DANFS, verbatim: 'LST-1051 was laid down on 21 January 1945 at Pittsburgh, Pa., by the Dravo Corp,; launched on 3 March 1945; sponsored by Mrs. Charles F. Posten; and commissioned on 7 April 1945. Following World War II, LST-1051 performed occupation duty in the Far East until early January 1946. She returned to the United States and was decommissioned on 7 May 1946 and struck from the Navy list on 5 June that same year. On 13 June 1948, the ship was sold to the Walter W. Johnson Co., for scrapping.'

Dravo Neville Island construction trades (Jan-Apr 1945); ship's company 1945-1946; Walter W. Johnson Co. shipbreakers (1948)
    Limitations
DANFS is the ship's complete official entry and names this hull, but it contains no asbestos or materials information, lists no combat operations (she commissioned 7 April 1945 and reached post-war occupation service rather than amphibious assaults), gives no location for decommissioning or for reserve-fleet berthing between June 1946 and the June 1948 sale, and does not state where scrapping was performed.

The official BuShips roster lists LST1051 under 'Dravo Corp., Neville Island, Pa.' (ditto resolved from LST1044, the block's explicit builder line) with keel laid 21 Jan 45, ship launched 3 Mar 45, first commission 7 Apr 45 - matching DANFS and NavSource exactly.

Dravo Neville Island construction trades (1945)
    Limitations
Contemporaneous official U.S. Navy document naming this hull - the strongest available source for build data. The volume is dated April 1945 (printed roster sheets carry a Dec 1945 cover letter), so decommission/strike/disposal are not in scope for it. Contains no asbestos or materials data. NOTE: the URL cited in class-f's lst-1-class profile (shipscribe.com/styles/usnaux/sdb/SDB1945v2.pdf) now returns 404; the file moved to shipscribe.com/pubs/SDB1945v2.pdf - verified live 2026-10-02.

    Finding
The BuShips design table assigns hull group LST980-1059 - which includes LST-1051 - two G.M. Diesel 12-567A engines at 1,700 shp on two propellers. Boiler and steam-condition columns are populated only for the turbine LST1153-1155 group; the diesel LST groups carry no boilers. The characteristics table lists trial displacement 3,960 t., maximum navigation draft 14 ft 1 in, and accommodations for 13 officers and 106 enlisted.

    Limitations
Design-group data, not an as-built hull survey - establishes the design plant for the hull block, not what was actually installed in LST-1051. NavSource's per-hull spec block independently lists the same engine type (2 x GM 12-567A, 900 hp each), so the two sources agree. Contains no asbestos or materials data.

Philip (n) Drucker (D) USNR in command; assigned during WWII to the Asiatic-Pacific Theater under LST Flotilla Thirty-Four (CAPT. C. A. H. H. Tiemroth), LST Group One Hundred, LST Division One Hundred Ninety-Nine; Navy Occupation Service Medal periods 2 September - 15 December 1945 and 22 October 1945 - 5 January 1946; awards listed are American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal (no battle stars shown), World War II Victory Medal, Navy Occupation Service Medal with Asia clasp; radio call sign NABQ. Spec block: 2 x GM 12-567A 900 hp diesels, single Falk main reduction gear, three diesel-drive 100 kW 230 V DC ship's-service generators, two propellers 1,700 shp, 2 LCVP. Commanding officers: LT. Contributed items include launch and commissioning photographs, the 13 March 1945 crew reporting orders issued by Amphibious Training Base Bradford NOB, Norfolk, VA, and a ports-of-call/mileage document covering 7 April 1945 - 4 February 1946 (contributed by the last CO), plus a photo of the ship underway in San Francisco Bay returning from Far East duty in 1946.

  5. [5]Consolidated era inference - BuShips SDB-1945 v2 machinery data for the LST-980-1059 group (2 x GM 12-567A diesels, no boilers) plus era amphibious-ship construction practice, during the period when the federal government had reserved asbestos supply for shipbuilding [other_primary]

    Finding
Era/design inference for a 1945 diesel-powered LST: no boilers aboard, so the steam-plant lagging pathway does not apply; asbestos-relevant applications for the type are GM diesel exhaust lagging and gaskets, engine-room thermal and acoustic insulation, deck coverings/tile, bulkhead and accommodation insulation, winch and windlass brake linings, valve packing, and electrical insulation.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or verified litigation naming USS LST-1051 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CourtListener searches returned zero results across the board - 'LST-1051' and 'LST 1051' in the opinion index and 'LST-1051' in the RECAP/docket index. Secondary web sweeps surfaced no qualifying case - the only 'asbestos aboard LST-1051'-type material in circulation is law-firm listicle content asserting asbestos without primary sourcing, excluded by source policy.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - era inference remains reasonable and consistent. The hull's short life (commissioned April 1945, decommissioned May 1946, scrapped by 1948) means it predates the Navy's postwar asbestos-removal programs entirely. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.

    Finding
LST-1051's deck logs for her commissioning span (7 April 1945 - 7 May 1946) would sit in NARA RG 24 logbook series; the NARA catalog is JavaScript-rendered and whether this hull's logs are digitized is unverified. NavSource hosts contributed primary artifacts for this hull - the crew's 13 March 1945 reporting orders from Amphibious Training Base Bradford NOB Norfolk and a ports-of-call/mileage document covering 7 April 1945 - 4 February 1946 - which constitute a ship-specific operational record lead.

The NavSource-hosted images are crew-contributed artifacts, not official records; their content was not fully transcribed this session. No asbestos content expected or claimed.
