    Finding
A diesel-powered LST-542-class tank landing ship built in 44 days (laid 31 March - commissioned 14 May 1944) at a Bethlehem Steel yard sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era; era-standard applications aboard a ship of this type and period were diesel-exhaust lagging, engine-room thermal/acoustic insulation, gaskets, valve packing, deck coverings/tile, and accommodation insulation in berthing and galley spaces. As a diesel ship she carried no boilers or steam turbines - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply, but the confined engine-room and accommodation spaces remain the relevant exposure geometry.

  5. [5]Oliver v. Campbell-McCormick, Inc. et al. (incl. General Electric Co.), U.S. District Court D. Maryland, Civ. No. 1:16-cv-01057, Memorandum (ECF 105, filed 18 July 2016) - sever-and-remand ruling [court_record]

ECF 105 memorandum, pp. 1-2 (Background: employment and diagnosis allegations)
    Finding type
    litigation_documented
    Finding
Yard-level litigation context for this hull's builder: the memorandum recounts that plaintiff Wayne Oliver 'worked as a pipefitter's and drafting apprentice at Fore River Shipyard in Quincy, Massachusetts from 1967 to 1970' and was diagnosed with mesothelioma in spring 2015, which he alleged was caused by exposure to defendants' asbestos-containing products. Establishes that asbestos-disease litigation naming Fore River Shipyard, Quincy, reached federal court - the same yard where this hull was built 23 years earlier.

    Limitations
Pleading-stage allegation recounted in a procedural (sever-and-remand) memorandum - NOT an adjudicated finding of asbestos conditions at the yard, and the exposure window (1967-70) postdates this hull's 1944 construction. Yard-level record: does not establish any material, condition, or exposure aboard LST-1018 or any specific hull. PDF full text verified 2026-10-02 (HTTP 200).

[7]Batch-6506 search ledger (this record): DANFS (live); NavSource (live); NVR (not covered - disposed pre-1987); Australian War Memorial OG1904 (live); CourtListener API v4 opinion and docket indexes, exact string "LST-1018" (0 results each); shipyards.json yard cross-check; govinfo court PDF (verified); GAO product page; secondary web litigation sweep [other_primary]
    Locator
    search_ledger rows sl-uss-lst-1018-01 through -14
    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or docketed case naming USS LST-1018 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CourtListener returned zero results on 2026-10-02 for "LST-1018" (opinion and docket indexes), "LST 1018" unhyphenated (opinion index), and "USS LST-1018" (opinion index) - a true negative on the indexes searched; the two docket-index variants could not be run before report time (fleet-wide pacing throttle) and are logged as a residual coverage gap, not a negative result. Secondary web sweeps surfaced no qualifying litigation - only law-firm marketing listicles asserting asbestos aboard LSTs generically, excluded by source policy (one misattributes 'boiler room'/'steam pipes' asbestos to the diesel-powered LST-542 class).

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1944 mass-production amphibious ship is era-consistent with retained asbestos materials. Deck logs, Bethlehem Quincy work packages, and any scrapping-contract records are undigitized leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
