NHHC DANFS entry text returned by official-source search; canonical URL https://www.history.navy.mil/research/histories/ship-histories/danfs/l/lst-177.html returned HTTP 404 when checked directly
    Finding type
    vessel_history
    Finding
The NHHC DANFS entry indexed under LST-177 reports that the ship was laid down on 5 February 1943 at Evansville, Indiana, by Missouri Valley Bridge & Iron Co.; launched on 16 May 1943; sponsored by Mrs. James Gibson; and commissioned on 22 June 1943. It reports European-theater service, participation in the movement of UGS-36 in April 1944 and the invasion of southern France in August and September 1944, decommissioning on 11 February 1946, striking on 12 April 1946, transfer to France as a sale on 13 March 1947, and French Navy service as Laita (L-9001) through decommissioning in January 1962 and conversion to a port depot ship. DANFS also credits two World War II battle stars.

    Limitations
NHHC's search index exposed the official entry text, but the canonical page could not be retrieved live (HTTP 404; browser open timed out). Citation URL is null because no live or archived copy was verified. Claims are retained provisionally with this explicit access limitation; dates and later French service are not independently corroborated here. No asbestos information is present in the indexed DANFS text.

    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
NARA Special List 44, by ship number, lists LST-177 deck-log coverage from 22 June 1943 through 30 June 1945. This identifies an archival series and coverage dates; the logs themselves were not retrieved or reviewed for this record.

    Population
    LST-177 crew
    Limitations
The list establishes recorded deck-log date coverage only. It does not establish asbestos materials or exposure, and the underlying logs were not reviewed. It cannot verify the later 1945–46 history or a crew complement.

World War II discussion: increased U.S. Navy asbestos use for insulation purposes for pipes in naval vessels
    Finding type
    asbestos_application
    Finding
NIOSH's historical overview states that U.S. Navy use of asbestos for pipe insulation increased during World War II. LST-177 was built and served during that period, so this is era context only; it does not establish pipe insulation or asbestos aboard this hull.

    Limitations
General U.S. Navy era context, not a class specification, shipyard record, or LST-177 material record. Does not establish a product aboard this hull, presence or absence, quantity, condition, individual exposure, or causation.

  5. [5]CourtListener API v4 via authenticated fleet helper; incomplete sweep [court_record]
    Locator
    search_ledger rows sl-uss-lst-177-lst177-05 and -06
    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
The authenticated CourtListener exact-name docket query for “USS LST-177” returned zero results. The hull-number opinion query “LST-177” returned 192 broadly matched opinions, a noisy numeral search not fully screened or treated as vessel matches. Exact-name opinion searches and the hull-number docket search were interrupted by the fleet pacing limiter. No result has been classified as a ship-specific exposure allegation or finding.

    Limitations
Search incomplete. The exact-name docket query returned zero results, but this does not rule out opinions, alternate captions, or cases indexed differently. The 192-result hull-number opinion search is broad and unscreened; exact-name opinions and hull-number dockets remain blocked by the fleet pacing limiter. No identified case is available for litigation-stage classification.

    search_ledger rows sl-uss-lst-177-lst177-01 through -04
    Finding type
    historical_record
    Finding
No ship-specific asbestos survey, material schedule, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or other primary record documenting asbestos aboard LST-177 was located in the sources reviewed. Asbestos presence aboard this vessel is unknown.

    Limitations
A limited public-source search is not proof that asbestos was absent. Firecrawl was unavailable due to exhausted keyless quota; NHHC canonical DANFS URL returned 404; CourtListener research was interrupted by the fleet limiter; NARA logs were identified but not reviewed. No statement about asbestos presence, absence, exposure, or causation can be made from this negative search.
