Campaign table matches DANFS (Makin and Tarawa Island landings 28 Nov-8 Dec 1943; Saipan 15 Jun 1944; Tinian 24-28 Jul 1944; southern Palau Islands 6 Sep-14 Oct 1944). - Finding
- Two official .mil sources corroborate the hull's Coast Guard manning and wartime assignment: the USCG Historian's Office asset index lists LST-19 in its 'LST (LANDING SHIP, TANK; World War II)' roster of Coast Guard-manned LSTs, and NHHC's Pacific Fleet organization document of 1 May 1945 lists LST-19 under LST Flotilla Thirteen / LST Group 37 / LST Division 73 commanded by Lt. H. K. Heath (USCGR) - matching the NavSource CO table and the December 1944-January 1945 war-diary signature blocks.

- The August 1943 war diary (partially OCR-read this session; the daily operational-remarks pages are handwritten and partially legible) documents the Aleutians/Kiska operation that DANFS omits: moored to the Army Pontoon Dock at Sweeper's Cove, Adak, in early August 1943; anchored off Witchcraft Point, Kiska Island, operating with Task Force 16-10; boats running beaching operations. A NavSource photo caption citing this diary (Time/Life photo by Dmitri Kessel) dates the ship beached in Kiska Harbor 19 August 1943 at 1429, fully unloaded of U.S. Army equipment by 1959, and in the lead position of the convoy back to Adak by 21 August - the ship had carried LCT(5)-81 on deck from San Francisco for the Kiska invasion.

Salvage commenced under Lt. Comdr. C. H. Holmes, USN, Staff Salvage Officer, Commander Western Carolines Sub-Area, assisted by Chief Warrant Bos'n Frank Williams from AN-41; troops disembarked except working details; pumps from the 73rd C.B., equipment from 33rd C.B., GroPac 9, 571 C.B., 17th Special and boat pools; towing cable from ATF-107 (USS Munsee); power cables rigged from beached LST-226; a carbon-monoxide incident from tank-deck pump/generator exhaust noted 31 December. - The January 1945 war diary (all 5 pages downloaded and OCR-read this session) documents the refloat and the major repair availability: broached since 26 December, the ship was kedged free and 'afloat and off the beach being towed by ATF 107' by 1743 on 13 January 1945; departed for Kossol Roads under tow 15 January; entered floating drydock ARD-17 at 0943 on 16 January - 'At 0946 set general quarters; possible submarine contact in the harbor. Secured from general quarters at 1032, contact negative.' Inspection disclosed 'approximately one hundred holes' in the bottom. Drydocked 17-25 January undergoing repairs 'to bottom and to main and auxiliary engines and electrical equipment which had been submerged. Repairs being made by details from ARB 2, ARL 9, the ARD 17 and ship's company. The electrical equipment was taken to the repair ships for drying. A corresponding section of the port shaft was removed from the USS COHASSET (IX398) formerly LST 129, and installed in place of our bent sections ... The electrical controllers for the main engines were replaced by a set received from LST 695.' Undocked 26 January with the 100 holes patched but electrical and machinery repairs 'only 80% completed'; moored to LST-695 for power until a ship's generator came online 29 January.

The crew memoir and a NavSource photo caption frame the drydock-entry alarm as a Japanese midget-submarine attack that forced Munsee to sever the tow; the contemporaneous diary records 'possible submarine contact ... contact negative' - carried as such.

- The June-July 1945 war diary (all 6 pages downloaded and OCR-read this session) documents the stateside conversion availability verbatim: from 8 June 1945 'undergoing repairs and alterations at the West Coast Shipbuilding and Drydock Company, San Pedro, California; under the supervision of the Assistant Industrial Manager, San Pedro,' with the ship's company 'subsisted and quartered at the Coast Guard Repair Base, San Pedro.' July entries record yard workmen aboard at Berth 55; medical and canteen stores taken aboard 5 July (consistent with the hospital fit-out the memoir describes); an acetylene-torch fire in stateroom 102 on 4 July; deperming at Berth 90; ammunition loading at Naval Ammunition Depot Seal Beach (11 July); Sperry gyro repair and degaussing; then mid-July shakedown exercises off San Diego in company with LSTs 118, 240, 426, 486, 488, 592, 608, and 126. Departed San Diego 25 July; anchored San Francisco Bay 28 July 'to remove a patient to hospital'; loaded at Parr-Richmond Terminal #4, Point San Pablo ('Workmen from Richmond shipyard aboard, lining tank deck with timbers'); moored Berth 34, Mare Island, 31 July.

The association with the casualty-evacuation conversion is by sequence and the memoir (yard availability June-July 1945; formal LST(H) redesignation 15 September 1945). Neither West Coast Shipbuilding and Drydock Co. nor the Coast Guard Repair Base is a shipyards.json entry.

Asbestos-relevant applications aboard a 1942-43 diesel landing ship of this type were the era-standard set - diesel-exhaust and machinery-space lagging, gaskets and packing, accommodation thermal insulation, deck coverings - and the documented 1945 yard events (January ARD-17 machinery/electrical rebuild; June-July West Coast Shipbuilding 'repairs and alterations' including the hospital fit-out) added construction and rework aboard this hull inside the Navy's asbestos-use era.

- Finding
- Primary archive coverage for this hull is unusually complete: digitized war-diaries file units cover July 1943 through November 1945 with only scattered monthly gaps surfaced (September 1943 diary not in top results), including consolidated entries for 12/43-3/44, 3/22/44-6/30/44, 6/1/45-7/31/45, and 9/1/45-11/30/45. The RG 24 ship muster rolls (15 May 1943-3 May 1944, 68 images) name the crew complement during the combat period. Four diary units were read in full via OCR this session (December 1944, January 1945, June-July 1945, September-November 1945); the August 1943 unit was partially read.

- Limitations
- Archival-lead row: the unread diary units (15 units covering Jul 1943-May 1945 campaigns and early 1945) and the muster rolls were not reviewed page by page and may contain additional yard/illness/repair detail; WWII deck logs proper for this hull are not in NARA's digitized deck-log program (index covers LST-515 and up); RG 181 work-package records for the West Coast Shipbuilding availability remain an open archival lead.
