    Finding
LST-1039 was laid down 26 November 1944 at Pittsburgh, Pa., by the Dravo Corp.; launched 6 January 1945; sponsored by Mrs. Jack H. Johnston; commissioned 9 February 1945, Lt. G. E. Paris in command. Assigned to the Asiatic-Pacific theater, she participated in the assault and occupation of Okinawa Gunto in June 1945, performed occupation duty in the Far East until early April 1946, returned to the United States, decommissioned 21 June 1946, was struck from the Navy list 31 July 1946, and on 2 September 1947 was sold to the Columbia River Packers Association, Inc., for operation. She earned one battle star for World War II service.

    Limitations
NavSource is a volunteer-compiled photographic archive, not an official Navy source - treated here as the canonical per-hull reference consistent with project practice; its timeline agrees with DANFS on every overlapping point. Merchant-era particulars rest on photo captions and contributor notes; final disposition unknown; the Tinian flag state conflicts with secondary literature (see gaps). No asbestos or materials content.

    Finding
The ship's own ferry-crew voyage report records reduced-commission acceptance at the Dravo Corp. Neville Island yard on 30 January 1945 by Lt. R. B. McArthur, USNR, with Ferry Crew #15 plus officers (including Lt. G. E. Paris, USN, and Ens. R. A. Corcoran, USNR) and enlisted men of the prospective commissioning complement; the log tracks the Ohio-and-Mississippi river passage through the lock system to Naval Station Algiers, LA, arriving 9 February 1945. A second scanned document carries despatch orders for Task Unit 96.4.13 (ComLSTGrp 107) directing the loaded ship from Yokohama to Pearl Harbor on 12 April 1946, reporting onward to Commander, Administrative Command, Amphibious Forces, Pacific.

    Locator
NavSource LST type index (class descriptions) + USS LST-1039 specifications block
    Finding type
    asbestos_application
    Finding
LST-1039 belongs to the LST-542 class ('Chelan County' class, 611 vessels), essentially similar to the LST-1 and LST-491 classes, built at both coastal and inland Ohio/Mississippi-system yards. Era/design inference for this diesel-powered hull (no boilers): asbestos-relevant applications aboard a 1944-45 LST were engine and exhaust-system lagging and gaskets, machinery packing, engine-room and accommodation thermal/acoustic insulation, deck coverings, and winch/windlass brake linings; the diesel plant narrows but does not eliminate era-typical insulation uses. WWII shipbuilding operated under federal asbestos priority allocations, and period gasket, packing, lagging, and deck-covering products commonly contained asbestos.

Construction trades (Dravo Neville Island, 1944-45); ship's company; merchant crews
    Limitations
Design-level inference, not a hull record - no material schedule, specification extract, or survey names this vessel; the class index establishes design grouping only. Does not establish that asbestos was installed, its quantity, or what remained aboard into merchant service. The BuShips Ships' Data 1945 v2 design table previously cited by the class profile (shipscribe.com) returned 404 on 2026-10-02 with no Wayback capture - design-table details for this record rest on the ship's NavSource specifications block instead.

    Finding
The Pennsylvania historical-marker program documents that Dravo's Neville Island yard was the Navy's lead designer and builder of LSTs - assembly-line prefabrication and welded construction, an expanded East Yard on a 66-acre riverside field, and more than 670 LSTs sent down the Ohio and Mississippi during the war, including the hull that became LST-1039 (Dravo Pittsburgh block).

    Limitations

  8. [8]CourtListener API v4 authenticated search, 'LST-1039' (opinion index, type=o): 38 hits, all token-level name collisions - none names the vessel. Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
No qualifying asbestos litigation naming USS LST-1039 located: opinion-index search 'LST-1039' returned only name collisions (numeric/token matches on '1039' and 'LST' appearing separately in unrelated opinions). No survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or docketed asbestos case naming the hull was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). Law-firm listicle content asserting asbestos aboard LST-type vessels exists but is excluded by source policy.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - era-consistent insulation materials were typical of 1944-45 construction. The docket-index (RECAP) sweep could not be completed this session (fleet-wide request pacing; logged in search_ledger), so docket-level coverage is incomplete. Does not establish or defeat any exposure or legal-eligibility claim.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
NARA holds the U.S. Navy deck-log series covering commissioned vessels of this era; LST-1039's deck logs (commissioned 9 February 1945 - decommissioned 21 June 1946) are the likeliest remaining primary record of daily operation and any material-handling events aboard, but per-hull digitization status was not confirmed - the National Archives Catalog search interface is JavaScript-gated for automated access.
