- Finding
- DANFS states that LST-1062 was laid down on 30 December 1944 at Hingham, Massachusetts, by Bethlehem-Hingham Shipyard, Inc.; launched on 6 February 1945; and commissioned on 5 March 1945, with Lt. T. M. Robinson in command. It performed occupation duty in the Far East until early April 1946, returned to the United States, was decommissioned on 27 June 1946, struck from the Navy list on 31 July 1946, and sold to Bethlehem Pacific Coast Steel Corp. for scrapping on 25 November 1947.

[2]Bureau of Ships, Ships' Data, U.S. Naval Vessels, Vol. II (NAVSHIPS 250-011, 15 April 1945), scan [other_primary]
- Locator
- Roster rows LST1060-LST1065; LST design tables pp. 168-170 (printed pagination)
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- The Bureau of Ships roster lists LST-1062 as built by “Bethlehem Steel Co., Hingham, Mass.” and gives 30 December 1944 (laid down), 6 February 1945 (launched), and 6 March 1945 (commissioned). This agrees with DANFS on builder location and the first two dates but differs by one day on commissioning; the commissioning date remains unresolved. The volume’s LST design table places hulls LST1060-1080 in a group powered by two General Motors 12-278A diesel engines, with no boiler entry shown for that group.

- Shipyard trades (1944-1945)
- Limitations
- Official Bureau of Ships publication, accessed as a scan hosted by Shipscribe; the source text is the Navy volume. The group table gives design-level data for LST1060-1080, not a hull-specific as-built machinery survey, and contains no asbestos information. DANFS gives 5 March while this roster gives 6 March; no source in this search resolved the discrepancy.

[3]U.S. General Accounting Office, Navy Efforts To Protect Workers From Asbestos Exposure, HRD-80-2 (18 October 1979) [gao]
- Locator
- Report pp. 1-2, Navy policy on use of asbestos; GAO product record HRD-80-2
- Finding type
- gov_survey
- Finding
- GAO reported that Navy officials described asbestos as historically used aboard Navy ships and stated that the Navy issued a policy in October 1975 to eliminate asbestos where suitable alternatives had been designated. This supplies broad Navy-era context for a ship built in 1944-1945; it does not identify LST-1062, its design group, or any material installed aboard it.

- Navy shipyard workers and Navy asbestos-control program
- Limitations
- Program-level Navy evidence only. The report describes fleet-wide policy and shipyard reviews; it is not a survey of this hull or this class and does not establish asbestos presence, product, location, quantity, condition, or exposure aboard LST-1062. Direct PDF fetch returned HTTP 403 from this network; the GAO page and indexed report text were located through web search.

[4]Source-limited negative finding based on the DANFS entry, 1945 Bureau of Ships volume, GAO HRD-80-2, and National Archives Catalog search documented in this record’s search_ledger [other_primary]

- Search ledger rows sl-uss-lst-1062-lst1062-01 through -06
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No ship-specific asbestos survey, abatement record, hazmat disclosure, or material schedule for LST-1062 was located in the sources actually reviewed for this record. The sources reviewed do not establish asbestos aboard this hull.

- Limitations
- This is a bounded search result, not proof that asbestos was absent. Firecrawl research was unavailable due keyless quota exhaustion; the authenticated CourtListener helper stopped at the fleet pacing stand-down before returning results, so litigation coverage is incomplete. No CourtListener negative finding or litigation classification is claimed.

- Locator
- NARA digitized-deck-logs guidance; Catalog query https://catalog.archives.gov/search?q=LST-1062
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- The National Archives describes an ongoing digitization program that includes some 1941-1950 Navy deck logs and directs researchers to search the Catalog by ship name and “Deck Log.” A Catalog search for LST-1062 returned only the JavaScript application shell in this access path; no hull-specific log record or digitized file unit was confirmed.
