    Finding
LST-1106 was laid down 9 December 1944 at Evansville, Ind., by the Missouri Valley Bridge & Iron Co.; launched 24 January 1945; and commissioned 16 February 1945, Lt. Jack Flinn, USNR, in command. During World War II, LST-1106 was assigned to the Asiatic-Pacific theater and participated in the assault and occupation of Okinawa Gunto in June 1945. Following the war, she performed occupation duty in the Far East until late September 1945. She was decommissioned 2 August 1946 and struck from the Navy list 8 October that same year. On 13 June 1948, the ship was sold to the Walter W. Johnson Co. for scrapping. LST-1106 earned one battle star for World War II service.

NavSource identifies this as an LST-542-class tank landing ship and records: laid down 9 December 1944 at Missouri Valley Bridge & Iron Co., Evansville, IN; launched 24 January 1945; commissioned 16 February 1945; call sign NAWV; wartime assignment listed as LST Flotilla Thirty-Three, LST Group Ninety-Seven, LST Division One Hundred Ninety-Two; Okinawa Gunto operation 8 to 28 June 1945; Far East occupation service 9 to 26 September 1945; decommissioned 2 August 1946; struck 8 October 1946; sold for scrapping 13 June 1948 to Walter W. Johnson Co.; one battle star. Specifications: 328 ft o.a., 50 ft beam, 11.6 kt trial speed, 2,366 t beaching displacement, 13 officers/104 enlisted ship's company with troop accommodations of 16 officers/147 enlisted, two General Motors 12-567A 900 hp diesels, single Falk main reduction gear, three diesel-drive 100 kW ship-service generators, two propellers 1,700 shp, twin rudders. Limitations
Volunteer-compiled naval-history archive used for specifications and corroboration. It does not document asbestos aboard this hull and does not establish exposure, causation, quantity, condition, or legal eligibility. Its flotilla/group attribution conflicts with the NHHC 1 May 1945 Pacific Fleet organization table (see ev-uss-lst-1106-lst1106-03).

    Finding type
    vessel_history
    Finding
The NHHC 1 May 1945 Pacific Fleet organization table lists LST-1106 in LST Division 192 under LST Group 96 of LST Flotilla 32, alongside LSTs 873, 1039, 1085, 1122, and 1123. This conflicts with NavSource's attribution of the hull to LST Flotilla Thirty-Three / LST Group Ninety-Seven / LST Division 192. The division assignment (192) agrees across sources; the group and flotilla assignments differ and are preserved as a source discrepancy rather than harmonized.

A dated organizational table is authoritative for its snapshot date (1 May 1945); NavSource's attribution may reflect a different date or a transcription error. Either way the discrepancy does not bear on asbestos documentation - it is recorded for research accuracy. No asbestos content.

    Finding
The BuShips SD-1945 v2 table places LST-1106 in design group LST1081-1152: 328 ft o.a., 50 ft beam, 2,366 t light / 4,080 t full load, 11.6 kt, two GM Diesel 12-567A engines at 1,700 shp total; the boiler and steam-condition columns are blank for all LST groups, consistent with an all-diesel plant. Era/design inference for a diesel-powered amphibious ship built at an inland 'cornfield' yard in the peak wartime asbestos period: NO boilers or steam plant - the steam-lagging pathway does not apply; plausible asbestos applications on this type concentrate in diesel exhaust lagging, engine-room thermal/acoustic insulation, gaskets and packing throughout the engineering spaces, electrical insulation/cable, deck coverings including tank-deck surfaces, accommodation-space insulation, and brake/friction linings on winches and the stern-anchor windlass.

    Limitations
Class/era and design inference only - no hull-level material schedule, insulation spec, or survey exists in the public record for this ship, and the hull was scrapped in 1948 so no later-material history exists to weigh. Does not establish presence, absence, or quantity of ACM aboard.

    Limitations
Era-level scholarship only; the source does not name this hull, class, or yard and does not establish that any specific material aboard this ship contained asbestos. The diesel plant (no boilers) narrows the exposure-relevant scope relative to steam vessels. The National Archives identifies the records pathway for hull-level asbestos research: RG 19 (Bureau of Ships) general/confidential/secret correspondence filed by hull designation (here 'LST1106'), class correspondence under the namesake hull ('LST542 Class'), type correspondence ('LST'), and private-builder contract correspondence under the QM filing code ('QM/Missouri Valley Bridge & Iron'); and, in the Cartographic Branch, ship engineering drawings in the 19-Hull paper series and 19-Micro microfilm series arranged by hull number and Ship Material Group, with S39 (Insulation and Lagging) and S48 (Piping) among the most frequently reviewed codes. The guide expressly warns that locating these series is not itself direct evidence of asbestos.

GAO reviewed the Navy's efforts to protect workers from asbestos exposure at the Long Beach and Norfolk Naval Shipyards, including the use of asbestos in Navy ships, the cost of removing asbestos from Navy ships, and compensation programs. The Navy's 1975 policy was to remove and replace with nonasbestos materials only insulation that was damaged or had to be removed to accomplish repairs; the policy was modified in 1979 to selectively replace asbestos insulation in high-maintenance areas.

VA adjudication guidance states that during World War II 'several million people employed in U.S. shipyards and U.S. Navy Veterans were exposed to chrysotile products as well as amosite and crocidolite since these varieties were used extensively in military ship construction,' and directs raters to assess exposure probability by Navy occupational specialty rather than by a ship-by-ship asbestos census.

    Limitations

Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - the hull was a 1944-45 Navy landing ship built in the peak asbestos shipbuilding period, and class/era possibility is not converted into a ship-specific finding. CourtListener opinion coverage is a clean negative (quoted phrase count 0); the docket (type=r) sweep and exact-name searches hit the fleet pacing stand-down - RECAP docket coverage remains an access gap, not an exhaustive no-result.
