- Documented for this hull: laid down 16 March 1943 at Seneca, Ill., by Chicago Bridge & Iron Co.; launched 17 August 1943; sponsored by Mrs. Ruth Clydedale; commissioned 10 September 1943. WWII Asiatic-Pacific operations: occupation of Kwajalein and Majuro Atolls (January-February 1944); capture and occupation of Saipan (June-July 1944); Tinian capture and occupation (July 1944); capture and occupation of southern Palau Islands (September-October 1944). 'Following the war, LST-222 was redesignated LSTH-222 on 15 September 1945. She performed occupation duty in the Far East until early February 1946 and served with the Military Sea Transportation Service as T-LST-222 from 31 March 1952 to 15 July 1972. On 15 July 1972, the tank landing ship was transferred to the Philippines as a loan, where, as of 1 January 1979, she remained active as Mindoro Occidental (LT-93).' Earned four battle stars for World War II service.

- Finding
- A diesel-powered LST-1-class tank landing ship built in 1943 carries the era-standard asbestos-relevant applications for the type: diesel-engine exhaust lagging and gaskets, engine-room thermal/acoustic insulation, valve packing, deck coverings/tile, bulkhead and accommodation insulation, and winch/crane brake linings. The diesel plant eliminates the boiler/steam-line lagging pathway of steam vessels; the enclosed tank deck, berthing spaces, and engine room are the relevant compartments.

- Locator

- Finding type

- Finding
- GAO documented that the Navy used asbestos insulation extensively aboard ships, did not begin substituting alternative insulation until the early 1970s, and under standing policy (1975, modified 1979) removed asbestos insulation only when damaged or when required for repairs - meaning original-era insulation typically remained in place for decades. This hull's U.S. service (1943-46 Navy; 1952-72 MSTS) spans that entire era.

- Finding
- No qualifying asbestos litigation naming this hull located on CourtListener. The single docket-level hit for 'LST-222' - Bethea v. Smith (D.D.C. 1:07-cv-01112, suit nature '530 Prisoner petitions - habeas corpus') - is a name collision: the string appears inside a scanned pro se prisoner's filing, and the case is neither asbestos litigation nor ship-related. Opinion-level searches for all name variants returned zero results. A separate class-level sweep (lst-1-class profile, 2026-09-16) found only an incidental mention of USS LST-579 inside a Navy reunion notice in Gitto v. A.W. Chesterton (S.D.N.Y. 1:07-cv-04771) - not this hull and not an exposure record.

- Coverage limitation: residual query variants ('LSTH-222' dockets; 'Mindoro Occidental' o+r) were pending fleet pacing at record freeze - see search_ledger sl-06; hull-number-only WWII designations also limit text-search recall (scanned filings OCR 'LST-222' inconsistently). An empty litigation index does not establish that no claim was ever filed - PACER-level or state-docket coverage may exceed RECAP's.

- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or docketed case naming LST-222, LST(H)-222, T-LST-222, Q044, or Mindoro Occidental was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). The only 'asbestos aboard' material surfaced is generic law-firm marketing asserting asbestos on WWII LSTs as a class (e.g., gorilaw.com landing-ships page) - excluded by source policy; nothing ship-specific is asserted by any authoritative source.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - 1943 construction plus 1952-72 MSTS service sit squarely in the documented asbestos era, and undigitized records (WWII deck logs, SCAJAP files, MSTS maintenance records, Philippine disposal documents) remain open leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
