NavSource record for this hull: LST-1-class tank landing ship laid down 21 December 1942 at Chicago Bridge and Iron Co., Seneca, IL; launched 16 June 1943; commissioned USS LST-213 on 7 July 1943 with Julian S. Gravely Jr., USNR, in command. Unit assignments: LST Flotilla Five (CAPT G.B. Carter), LST Group Fifteen (CDR V.K. Busck); then LST Flotilla Three (CDR A.A. Ageton), LST Group Eight, LST Division Fifteen. Campaign table: Marianas operation - capture and occupation of Saipan 15 June-20 July 1944; Tinian capture and occupation (page prints '24 to 20 July 1944' - an evident typographical error; DANFS gives July-August 1944); Leyte landings 30 October 1944. Notes participation in rescue of survivors after the sinking of Gambier Bay (CVE-73) during the Battle of Samar, 25 October 1944 - confirmed and broadened by the ship's own war diary (survivors received 28 October, six Taffy-3 units; see ev-05). Redesignated LST(H)-213, 15 September 1945; occupation service in the Far East 2 September-25 November 1945; decommissioned March 1946 and transferred to COMNAVFE Shipping Control Authority Japan (SCAJAP), redesignated Q095; struck 5 March 1947; sold 26 June 1947 to American Military Government, Korea. The official BuShips roster names this hull: 'LST213 (ex-ATL213)' - Chicago Bridge & Iron Co., Seneca, Ill.; keel 21 Dec 42, launch 16 Jun 43, commission 7 Jul 43 - matching DANFS/NavSource exactly. The class design table for design group LST1-490 (this hull's group) gives: 328 ft oa / 316 ft wl, 50 ft beam, 2,366 t light / 4,080 t trial displacement, 11.6 kt, 2 GM 12-567A diesels at 1,700 shp, single Falk reduction gear, 3 diesel-drive 100 kW 230 V DC ship's service generators, 4,320 Bbls diesel fuel, accommodations 13 officers / 106 enlisted, armament 2 twin + 4 single 40-mm AA mounts. The 'ex-ATL213' notation records that the hull was ordered under the program's original Atlantic Tank Lighter designation before the LST type symbol.

OTHER LITIGATION - not asbestos. Published Court of Claims merits opinion in a service-connected disability retirement action by this hull's commanding officer: Lt.(j.g.) George Hoppock assumed command of LST-213 at Funafuti, Ellice Islands, 8 January 1944 (age 25), and commanded her through the Saipan, Tinian, Leyte, and Lingayan Gulf (Luzon) operations until detached 27 February 1945 with diagnosed 'true Combat Fatigue.' Trial-stage findings of fact (commissioner trial May/Nov 1964; Correction Board record) name the hull throughout: 'a company of 110 men and 8 officers'; a high-octane gasoline explosion aboard during the Saipan landing; 26 air attacks in one hour at Leyte with five Zeros and one bomber credited; the adjacent ammunition-dump explosion that 'pushed the 5,000-ton ship sideways'; 'picked up 212 survivors' leaving Leyte Gulf; and a Luzon mission with hull trouble, a collision, and fire aboard. The court awarded relief on the disability claim.

Litigation-stage discipline: these are trial-court findings of fact about the ship's service and her CO's medical condition - NOT an asbestos or materials case; there is no exposure, product, or fiber content anywhere in the opinion. Survivor count (212) differs from the war diary's 214 (12 officers + 202 enlisted) - noted, not reconciled. The opinion's 'approximately 400 Marines' capacity figure is narrative, not spec.

Era/design inference for a diesel-powered LST-1-class hull built Dec 1942-Jul 1943 at the CB&I 'Prairie Shipyard' (Seneca, IL) in the Navy's peak asbestos-consumption period: no boilers or steam plant - the steam-lagging pathway does not apply. Plausible era-standard asbestos applications aboard the type: diesel exhaust lagging and gaskets, engine-room thermal/acoustic insulation, deck coverings and tile, bulkhead/accommodation insulation, winch and crane brake linings. Ship-generated records document fitting-out and a 10-day repair availability aboard - the work events at which era materials would have been installed or disturbed - but record no material content.
