- Documented for this hull (verbatim from the entry): 'LST-124 was laid down on 7 June 1943 at Evansville, Ind., by the Missouri Valley Bridge & Iron Co.; launched on 18 August 1943; sponsored by Mrs. Hunt Greathouse; and commissioned on 24 September 1943, Ens. William A. Bartos in command.' Assigned to the Asiatic-Pacific theater; participated in the Marianas operation (capture and occupation of Saipan, June and July 1944; Tinian capture and occupation, 'June 1944' per DANFS) and the Okinawa Gunto operation (assault and occupation of Okinawa Gunto, May and June 1945). 'Upon her return to the United States, the ship was decommissioned on 26 July 1946 and struck from the Navy list on 28 August 1946. On 13 December 1947, she was sold to the Kaiser Co., Inc., of Seattle, Wash., and subsequently scrapped. LST-124 earned three battle stars for World War II service.'

- Finding
- The official BuShips 1945 design table places this hull in design group LST1-490: 328 ft o.a., 50 ft beam, 2,366 t light / 4,080 t trial displacement, 11.6 kt; machinery - 2 x G.M. Diesel model 12-567A, 1,700 shp, Falk main reduction gears, twin screws; ship's service generators 3 x 100 kW 230 V D.C. diesel-drive; armament 2 twin + 4 single 40 mm, 12 x 20 mm. - Finding
- A diesel-powered amphibious ship built June-September 1943 inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era would have carried the era-standard insulation applications for the type: engine and diesel-exhaust lagging, machinery insulation, gaskets and valve packing on piping and machinery, electrical/armor cable insulation, accommodation and compartment insulation, and deck coverings. With no steam plant (no boilers, no steam turbines), the boiler-lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply; asbestos relevance concentrates in engine-room/exhaust lagging and general shipboard insulation of the period.

[7]NPS National Register nomination, USS LST-325 (NRHP 09000434, listed 2009-06-24), Evansville, IN - sister LST-1-class hull retaining original fabric (nomination PDF via NPGallery GetAsset) [nps]

- Finding type

- Finding
- The federal registration file for sister hull USS LST-325 (same design group, built Philadelphia Navy Yard 1942-43, preserved at Evansville) records that the ship 'retains its original hull, engines, operating systems and even armament,' with restoration performed to WWII specifications using 'same kind materials and workmanship' - including armor cable salvaged from period barges. This documents both that original-era fabric survives in the class and that the NRHP nomination's materials entry reads simply 'METAL: steel' - the federal registration process produced no asbestos inventory for a sister hull.

- Finding
- A wartime occupational-disease claim arose from compartment work at this hull's builder: appellants' decedent Elbert Woolsey was employed by Missouri Valley Bridge & Iron Co. as a pipe fitter 'in the compartment of ships' 21 June - 11 November 1944, and died 29 October 1945; the family alleged he was poisoned by inhaling fumes and gases from galvanized metal being welded. The Industrial Board of Indiana (two members dissenting) found the decedent was not exposed to and did not contract an occupational disease in his employment, and the award denying compensation was affirmed on appeal. Documents that occupational-disease litigation arose from wartime ship-compartment work at the yard that built this hull.

[9]Indiana Historical Society, collection finding aid: James H. - Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- The builder's archival record: the Navy selected Evansville, Indiana, as the site for a new inland shipyard in January 1942; the yard became the largest wartime employer in Evansville, peaking above 19,000 workers in 1944, and produced 202 vessels - 167 of them LSTs - before ceasing production in late summer 1945 (plant destroyed by fire 1946). The Naval Marine Archive build table lists this hull: keel 6/7/43, launched 8/18/43, delivered 9/24/43 - 72 days on the ways, 37 days in the water, 99 days total - disposition 'Scrapped 1947.' The IHS collection (368-page Kellar manuscript, 1998) is the principal archival lead for yard-level records.

- Yard-level documentation, not a hull record. The 167-LST count (IHS finding aid) vs 171-LST count (Naval Marine Archive introduction/Wikipedia company entry) is unresolved - differing counts of LSTs vs. all craft. The finding aid is a collection description, not the manuscript itself; no asbestos content located in the finding aid. Naval Marine Archive is a secondary compiled table - consistent with DANFS/NavSource dates for this hull.

- Finding type

- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or court proceeding naming LST-124 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CourtListener opinion search for "LST-124" returned zero hits; the docket search returned two hits that are name collisions on inspection (American General Life Insurance Co. v. Sherlock, D.S.C. 1:03-cv-03722, insurance declaratory judgment; Matlock v. Brown, N.D. Cal. 5:08-cv-00745, habeas petition - neither concerns the vessel). Space-variant CourtListener queries ("LST 124", "USS LST-124") could not be completed this session - fleet pacing budget intermittently exhausted - and are logged as blocked, not negative results.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - era inference remains reasonable but unproven for this hull. The litigation sweep is partially open: the hyphenated hull number was searched to completion (opinions: no result; dockets: two name collisions), while space/name variants are blocked this session - a narrower residual gap than an unsearched repository. Deck logs (NARA RG 24), MVB&I yard records (IHS Kellar collection), and the Flotilla Five war diaries remain undigitized leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
