[2]Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships, LST-215 (Navy historical record), archived copy [nhhc_danfs]

- Archived DANFS entry, sole narrative paragraph
- Finding type
- vessel_history
- Finding
- The Navy's DANFS entry states that LST-215 was laid down 8 January 1943 at Seneca, Illinois, by Chicago Bridge & Iron Co.; launched 26 June 1943; sponsored by Mrs. Frank T. Kegley; and commissioned 12 July 1943. It further states that the tank landing ship never saw active service with the United States Navy, was transferred to the United Kingdom on 19 July 1943, returned to U.S. Navy custody on 27 July 1946, struck from the Navy list on 29 October 1946, and sold and converted for merchant service on 11 September 1947.

- The live NHHC replacement URLs tested 404 on 2026-10-02, so this is explicitly an archived Navy source. It establishes identity and custody/service chronology only; it contains no asbestos, materials, machinery, complement, condition, exposure, or causation finding.

[3]Occupational Safety and Health Administration, Occupational Exposure to Asbestos, 59 Fed. Reg. 40964 (Aug. 10, 1994), shipyard historical-contact discussion [federal_register]
- Locator
- Shipbuilding and repairing—historical contact with asbestos in shipyard work; discussion of ships delivered before 1975
- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- OSHA's 1994 shipyard asbestos rulemaking states that asbestos products were used extensively on American ships from the early 1940s through the late 1970s, including insulation of steam and hot-water pipes, boilers, and tanks in machinery spaces, ceiling tile, and fire-resistant bulkhead sheets; OSHA stated its belief that all ships delivered before 1975 contained extensive asbestos insulation materials. LST-215 was delivered in 1943.

- Early 1940s-late 1970s (OSHA historical discussion); LST-215 delivered 1943
- Population
- Historic shipbuilding, repair, maintenance, and shipbreaking workers (general context)
- Limitations
- This is a regulator's ship-era generalization, not a survey or specification naming LST-215. It supports Tier-2 historical context only and does not establish that any particular asbestos-containing product was installed, retained, disturbed, or present aboard this hull; it does not establish individual exposure, causation, quantity, or legal eligibility.

[4]CourtListener authenticated API output via /Users/charlesfletcher/devin-prompts/cl-auth-search.py [court_record]
- Locator
- Helper output: exact-name opinion query count 0; exact hull-number docket query count 2, both classified name collisions
- Finding type
- litigation_documented
- Finding
- Authenticated CourtListener searching was started through the required fleet helper. The exact-name opinion query for "USS LST-215" returned zero results. The exact hull-number docket query for "LST-215" returned two non-asbestos name collisions: United States v. Information Associated With Computer Servers Hosted By Webzilla, No. 1:18-mj-01019 (E.D.N.Y.), and Ricks v. Barnes, No. 1:05-cv-01756 (D.D.C.).

- CourtListener search conducted 2026-10-02
- Limitations
- This is not a complete negative litigation result. The shared helper reported fleet-wide pacing-budget exhaustion while the exact-name docket and exact-hull opinion requests were pending; no retries were made into a throttle. The completed queries found no qualifying asbestos litigation, but the two uncompleted query types remain an access gap. No conclusion about asbestos presence, exposure, causation, or legal eligibility follows.

- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- NARA's ship-plan index lists LST-215 under Record Group 19, Records of the Bureau of Ships, as a microfilm item, National Archives Identifier 175665331. NARA's vessel-asbestos research guidance directs researchers to RG 19 correspondence organized by individual hull designation, class, and yard when seeking Navy-vessel asbestos and machinery records.

- RG 19 records; no item-content date verified
- Limitations
- The index and research guide establish a record path, not the contents of the microfilm. No reel or hull-file content was retrieved, reviewed, or assumed; asbestos-specific documentation in it is unknown. This is not evidence of material aboard LST-215.
