DANFS records that LST-202 was laid down on 15 July 1942 at Seneca, Illinois, by the Chicago Bridge & Iron Co.; launched on 16 March 1943, sponsored by Mrs. P. I. Birchard; and commissioned on 9 April 1943. It records World War II assignment to the Asiatic-Pacific theater with operations at Cape Gloucester (December 1943, January and February 1944), the Admiralty Islands (February-March 1944), Saidor (January-February 1944), Hollandia (April-May 1944), Toem-Wakde-Sarmi (May 1944), Noemfoor (July 1944), Cape Sansapor (July-August 1944), Morotai (September 1944), and Leyte (October-November 1944); occupation duty in the Far East until early November 1945; decommissioning on 11 April 1946; striking from the Navy list on 28 August 1946; and sale to the Bethlehem Steel Co. of Seattle, Washington, on 16 April 1948 for scrapping. LST-202 earned five battle stars for World War II service.

NavSource Amphibious Photo Archive page for USS LST-202 documents: the ship was manned by the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II; commissioned 9 April 1943 with LT Benjamin Ayesa, USCGR, in command; assigned to LST Flotilla Seven, LST Group Twenty-One, LST Division Forty-Two; a campaign table with detailed date ranges matching the DANFS campaign list; occupation service in the Far East 15 October-3 November 1945; decommissioned 11 April 1946; struck 28 August 1946; sold for scrapping 16 April 1948 to Bethlehem Steel Co., Seattle. The commanding-officer list (five officers, all USCGR: Ayesa, Edge, Kelley, Gaillard, Elliot) is credited to the U.S. Coast Guard Historian's Office. Awards listed: American Campaign Medal; Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with five stars; World War II Victory Medal; Navy Occupation Service Medal with Asia clasp; Philippines Presidential Unit Citation; Philippine Liberation Medal with one star. The specification block lists 328 ft overall, 50 ft beam, two GM 12-567A 900 hp diesels, Falk main reduction gear, two propellers, 1,700 shp, 11.6 knots, 13 officers and 104 enlisted, troop accommodations of 16 officers and 147 enlisted, and two LCVP. Photo captions document the hull at Oro Bay (24 December 1943), Cape Gloucester (26-30 December 1943, January 1944), Cape Sudest (12 March 1944), Wakde-Sarmi (May 1944), Maffin Bay and Cape Opmarai (30 July 1944), and Leyte (20 October 1944), several with NARA identifiers (e.g., NAID 205586919, 205584302; III-SC 261034, 261039, 261053; USMC 69080).

NavSource is a volunteer-compiled archive transcribing official sources (NHHC, USCG Historian's Office, NARA); it names this hull throughout. The specification block is the class-typical LST-1 design block, not a hull-specific crew or material record. The page contains no asbestos, insulation, or abatement statement and supports no asbestos claim.

    Finding
The National WWII Museum digital collection holds an official U.S. Coast Guard photograph of 1st Marine Division Marines debarking from USS LST-202 at Cape Gloucester, New Britain (accession 2010.177.003). The official stamp transcribed on the museum page reads: 'LST 202 "Debarking at Cape Gloucester" / Out of the jaws of a U.S. Coast Guard manned LST (Landing ship, tanks) at Cape Gloucester, New Britain, come the Marines... 'Official U.S. Coast Guard Photo.' / LST 202 Built By: / Chicago Bridge & Iron Company / Shipbuilding Division / Seneca, Illinois. / Launching Date: March 16, 1943 / Sponsored by: Mrs. Alice Birchard.' The stamp independently corroborates Coast Guard manning, the builder, the launch date, and identifies the sponsor as Mrs. Alice Birchard (consistent with DANFS's 'Mrs. P. I. Birchard').

    Finding
Official Bureau of Ships design data for the LST design group specifies two General Motors 12-567A diesel engines, approximately 1,700 shaft horsepower, about 11.6 knots, and accommodations of 13 officers and 106 enlisted; the roster lists hull blocks including the block containing LST-202. This supports the diesel machinery description used for LST-202; it does not verify the hull's actual crew complement or any hull-specific material installation.

    Finding
Era/design inference: a 1942-43 diesel-powered LST could have asbestos-relevant materials in diesel or exhaust insulation, gaskets and packing, deck coverings, accommodation or bulkhead insulation, and winch or windlass brake linings. The diesel configuration documented in the BuShips design record means boiler and steam-lagging pathways are not supported for this hull.

No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record was located in the public sources searched: no asbestos survey, material schedule, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or qualifying litigation record naming LST-202 was found. CourtListener authenticated searches completed this session returned zero opinion hits for "LST-202" and for "USS LST-202" OR "LST 202"; the docket search returned two unrelated mortgage/foreclosure matters classified as name collisions, not asbestos litigation. The archived DANFS entry, NavSource page, WWII Museum record, and uboat.net entry contain no asbestos statement.
