigation naming USS LST-1005 / LST-1005 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CourtListener was searched this session with authenticated quota: '"USS LST-1005"' type=o returned 0; '"LST-1005"' type=o returned 1 noise result (untitled Texas AG opinion, not vessel-related); '"LST-1005"' type=r returned 2 OCR-noise dockets; unquoted 'LST-1005' type=o returned 49 irrelevant BM25 hits - classified no qualifying litigation / no name-collision litigation, a true negative. The hull was destroyed in 1946, so no museum-condition or extant-hull survey track exists.

Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - 1944 construction at a documented-asbestos yard in the Navy's asbestos era is consistent with era-standard materials. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility. The deck-log and war-diary file units (ev-05) are unread primary records that could still contain material or repair references.
