Documented for this hull: 'LST-1056 was laid down on 20 January 1945 at Pittsburgh, Pa., by the Dravo Corp.; launched on 24 March 1945; sponsored by Mrs. W. M. Harrison; and commissioned on 2 May 1945.' Following World War II she 'performed occupation duty in the Far East and saw service in China until early July 1946. She was decommissioned on 12 July 1946 and sold to Bosey, Philippines, on 20 January 1947. The ship was struck from the Navy list on 10 June 1947.'

    Limitations
Ship-specific history only; no asbestos or material content. DANFS records no WWII operational detail for this hull beyond its postwar occupation/China service - the entry covers essentially the whole career. Note the documented order of events: sale (20 January 1947) precedes striking (10 June 1947); both dates are as DANFS states them.

The flotilla assignment, CO list, awards, and photo captions are secondary-source detail not individually verified against primary records. Finding
A diesel-powered LST built January-May 1945 sits inside the documented WWII-era asbestos-use window for shipbuilding. Era-standard applications aboard a vessel of this type and period: diesel-engine exhaust lagging and gaskets, engine-room thermal and acoustic insulation, deck coverings/tile, bulkhead and accommodation insulation, machinery gaskets and packing, and winch/crane brake linings. As a diesel plant she carried no boilers - the boiler/steam-line lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply.

    Limitations
Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation survey, material schedule, or work package located for LST-1056. Names era-standard applications, not confirmed installed materials. No quantity, no manufacturer attribution, no individual exposure. Her short career (commissioned May 1945 - decommissioned July 1946) and 1947 commercial sale mean no postwar Navy yard-period documentation exists for this hull.

    Finding type
    regulatory
    Finding
Navy policy documents era asbestos practice: 'Any ship whose keel was laid prior to 1980 will be considered to contain friable asbestos thermal systems insulation (TSI), and must therefore maintain an EART [emergency asbestos response team]' (ch. B1 para. 3.d); ships whose keels were laid during or after 1980 'were prohibited by Federal regulation' from TSI construction (para. 3.e). The instruction's ACM inventory for Navy ships lists insulation for machinery, boilers and piping, gasket material, electrical wiring, certain deck tiles and decorative paneling, and packing material - friable examples: pipe lagging, acoustical insulation, high-temperature sheet gasket; non-friable examples: brake and clutch linings, gaskets and adhesives, floor tile. LST-1056's keel was laid 20 January 1945 - inside the pre-1980 presumption window.

    Population
Pre-1980-keel Navy ships (management population); applied here as era context for a 1945 keel
    Limitations
Policy presumption, not a hull record: OPNAVINST 5100.19F is an afloat-management rule treating pre-1980 keels as TSI-bearing for response-protocol purposes - it does not establish that this specific hull contained asbestos in 1945-46, and by its own terms the presumption governs in-service Navy ships, not a hull sold out of service in 1947. No quantity, no installation confirmation. Cited via verified Wayback capture; the live PDF is blocked to automated fetch.

    Finding
Builder-level asbestos litigation documented: 'Since at least the early 1990s, Dravo had been sued in a number of lawsuits that sought damages due to alleged bodily injury caused by exposure to asbestos, where the exposure typically occurred during its operations from the 1940s through the 1980s' (Superior Court recital of stipulated facts). 'Hundreds of asbestos claimants' asserted claims by the July 13, 2020 dissolution-claim bar date; Dravo resolved all timely filed asbestos claims through insurance settlements under court oversight. The Pennsylvania Supreme Court (May 22, 2026) held that veil piercing is not available to revive time-barred tort claims against dissolved Dravo LLC's parent Carmeuse Lime - reversing the Superior Court, which had reversed the trial court's summary judgment for CLI.

Dravo operations workforce incl. shipyard trades (1940s-1980s exposure window alleged); asbestos claimants
    Limitations
Builder/company-level litigation context, not a hull record: the opinions concern successor liability and the LLC Act claim bar - they make no findings about asbestos conditions aboard any vessel Dravo built, do not name LST-1056 or the Neville Island shipyard product line specifically, and establish only that asbestos-related claims against Dravo's operations existed, were settled when timely, and are time-barred when late. Litigation-stage classification: appellate ruling on a legal bar (dissolution/veil-piercing), not an exposure adjudication.

    Finding
Government industrial-hygiene record fixing the builder's yard identity: Dravo's Engineering Works Division shipyard was located on Neville Island, Pittsburgh - the 'Dravo Corp., Pittsburgh' yard that built this hull. The July 1981 NIOSH survey evaluated occupational exposure in painting/coating processes during barge and towboat construction; sampling covered organic solvents, metals, and nuisance dust, finding lead and nuisance-dust exceedances of OSHA standards.

    Limitations
Yard-identity and industrial-hygiene context only: the abstracted findings concern solvents, lead, and nuisance dust - asbestos was not an evaluated analyte in this survey's abstract, and no asbestos finding should be attributed to it. The survey postdates this hull's construction by 36 years and describes a different production line (barges/towboats). It establishes where the Pittsburgh yard was and that the yard operated under federal industrial-hygiene scrutiny - nothing about this hull or its materials.

CourtListener coverage is complete for exact hull-number forms (hyphenated and unhyphenated, opinions and dockets); it does not cover cases where the hull appears only in deposition exhibits or unindexed filings.
