    Finding
DANFS: LST-2 was laid down on 23 June 1942 at Pittsburgh, Pa., by the Dravo Corp.; launched on 19 September 1942; sponsored by Miss Nancy Jane Hughes; and commissioned on 9 February 1943. Assigned to the European theater, she participated in the North African occupation (early 1943), Sicilian occupation (July 1943), Salerno landings (September 1943), and Invasion of Normandy (June 1944). 'LST-2 was decommissioned on 11 April 1946 and was struck from the Navy list on 5 June 1946. On 5 December 1947, she was sold to Bosey, Philippines.' Four battle stars for WWII service.

Ship-specific official history; contains no asbestos or material content. The entry is abbreviated: it omits the 29 November 1944 transfer to the Royal Navy entirely, and its 'decommissioned 11 April 1946' appears to be the RN-side decommissioning documented by NavSource (US custody resumed 13 April 1946) - carried as a flagged discrepancy, not silently reconciled. Commissioning date (9 Feb 1943) conflicts with NavSource's 22 Dec 1942.

John P. Horgan, USNR, in command. Assigned Europe-Africa-Middle East Theater; campaigns dated: North African occupation (prior to July 1943), Sicilian occupation 9-15 July 1943, Salerno landings 9-21 September 1943, Invasion of Normandy 6-25 June 1944. 'Decommissioned and turned over to the Royal Navy, 29 November 1944'; commissioned into RN service same day as HM LST-2. RN service detail: trials in Scotland December 1944; at Tyne December 1944-August 1945 preparing for Far East service; sailed Southampton 17 August 1945 for Bombay via Port Said, arriving 21 September 1945; railway lines installed; trips between Madras, Singapore, Trincomalee; de-stored Changi March 1946; arrived Subic Bay 1 April 1946; returned to US naval custody 13 April 1946. Finding
uboat.net Allied Warships records corroborate the dual-service history with primary-archive citations: USS LST 2 page (ship/11165) lists built by Dravo Corp. Pittsburgh, ordered 23 January 1942, laid down 23 June 1942, launched 19 September 1942, commissioned 9 February 1943, USN end of service 28 November 1944 - 'Decommissioned on 28 November 1944 for transfer to the Royal Navy. Commissioned by the Royal Navy the next day. Returned to the USN on 13 April 1946. Sold on 5 December 1947.' HMS LST 2 page (ship/12229) lists RN commissioning 29 November 1944 and commanding officers Lt.Cdr. John Montague Lycett, DSC, RD, RNR (22 Nov 1944 - 10 Jul 1945) and Lt.Cdr. Leslie John Sharman, RNR (10 Jul 1945 - 13 Apr 1946). The USS page's wartime-events record, sourced to UK National Archives files ADM 199/728 + ADM 237/244, lists LST-2 (T/Lt. W. G. Newhard, USN) among twelve USN LSTs joining convoy MKS 31 off Oran in November 1943.

USN decommission/turnover carried as 28 Nov (uboat) vs 29 Nov 1944 (NavSource) - one-day source discrepancy flagged in gaps. Finding
Bureau of Ships, Ships' Data U.S. Naval Vessels, Vol. 2 (January 1945) - the Navy's own contemporaneous roster annotates the LST2-5 block 'Transferred to United Kingdom,' official primary corroboration of this hull's Royal Navy transfer. The volume's LST design table (LST-1 group) gives the class machinery record: ~328 ft oa x 50 ft, ~2,366 t beaching / 3,960-4,080 t trial displacement, 11.6 kt, 2 x General Motors 12-567A diesels at 1,700 shp on two shafts via Falk reduction gears, accommodations for 13 officers / ~106 enlisted.

    Limitations
Roster annotation applies to the LST2-5 hull block (which includes this hull); the PDF's staggered two-column OCR layout makes block-level annotation association visible but imperfectly ordered - transfer is independently corroborated by NavSource, uboat.net, and Wikipedia. Design-table data is class-level, not a hull record. No asbestos or material content in the source.

Peer-reviewed historical study documents that asbestos was used extensively as a fireproofing and insulating material in U.S. shipbuilding during WWII - the era and program under which this LST-1-class hull was mass-produced at Dravo in 1942 - and that wartime demand drove unprecedented asbestos utilization in naval and merchant construction.

    Finding
Era/design inference for this diesel-powered LST-1-class hull: the ship carries no steam plant (2 x GM 12-567A diesels, Falk reduction gear, diesel-driven generators), so the boiler/turbine-lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply. Era-standard asbestos-relevant applications for a 1942 diesel amphibious hull of this type are diesel exhaust lagging and gaskets, engine-room thermal/acoustic insulation, deck coverings and tile, bulkhead and accommodation insulation, and winch/crane brake linings. The December 1944-August 1945 Tyne refit for Far East service (NavSource) is a documented work period whose materials scope is unrecorded publicly.

    Limitations
Class/era inference only - no hull-specific insulation survey, material schedule, or work package located for LST-2. Names era-standard applications, not confirmed installed materials. No quantity. Product names are normalized era terms; no manufacturer attribution for this hull. Does not establish individual exposure or causation.

    Finding
NARA RG 24 'Logbooks of U.S. Navy Ships and Stations, 1941-1992' (NAID 594258) is partially digitized in the National Archives Catalog (213,027 file units online) and is the repository for this hull's WWII deck logs. Catalog search-within could not isolate an LST-2 file unit this session: queries against the series tokenize 'LST-2' into fuzzy matches across hundreds of LST-numbered file units (99 hits on the quoted term, none confirmed as this hull). WWII unnamed-vessel logs (1941-1950 subseries, arranged by hull symbol then hull number) are the expected location.

Deck logs would document operations and personnel, not insulation materials; useful for crew/position confirmation in any future exposure research.

    Finding type

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or verified litigation naming LST-2 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CourtListener sweeps completed 2026-10-02: '"LST-2" asbestos' (opinions) = 0 results; '"USS LST-2"' (opinions) = 0 results; '"LST-2"' (RECAP dockets) = 303 hits, sampled top 20 all name collisions (bankruptcy/criminal dockets with OCR-fragment matches, e.g. 'lst 2' inside payroll and complaint scans) - none ship-related, none asbestos. The hull left U.S. custody in 1947 with no museum successor, so the museum-hazmat evidentiary track open to surviving LSTs (LST-325/393/510) does not exist here.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1942 wartime hull is era-consistent with asbestos use. Hull-number-only LSTs are weak targets for name-based litigation sweeps (numbered only until the 1955 county-naming program); a 'no result' here is thinner than for a named ship. Deck logs, Dravo work packages, and RN refit records are undigitized leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
