Official DANFS entry for this hull: 'LST-117 was laid down on 28 April 1943 at Jeffersonville, Ind., by the Jeffersonville Boat & Machine Co.; launched on 10 July 1943; sponsored by Mrs. Robert B. Sutherland; and commissioned on 27 August 1943.' WWII assignment to the Asiatic-Pacific theater with operations: Marianas operation - capture and occupation of Guam, July 1944; Leyte landings, October 1944. Post-war: 'redesignated LSTH-117 on 15 September 1945,' occupation duty in the Far East until mid-February 1946; 'decommissioned on 16 February 1946; redesignated LST-117 on 6 March 1952; and transferred to MSTS for service as USNS LST-117 (T-LST-117) on 31 March 1952. She was struck from the Navy list on 10 June 1973. LST-117 earned two battle stars for World War II service.'

    Limitations
NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry; its milestone dates corroborate DANFS where they overlap. The SCAJAP/Q063 loan and the 1973 Singapore transfer rest on NavSource alone among English-language sources (Q063 corroborated by Japanese compilation uswarships.jounin.jp, which however dates the SCAJAP period to the 1945-46 occupation window - conflict in gaps). 'Transferred to the Republic of Singapore' and 'sold 1976' (navalmarinearchive.com) are unverified secondary claims; no official record of final disposition located. No asbestos content.

    vessel_history
    Finding
The ship's own action report documents this hull under air attack while en route from Kwajalein, Marshall Islands, 'to perform a mission according to operation plan...CTF 53,' in company with convoy Tractor Group THREE and screen vessels, CTG 53.16 (CAPT. G. B. Carter, USN) in command: on 17 June 1944 at 13 deg 17' N, 148 deg 05' E, three enemy torpedo planes attacked. One plane 'making approach for the head of the convoy and directly for LST 117' released a torpedo at about fifty feet altitude, about 700 yards away, three points off the starboard bow; the torpedo 'pass[ed] clear of all ships ahead of the convoy,' and the attacking plane, hit by LST and escort fire, landed on the water about six miles ahead of the convoy. Enclosure (A) is the ship's completed Anti-Aircraft Action by Surface Ships form.

Combat/vessel-history document - contains no asbestos or material content. Scanned typescript OCR'd for this record; the scan is of a NARA-declassified original (declass stamp 2012) hosted on NavSource - the Naval Source copy is a mirror of the archival document, and the underlying original sits in the WWII action-report records (RG 38) at NARA. Ship name and serial legible; minor OCR uncertainty in fine numerical fields, none material to the documented event.

    Finding
The Flotilla Five war diary names this hull repeatedly during the Guam operation: the flotilla roster lists 'LST 117 - Lt. S. Pras, USN' under 'LST GROUP FORTY / LST DIVISION 79.' Entries record LSTs including 117 transferring ammunition to destroyers (22 July); 'The LST 117 unloaded all of her mobile equipment on the LCT 982 for movement to the beaches' (entries of ~22-24 July); 'the following LST's were beached - LST's 117, 123, 70, 125...' in the early hours of 24 July; unloading progress logged at 60% on 25 July; the 26 July entries record 'LST's 117 and 123 sent medical parties to beaches to assist in caring for the wounded,' LSTs being used as casualty dressing stations off Asan Beach; LSTs 117 and 118 delivered 8-inch ammunition to combatant ships; and LST-117 joined the evening retirement formation on 25 July. Documents direct participation in the 21-28 July 1944 Guam operation credited by DANFS.

LST-117 crew; embarked Army troops/casualties handled; beach medical parties (July 1944)
    Limitations
Operational history only - no asbestos or material content. The diary is a unit-level document: it records the hull's movements and tasking, not conditions aboard this specific ship beyond the quoted entries. Dates inferred from the diary's running day-headers in OCR of a scanned SECRET-era typescript (day-level confidence; exact-hour entries transcribed conservatively). Roster header OCR'd as 'LST GROUP FORTY / LST DIVISION 79' - consistent with the division~2x-group numbering convention, while NavSource's assignment line pairs Division 79 with 'Group Fifteen'; ambiguity noted, both transcribed as found. A second NavSource-hosted diary ('LST Flotilla Five War Diary May 1944', 111 pp., scanned) is an unexamined archival lead covering the marshaling period.

    Finding
Archival leads: NARA photo IDs and the NHHC photograph establish documented physical presence of this hull at named wartime locations (Solomons Feb 1944; Leyte beaches 21 Oct 1944) and in postwar MSTS service (Wellington NZ, early 1970s). The RG 24 deck-log series (NAID 594258) is the repository for this hull's WWII deck logs; NARA also holds the underlying action-report and war-diary originals (RG 38) mirrored by the NavSource scans.

Era/design inference for this diesel-powered LST-1-class hull built April-August 1943: the plant is two GM 12-567A diesels on two shafts with diesel-driven ship's-service generators - no boilers, so the steam-plant lagging pathway does not apply. Era-standard asbestos-relevant applications aboard a 1943 landing ship of this type were diesel exhaust lagging and gaskets, engine-room thermal and acoustic insulation, deck coverings and tile, bulkhead/accommodation insulation, valve and flange gaskets, machinery packing, and winch/windlass brake linings; her September 1945 LST(H) hospital conversion implies interior rework (medical spaces, accommodation alterations) of undocumented material scope.

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, museum documentation, or qualifying litigation naming USS LST-117 / LST(H)-117 / T-LST-117 / Q063 was found in the public sources searched. CourtListener opinion search ('LST-117' OR 'LST 117') returned zero hits; the RECAP docket search was attempted under the fleet-wide rate limiter (status recorded per-query in search_ledger). Unlike better-known hulls, this hull attracts no law-firm 'asbestos aboard' marketing content at all - the secondary sweep found none. The only CourtListener document-level LST hit known to this project (Gitto v. A.W. Chesterton, S.D.N.Y. 1:07-cv-04771, found by the class-profile sweep) is a scanned reunion-notice compilation naming other hulls - incidental, and it does not name LST-117.

Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - era construction makes asbestos use plausible, and the hull's post-U.S. disposition is unresolved. Deck logs, the LST(H) conversion work package, MSTS maintenance records, and any Singapore-side disposal record are undigitized leads. Finding
DISPUTED, unresolved: the post-striking fate of this hull rests on conflicting secondary compilations. NavSource reports a 1973 transfer to the Republic of Singapore with fate unknown; a second compilation reports 'sold 1976'; the Japanese compilation confirms the Q063 SCAJAP number but dates the loan to the 1945-46 occupation window, not post-1952. DANFS ends at the 10 June 1973 striking. No Republic of Singapore Navy LST pennant list located that maps this hull to a named RSN unit (the RSN's known ex-U.S. WWII LSTs are accounted to other hulls), so the Singapore-transfer claim is unverified.
