Documented for this hull: 'LST-1109 was laid down on 21 December 1944 at Evansville, Ind., by the Missouri Valley Bridge & Iron Co.; launched on 6 February 1945; sponsored by Mrs. Paul H. Derrick; and commissioned on 28 February 1945, Lt. William A. McCaskill, USNR, in command. Following World War II, LST-1109 performed occupation duty in the Far East until early November 1945. She was decommissioned on 6 May 1946 and struck from the Navy list on 19 June that same year. On 13 June 1948, the ship was sold to the Walter W. Johnson Co. for scrapping.' The entry carries no operation narrative - DANFS records no combat operations or battle stars for this hull.

    Limitations
Ship-specific history only; contains no asbestos or material content. The DANFS entry is short-form (typical for number-only LSTs) and does not identify where occupation duty was performed, where the ship decommissioned, or where scrapping occurred. Finding
The yard's construction table lists this hull as yard hull no. 166 (LST, pennant 1109, FY 1944): keel laid 12/21/44, launched 2/6/45, delivered 2/28/45 - 47 days on the ways, 22 days fitting out, 69 days total - with disposition 'Scrapped 1947'. The yard was built for the war effort on the Ohio River at Evansville and closed after the war; the plant was destroyed by fire in 1946. The same source records 171 LSTs built at Evansville (the Indiana Historical Society/Kellar collection and Clark's 'A Cornfield Shipyard' record 167 LSTs of 202 total vessels - count discrepancy carried in gaps).

    Finding
A diesel-driven LST-542-series tank landing ship built Dec 1944-Feb 1945 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era (GAO HRD-80-2: substitution did not begin until the early 1970s). The GM 12-567A diesel plant removes the boiler and steam-line lagging pathway of steam vessels; era-standard applications aboard a vessel of this type and period concentrate in diesel-exhaust and engine-room lagging, machinery gaskets and valve packing, deck coverings, accommodation insulation and bulkhead board, and winch/windlass brake linings. The 69-day construction cycle and wartime schedules are consistent with standardized, centrally procured outfit materials across the LST program.

    Finding
The only occupational-disease litigation located for this hull's builder yard: the Indiana Court of Appeals affirmed the Industrial Board's denial of a Workmen's Occupational Diseases Act claim by the estate of Elbert Woolsey, a pipe fitter employed by Missouri Valley Bridge & Iron 'in the compartment of ships' from 21 June to 11 November 1944 - the same yard and the same production window in which this hull's construction block began (keel 21 Dec 1944). The claim alleged death by poisoning from inhaled galvanized-metal welding fumes - NOT asbestos. The Board found the decedent 'was not exposed to nor did he contract an occupational disease' in the employment; the court affirmed under the substantial-evidence rule. A companion case, Missouri Valley Bridge & Iron Co. v. Alsip, 63 N.E.2d 297, 116 Ind. App. 259 (Ind. Ct. App. 1945), is an accidental-injury award dispute (autopsy jurisdiction), likewise non-asbestos.

Classified DOWN to context_only by design: this is a yard-level, non-asbestos occupational-disease decision that does not name this hull and does not concern asbestos - included because it is the only litigation located tied to the builder and documents the contemporaneous claims pathway (state industrial-board compensation, not tort). It is not exposure evidence and must not be counted as qualifying asbestos litigation. CourtListener lookup of the opinion URL remains open.

    Finding
Archival leads for this hull: (1) a Vallejo Naval & Historical Museum-held photograph (via NavSource, contributor Darryl Baker) shows USS LST-1109 entering San Francisco Bay circa 1946 with LCT(6)-1273 as deck cargo - documentary evidence of the hull's post-occupation return to the Pacific coast. (2) The Indiana Historical Society holds the Kellar manuscript collection (SC 0967) documenting the Evansville yard - which per the finding aid 'became the largest wartime employer in Evansville and, at its peak in 1944, employed over 19,000 individuals,' constructing 202 vessels, 167 of them LSTs - the builder-yard labor context for this hull's construction. (3) WWII deck logs for this hull would be held in NARA RG 24 (Bureau of Naval Personnel deck-log series); the catalog is JS-rendered and per-hull retrieval was not completed this session.

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or litigation naming USS LST-1109 was found in the public sources searched. CourtListener API v4 (authenticated, fleet-paced) returned 0 opinion hits and 0 docket hits for the hull-number query 'LST-1109' on 2026-10-02; the exact-name variant 'USS LST-1109' is a phrase subset of that zero-count query and adds no hits. Secondary web sweeps surfaced no qualifying case or record; the only 'asbestos aboard' material located for LST-type hulls generally is law-firm marketing listicle content asserting asbestos without primary sourcing - excluded by source policy. Builder-yard litigation located is non-asbestos (Woolsey; Alsip) - see ev-06.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - the hull was built and scrapped (1947-48) entirely inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era, and 1948 shipbreaking predates ACM-handling regulation. Deck logs, MVB&I work packages, and any scrapping-contract records are undigitized leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
