    Finding
NARA's Special List No. 44 lists USS LST-174 logbook coverage from 15 June 1943 through 21 December 1945. The index supports the commissioned-service endpoints, not construction details, material content, work performed, or exposure.

    Population
USS LST-174 crew during commissioned service
    Limitations
This is an archival index, not the underlying logbooks. It does not establish construction facts beyond the service dates, asbestos content, maintenance activity, individual exposure, or causation.

    vessel_history
    Finding
NavSource's vessel page reports that LST-174 was laid down 1 January 1943 at Missouri Valley Bridge and Iron Co., Evansville, Indiana; launched 21 April 1943; commissioned 15 June 1943; decommissioned 21 December 1945; struck 21 January 1946; and sold 30 January 1947 to Ming-Sung Industrial Co., Ltd. of Shanghai for merchant conversion. It reports a final fate unknown, two General Motors 12-567A diesel engines, and a complement of 13 officers and 104 enlisted personnel.

    Population
    Construction trades (Evansville, 1943); ship's company (1943-1945)
    Limitations
NavSource is an archival photo/history compilation, not an official registry. Its commission and decommission dates agree with NARA's logbook index; construction, disposition, machinery, and complement details were not independently verified here. This source contains no asbestos information and establishes no exposure.

    Finding type
    asbestos_application
    Finding
A 1979 Department of the Navy response reproduced in GAO HRD-80-2 states that thermal insulation for machinery, equipment, and piping systems had been the major asbestos application aboard Navy ships. The response also describes asbestos uses in shipboard electrical equipment, deck materials, piping-system gaskets and packing, and equipment brakes and clutches.

1979 report; source discusses historical shipboard applications
    Population
Navy shipbuilding, repair, and shipboard populations (Navy-wide context)
    Limitations
Navy-wide materials context only. The report does not name USS LST-174, the LST-1 class, Missouri Valley Bridge and Iron Co., or any 1943 construction specification, and does not prove that any listed product was installed aboard this hull. It establishes neither individual exposure nor causation.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
No qualifying public ship-specific asbestos survey, material list, abatement record, environmental record, or documented maintenance record for USS LST-174 was located in the official repositories and live archival sources searched.

    public-source search through 2026-10-02
    Limitations
A negative public-record search is not proof that asbestos was absent aboard the vessel, that no exposure occurred, or that a claim lacks legal merit. Some authoritative materials were blocked or unavailable, and CourtListener could not be completed because the fleet-wide pacing limiter had no request capacity.

  6. [6]CourtListener authenticated helper, cl-auth-search.py, exact query "USS LST-174", opinion search [other_primary]
    Locator
BATCH-6733-REPORT.md, CourtListener sweep section; authenticated-helper diagnostic recorded at research time
    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
The required authenticated CourtListener sweep for the exact vessel name and exact hull number could not be completed. The helper was used for the exact-name opinion search, but its fleet-wide pacing limiter reported that the request budget was momentarily spent and directed no retry loop. No CourtListener result is classified as a no-result, litigation hit, or name collision.

    Limitations
This is an access-gap record, not a negative litigation finding. The exact hull-number search and docket searches were not sent after the helper instructed the session not to retry into the fleet limiter; therefore no inference about litigation, exposure, pleadings, discovery, trial findings, or judgments is permitted.
