- Finding
- MARAD ShipHistory carries a record for LST-1046: General Type 'Naval Combatant', Specific Type 'LST Tank Landing Ship', MARAD Type 'Military'; Fate: 'Sold - No Further Info'. The record contains no milestones, no digitized status cards, no documents, no images, and no historical narrative; 'Year Built' displays the placeholder 9999.

- Limitations
- Confirms the hull exists in MARAD's custody/disposal database but is skeletal - the 1947 disposal sale (which the Maritime Commission typically administered for surplus naval auxiliaries) is reflected only as 'Sold - No Further Info'. No dates, buyer, asbestos, materials, or condition information; supports no asbestos claim.

- Finding
- Era/design inference for this diesel-powered LST-542-class hull: the ship carried no boilers or steam plant (two GM 12-567A diesels, 1,700 shp - NavSource specifications), so the asbestos-relevant applications aboard were the era-standard diesel-vessel applications - diesel engine and exhaust lagging, machinery gaskets and valve packing, engine-room thermal and acoustic insulation, deck coverings and tile, bulkhead and accommodation insulation, and winch/crane brake linings. Peer-reviewed historical scholarship documents that asbestos was used extensively as an insulating and fireproofing material in U.S. shipbuilding during WWII, the program under which this hull was mass-produced in 1944-45.

- WWII shipyard workers and ship crews (class context); construction trades (Dravo, Pittsburgh, 1944-45)
- Limitations
- Class/era inference only - no material schedule, plan, survey, or worker account names this hull. The cited article documents WWII shipbuilding asbestos use generally and does not mention this vessel or LSTs specifically. Does not establish that asbestos was or remains aboard this hull, nor quantity, location, condition, exposure, or causation.

- Finding
- Builder-level corporate asbestos record: stipulated facts in the Pennsylvania proceedings record that Dravo Corporation (builder of this hull) was 'involved in a number of businesses involving heavy industry,' including manufacturing watercraft, and that 'since at least the early 1990s, Dravo had been sued in a number of lawsuits that sought damages due to alleged bodily injury caused by exposure to asbestos, where the exposure typically occurred during its operations from the 1940s through the 1980s.' Procedural posture: Allegheny County CCP granted summary judgment to parent Carmeuse Lime (2022-10-05); the Superior Court reversed and remanded (307 A.3d 146, 2023-12-19); the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania reversed the Superior Court (2026-05-22), holding veil-piercing unavailable because the underlying claims against dissolved Dravo were time-barred under the LLC Act claim-bar mechanism - the asbestos plaintiffs' exposure claims were never tried on the merits.

- Asbestos tort claimants against Dravo Corporation (corporate context)
- Limitations
- Corporate/builder-level record only - no hull, vessel, Neville Island shipyard exposure, or individual claimant is identified in the appellate opinions; the allegations of asbestos exposure during Dravo operations (1940s-1980s) were stipulated background, not adjudicated findings, and the appeals were resolved on dissolution/veil-piercing law (a non-exposure ground). Classified at the lowest stage: the underlying exposure claims never reached a merits adjudication. Does not establish any condition aboard this vessel.

- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, crew medical study, or docketed case naming LST-1046 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). The ship's short active life (commissioned 1945-03-28, decommissioned 1946-06-27) and disposal for scrapping in 1947 predate federal asbestos documentation programs.
