    Limitations
Volunteer-maintained archive, not an official record - used for unit/specification detail corroborated against DANFS where overlapping. Complement figures are NavSource-only (DANFS silent). Contains no asbestos information. The occupation/China date table contains an impossible '41 November' typo (see gaps).

    asbestos_application
    Finding
Era/design inference for a 1944-45 diesel-powered LST: with no boilers or steam plant, the asbestos-relevant applications are diesel exhaust lagging and gaskets, engine-room thermal and acoustic insulation, deck coverings, bulkhead and accommodation insulation, valve packing, and winch/crane brake linings; insulation, gasket, and friction products of this construction era were commonly manufactured with asbestos fiber.

    Limitations
Class/era inference only - no ship-specific material schedule, survey, abatement record, or crew account located for this hull. Establishes no quantities, no present-day presence, and no exposure for any individual. The underlying BuShips Ships' Data 1945 v2 scan (shipscribe.com) returned HTTP 404 at research time (2026-10-02) with no Wayback snapshot - see search_ledger sl-uss-lst-1040-09.

GAO product page HRD-80-2 (full text HTTP 403, 2026-10-02)
    Finding type
    gov_survey
    Finding
GAO documented the Navy's asbestos-protection program: standing policy (1975) removed asbestos insulation only when damaged or when required for repairs, modified in 1979 to selective replacement in high-maintenance areas - meaning original-era insulation typically remained in place for decades unless a yard period disturbed it. This post-dates the hull's U.S. Navy custody by roughly three decades and has no direct bearing on her 1944-46 configuration.

    Limitations
Program-level documentation, not hull- or class-specific; the ship left U.S. custody in October 1946, long before these policies. Full text blocked to automated fetch (HTTP 403, standing since BATCH-01); content via the GAO product-page description.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or docketed case naming LST-1040 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CourtListener opinion and docket searches for "LST-1040" each returned zero hits.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - era-consistent inference remains plausible. The hull's 1946 sale out of U.S. custody and unknown final disposition foreclose most later documentation channels (no museum, no NDRF custody, no MARAD file). Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
