- Finding
- The official USCG wartime history documents the loss of this hull: the Coast Guard-manned LST-167 departed Guadalcanal in convoy 24 September 1943 and beached at Ruravai, Vella LaVella - a beach not previously used by LSTs, without shore defenses - at 0745 on 25 September; all of the 77th Marine Combat Battalion's equipment was unloaded by 1115. At about 1116-1117 three dive bombers attacked out of the sun; two bombs struck the ship (main deck port side; main deck forward into the provision room) and a third was a near miss, starting a fire on the tank deck in unloaded gasoline and oil. Abandon ship was ordered; 40mm ammunition began exploding about 1140. On the 26th the ship was still burning; casualties per this source: 2 officers and 5 enlisted men killed in action, 3 enlisted men died of wounds, 5 enlisted men missing in action, 1 officer and 19 enlisted men wounded. The ship was unbeached and towed to Rendova.

- The official 1945 design table for the LST1-490 group (which includes LST-167) records: length 328 ft overall / 316 ft waterline, beam 50 ft, beaching displacement 2,366 tons, trial displacement 3,960 tons (full-load displacement 4,080 tons), designed speed 11.6 knots, 2 propellers driven by General Motors 12-567A diesel engines at 1,700 shaft horsepower, accommodations for 13 officers and 106 enlisted, armament 2 twin + 4 single 40mm AA mounts. The boiler/steam-condition columns are blank for this design group - a diesel plant with no boilers.

[9]Class-era design inference grounded in BuShips Ships' Data 1945 v2 LST design table (diesel plant, no boilers) and general WWII-era naval shipbuilding practice; see search_ledger [other_primary]
- Locator
- SDB 1945 v2 LST design table (propulsion); GAO HRD-80-2 (program era)
- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- LST-167 was a wartime diesel-powered landing ship built in 1942-43 - inside the era when the Navy used asbestos insulation extensively in ship construction (GAO HRD-80-2 program-level finding). Because the LST-1-class plant was diesel with no boilers, the boiler/steam-lagging pathway does not apply; the era-typical asbestos applications for a vessel of this type and period would have been engine and exhaust thermal insulation/lagging, machinery gaskets and valve packing, electrical insulation, deck coverings, and accommodation-space insulation and fireproofing. Construction workers at the Evansville yard (Missouri Valley Bridge & Iron, ~17,000 wartime employees) and the ship's Coast Guard crew are the plausible exposure populations.

- Limitations
- Era/design inference only - no ship-specific asbestos survey, material schedule, or product identification was located for this hull; does not establish that asbestos-containing material was installed aboard LST-167, nor quantity, nor any individual's exposure. The hull was destroyed after ~5 months of service, foreclosing postwar survey channels.

- GAO HRD-80-2 product page
- Finding type
- gov_survey
- Finding
- GAO documented at program level that the Navy used asbestos insulation extensively aboard ships and did not begin substituting alternative materials until the early 1970s - placing this hull's 1942-43 construction and brief 1943 service squarely inside the Navy asbestos era.

- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, museum documentation, or qualifying litigation naming LST-167 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). The hull was destroyed in action 25 September 1943 after approximately five months of commissioned service and stricken 6 December 1943 - there is no postwar career, reserve-fleet period, or museum phase in which a modern survey would have been generated.
