- Documented for this hull: laid down 24 July 1942 at Evansville, Ind., by the Missouri Valley Bridge & Iron Co.; launched 3 February 1943; sponsored by Miss Marian Shapiro; commissioned 15 March 1943. 'The tank landing ship never saw active service with the United States Navy.' Decommissioned 22 March 1943 and transferred to the United Kingdom. Returned to United States Navy custody 1 February 1946; struck from the Navy list 19 June 1946; sold to Luria Brothers and Co., Inc., of Philadelphia, Pa., on 9 October 1947 for scrapping.

- Limitations
- Ship-specific history only; DANFS contains no asbestos or material content. USN service was nominal - the hull was decommissioned 7 days after commissioning and spent her operating life under the Royal Navy, so US-side crew exposure window was days, not years.

Its 'Transferred to US Naval custody, 1 February 1945, at Greenock' line conflicts with DANFS and uboat.net (1 February 1946) - 1945 is a transcription slip (the RN commanding officer's tour runs to 1 Feb 1946); DANFS date carried. - Finding
- CORRECTION of NavSource's return-date typo: the uboat.net command table for HMS LST 162 lists R E J Fox, RNR (Jun 1943 - 2 Mar 1945) succeeded by Wilfrid Antoine William Catinus, RNR (2 Mar 1945 - 1 Feb 1946), and states the ship was 'Returned to the USN on 1 February 1946.' An RN officer still in command through 1 February 1946 is incompatible with a February 1945 return - corroborating DANFS (1 February 1946) against NavSource's '1 February 1945.'

- Builder documentation: 'In February 1942, the Department of Navy constructed the Missouri Valley Bridge & Iron Co. Shipyard, also called the Evansville Shipyard. Placed along the Ohio River, the forty-acre plant built 300 feet by 50 feet wide landing ship tanks (LST). Shift workers maintained rapid production throughout the war, resulting in one ship every four days in 1944 and a total of 167 LSTs produced by February 1945.' The yard's output 'made the Evansville Shipyard the largest inland producer of oceangoing ships.'

- Finding
- Yard build table names this hull: pennant 162, FY1942, keel laid 7/24/42, launched 2/3/43, delivered 3/15/43 (194 days on ways, 40 in water, 234 total), disposition 'To Britain 1943, sold private 1947' - an independent compilation matching DANFS milestone dates. Yard history: the Evansville shipyard on the Ohio River was built for the war effort and closed after the war; the plant was destroyed by fire in 1946 and the ways remain visible at low water; MVB&I built 171 LSTs at Evansville and also produced LCTs, lighters and seaplane derricks at Leavenworth, KS.

- Finding
- An LST-1-class diesel tank landing ship built 1942-43 sits inside the documented WWII shipbuilding asbestos-use era. The propulsion plant is diesel (2 x GM 12-567A) with diesel-driven generators - no boilers and no steam distribution - so the boiler/turbine lagging pathway does not apply. Era-consistent asbestos-relevant applications aboard a diesel amphibious hull of this period: diesel engine and exhaust lagging, machinery-space thermal/acoustic insulation, gaskets and valve packing, deck coverings and tile, bulkhead and accommodation insulation, electrical/cable insulation, and winch brake linings. The 1945 Belfast refit for Far East service is an additional era-typical insulation-disturbance event, yard unidentified.

- Limitations
- Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation survey, material list, work package, or refit specification located for LST-162. - Finding type

- Finding
- Program-level documentation of the LST construction effort this hull belonged to: 'Production of LSTs took place in established naval yards and five (5) inland facilities, which produced 670 of the total number of 1,051 LSTs built during WWII. These sites were in Seneca, Illinois; Evansville, Indiana; Jeffersonville, Indiana; Ambridge, Pennsylvania; and Neville Island, Pennsylvania. The Evansville facility built the most LSTs, 167.' Nomination also documents surviving sister LST-325's post-2000 maintenance history (engine/generator repairs, rewiring, sandblasting and painting, hull repairs and thickness tests, radio-room restoration) - which contains no asbestos or abatement statement.

- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, museum disclosure (not applicable - hull scrapped), or docketed case naming USS LST-162 / HM LST-162 was found in the public sources searched. CourtListener: opinion index returned zero hits for 'LST-162', 'USS LST-162', and 'LST 162' asbestos; docket index returned zero hits for 'LST-162' (all 2026-10-02, authenticated API v4). Secondary web sweeps surfaced only law-firm marketing listicles naming the Evansville yard among WWII shipyards - excluded by source policy; no qualifying case surfaced.

- Archival leads (not retrieved - requires research-room or reproduction order; no spend authorized): NARA RG 19 (Records of the Bureau of Ships) holds contract/construction records that may cover MVB&I hulls incl. outfitting specifications; RG 24 deck logs for the 7-day USN commissioning window are marginal. The substantive service record is British: The National Archives (UK) ADM series holds RN ship's logs and reports of proceedings for HM LST-162 (1943-46), including the 1945 Belfast refit; the unidentified Belfast refit yard's own records and Luria Brothers' post-sale breakup records are additional untapped leads.
