Documented for this hull: 'LST-1103 was laid down on 28 November 1944 at Evansville, Ind., by the Missouri Valley Bridge & Iron Co.; launched on 13 January 1945; sponsored by Mrs. E. S. Paschall; and commissioned on 31 January 1945, Lt. Comdr. R. D. Foster, USNR, in command. Following World War II, LST-1103 performed occupation duty in the Far East until early March 1946. She was decommissioned on 18 June 1946 and struck from the Navy list on 23 June 1947. On 17 June 1948, the ship was sold to the Oil Transport Co., New Orleans, La., for non-self-propelled operation.'

NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - its dates here track DANFS exactly and are corroborated by the BuShips Ships' Data 1945 roster row (ev-03), except that NavSource and DANFS give 31 January 1945 for commissioning where the SDB roster prints 26 January 1945 (see gaps). Contains no asbestos content. No hull photographs located anywhere in the sources searched.

The official BuShips roster lists this hull by number: 'LST1103' - builder Missouri Valley B. & I. Co., Evansville, Ind. (ditto chain under that yard); keel laid 28 Nov 44; ship launched 13 Jan 45; date of first commission 26 Jan 45. The LST1081-1152 design-block row covering this hull gives: 328 ft oa, 50 ft beam, 2,366 t light / 4,080 t trial, 11.6 kt, 2 x G.M. Diesel 12-567A engines at 1,700 shaft horsepower, Falk reduction gearing, 3 x 100 kW 230 V D.C. ship's-service generators, diesel fuel capacity 4,320 bbls. The same table confirms a diesel plant with no boilers.

NPS documentation of this hull's building yard: the Navy built Evansville Shipyard on 40 acres of land on the city's west side; within four months of the February 1942 announcement the Missouri Valley Bridge and Iron Company began production of landing ship tanks (LSTs). By February 1945 the yard had produced 167 LSTs, with workers producing 'one ship every four days in 1944' plus 13 ammunition lighters and 17 oceangoing barges - making Evansville 'the world's largest inland producer of ocean-going ships.' The last ship was launched 12 December 1945; a January 1946 fire destroyed the yard. The city commemorates this history at the USS LST-325 museum (NRHP-listed 24 June 2009). This hull was on the ways at this yard from 28 November 1944 through its 13 January 1945 launch - inside the documented peak-production window.

    Finding
A tank landing ship built November 1944 - January 1945 at a Navy-contracted yard sits inside the documented WWII shipbuilding asbestos era. The propulsion plant was diesel (2 x GM 12-567A) with no boilers or steam system - the boiler/steam-line lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply. Era-standard asbestos applications aboard a landing ship of this type and period were engine and exhaust thermal insulation, machinery lagging, gaskets and valve packing, deck coverings (e.g., deck-tile compounds), and accommodation-space insulation, within the confined interior volume of a 328-foot landing ship.

Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation survey, material schedule, work package, or muster-level exposure record located for LST-1103. OTHER LITIGATION (not an asbestos case) at this hull's building yard, in the same trade and window as this hull's construction: Elbert Woolsey was employed by Missouri Valley Bridge and Iron Company 'as a pipe fitter in the compartment of ships' from 21 June to 11 November 1944 - ending seventeen days before this hull's keel was laid at the same yard. His estate alleged death (29 October 1945) resulted from 'poisoned... fumes and gases from galvanized metal being welded' and sought compensation under the Indiana Workmen's Occupational Diseases Act. The Industrial Board of Indiana found he 'was not exposed to nor did he contract an occupational disease arising out of and in the course of his employment'; the Court of Appeals affirmed the denial of compensation in banc (opinion filed 17 October 1949, Royse, J.).

    Limitations
Classified DOWN per litigation-stage discipline: this is a non-asbestos occupational-disease claim (welding fumes, galvanized metal), a yard-level employer case that does not name LST-1103 or any hull, and a merits-level denial for the claimant (Board denial affirmed). It documents that occupational-disease litigation arose from the ship-compartment trades at this hull's builder during her construction window - litigation-posture context only; it is not exposure evidence and does not establish or defeat any claim.

No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or docketed case naming USS LST-1103 / LST-1103 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CourtListener returned zero opinions for the quoted phrases 'LST-1103', 'USS LST-1103', and 'LST 1103' asbestos, and zero dockets for 'LST-1103'; an unquoted token search produced 44 hits, all numeric/statute collisions with no connection to the hull. Secondary web sweeps surfaced only law-firm marketing listicles asserting asbestos aboard LSTs generally (e.g., Indiana jobsite lists naming 'Missouri Valley Bridge & Iron' / 'Evansville Shipyard') - excluded by source policy.

Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - the hull was built inside the documented WWII shipbuilding asbestos era at a mass-production Navy yard.
