- Finding
- USS LST-1065 was an LST-542-class tank landing ship laid down 12 January 1945 at Bethlehem-Hingham Shipyard, Hingham, Massachusetts; launched 17 February 1945; and commissioned 16 March 1945. It served in the Asiatic-Pacific theater with LST Flotilla 33, LST Group 98, and LST Division 196, then performed occupation and China service in the Far East from 1-25 October 1945 and 10 November 1945-6 January 1946. It was decommissioned 23 May 1946, struck from the Naval Register 23 June 1947, and sold 17 January 1948 to Compania Naviera y Commercial Perez Compano S.A. of Buenos Aires for operation; the page gives the later fate as unknown.

- Finding
- NavSource's ship-specific specification block records 328 feet overall length, 50-foot beam, 11.6-knot trial speed, 13 officers and 104 enlisted in the complement, troop accommodations for 16 officers and 147 enlisted, and a diesel plant of two General Motors 12-567A engines, single Falk reduction gears, three diesel-drive 100-kW generators, two propellers, and 1,700 shaft horsepower.

- Limitations
- The specification block identifies machinery but does not state insulation or asbestos content. The absence of boilers is a description of the listed diesel propulsion plant, not proof that no asbestos-containing material existed elsewhere aboard.

[3]U.S. General Accounting Office, Navy Efforts To Protect Workers From Asbestos Exposure, HRD-80-2 (18 October 1979), program-level Navy asbestos context; ship-specific diesel machinery from the NavSource/DANFS specification block [gao]
- Locator
- GAO HRD-80-2 product page; NavSource/DANFS LST-1065 propulsion block
- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- Class/era inference for a WWII diesel LST: likely asbestos-relevant application categories include diesel exhaust or machinery lagging, gaskets and packing, accommodation or bulkhead insulation, deck coverings, and brake linings. The ship-specific specification lists diesel machinery rather than boilers or a steam plant, so a boiler/steam-lagging pathway is not carried for this hull.

- 1945 construction and service era; GAO report 1979
- Population
- WWII-era Navy shipbuilding workers and diesel-LST crews
- Limitations
- Program and design context only: neither the GAO product page nor the ship specification names an asbestos product aboard LST-1065 or establishes quantity, location, condition, individual exposure, or causation. The GAO full text was not retrieved because gao.gov blocks automated access; the product page is the accessible official record.

- PDF row for LST-1065 (page printed as 1811-1812 in extracted text)
- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- National Archives Special List #44 identifies LST-1065 Navy logbook holdings covering 16 March 1945 through 30 September 1945. This is an archival lead for operational records, not evidence about ship materials or asbestos.

- The finding aid identifies dates and existence of logbook holdings only; it does not provide the log contents and would not, by itself, establish asbestos exposure or material composition.

- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record was located in the authoritative sources reviewed: no hull asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, conservation record, or ship-specific asbestos litigation record was identified. The CourtListener hull-number opinion search for LST-1065 returned 23 results, all name collisions (unrelated criminal, civil, administrative, and asbestos cases whose text matched the token); the exact-name opinion search and both docket searches were blocked by the fleet-wide pacing limiter before requests could be sent.

- Limitations
- A bounded negative search is not proof that asbestos was absent. The completed hull-number opinion result was reviewed and classified as name collisions; because pacing prevented the exact-name opinion and both docket requests, no complete litigation conclusion is drawn. Class/era inference keeps asbestos presence plausible but unproven aboard this hull.
