Port; and commissioned on 2 March 1945, Lt. Frank P. Eldredge in command. Following World War II, LST-1044 performed occupation duty in the Far East and saw service in China until mid-April 1946. She returned to the United States and was decommissioned on 28 June 1946 and struck from the Navy list on 31 July that same year. On 8 January 1948, the ship was sold to Pablo N. - NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation tracking official sources (dates here match DANFS), not a primary registry - its Argentine-era narrative derives from Argentine sources and carries one transcription defect ('(BDT-120)' after the 1959 renaming; the documented later pennant is Q-50 per the Histarmar Argentine fleet list - see correction row). - The National Archives Catalog holds digitized primary records for this hull: six file units 'USS LST-1044 - War Diary' covering 5/1-31/45, 6/1-30/45, 7/1-31/45, 8/1-31/45, 9/1/45-11/30/45, and 12/1-31/45 (NAIDs 140020691, 101736346, 101773376, 77508414, 140081922, 140084395), unrestricted and viewable online (Fold3 scans), plus the RG-38 war-diary index unit covering hulls LSI(L)-1091 through LST-1106 (NAID 278465659). These are the ship's own operational records - the strongest available ship-specific primary documentary track.

- Official BuShips design data for the LST type covering this hull's design group: 328 ft oa, 50 ft beam, ~2,366 t light / 3,960-4,080 t trial, 11.6 kt, two GM 12-567A diesels at 1,700 shp (engine-variant blocks LST932-979 and LST1060-1080 carried GM 12-278A); accommodations 13 officers / ~106 enlisted. Establishes that this hull's machinery plant was diesel - no boilers - which bounds the steam-lagging exposure pathway.

- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- For a diesel-powered LST-542 hull built 1944-45, the era-consistent asbestos applications are: diesel-exhaust lagging and gaskets on the two GM 12-567A engines, engine-room thermal and acoustic insulation, deck coverings and tile, bulkhead and accommodation insulation, and brake linings on winches and windlass. The diesel plant means no boiler or steam-line lagging - the largest asbestos application aboard steam-era naval vessels is absent from this design.

- Histarmar fleet list, Cabo San Pio row (BDT10/Q-50)
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- The Argentine fleet list row for this hull reads: 'Cabo San Pio | BDT10 | Q-50 Buque Desembarco de tanques | USS LST 1044 | 1947-1981.' This corrects NavSource's '(BDT-120)' notation after the 1959 disarming/renaming - the documented later pennant is Q-50 - and carries Argentine service 1947-1981, versus NavSource's June 1948 resale date and 1980 scrapping sale. Argentine sources frame the ship as acquired under Argentine naval control from 1947 with final service end in 1981.

- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, material schedule, or docketed/opinion-level case naming LST-1044 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). - Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1944-45 combat-built hull is era-consistent with retained asbestos-containing materials through her 1980-81 disposal. CourtListener coverage caveat: hull-designation searches on 'LST-1044'/'LST 1044' cannot catch litigation that names the ship only by a crewmember's narrative or the Argentine name; the 'Cabo San Pio' search was attempted but the fleet request budget was exhausted at session end (see search_ledger). Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
