Documented for this hull: 'LST-230 was laid down on 10 June 1943 at Seneca, Ill., by the Chicago Bridge & Iron Co.; launched on 12 October 1943; sponsored by Mrs. Lottie Reeks; and commissioned on 3 November 1943.' WWII: 'assigned to the European theater and participated in the invasion of Normandy in June 1944 and the invasion of southern France in August and September 1944.' Postwar: 'performed occupation duty in the Far East in September 1945 and March 1946. She returned to the United States and was decommissioned on 4 March 1946 and was transferred to the Shipping Control Authority, Japan, on 31 March 1952, where she operated as T-LST-230. T-LST-230 was transferred to the Philippine Navy on 13 September 1976.' Earned two battle stars for WWII service.

    Finding
NARA's published finding aid names LST-230 outright: the BuMed series 'historical supplements submitted with sanitary reports, 1941-46' (7 ft.) has a first subseries 'arranged alphabetically by ship name, with nominal style names (Yorktown, Devilfish) and symbolic/number style names (LST-230, PT-109) alphabetized together.' LST-230 is the aid's own example of a numbered-hull folder - indicating a ship-named folder exists for this hull containing WWII-era medical/sanitation supplementary material (the aid describes ship plans, published material, yearbooks, narrative histories, photographs, maps, chronologies in substantive folders).

    Finding
A diesel-powered LST-1-class landing ship built mid-1943 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-insulation era. Era-standard applications for a vessel of this type and period were engine-room thermal insulation and diesel-exhaust lagging, machinery gaskets and valve packing, deck coverings, and accommodation and galley insulation. As a diesel ship she carried no boilers or steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway of steam vessels does not apply; the exposure-relevant systems are the diesel machinery and interior outfit.

    Finding
The hull is extant and was not scrapped: photo-documented in Philippine Navy service as BRP Laguna from 1994 through 19 June 2023 (Pag-Asa Island resupply, Spratlys), and reported in active service following a roughly five-year repair period ending with a 2023 Western Command (WESCOM JOA) deployment. The Philippine Navy renumbered her LT-501 to LS-501 in April 2016. An extant WWII-built hull of original-era construction is consistent with retained period materials; repair/refit periods are also the documented pathway for material disturbance on extant hulls.

Photo captions document presence and general configuration, not material condition; no survey, abatement, or hazmat record for the hull - U.S. or Philippine - was located. historical_record
    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or docketed case naming USS LST-230 / T-LST-230 / BRP Laguna was found in the public sources searched. CourtListener (authenticated API v4): opinion searches 'LST-230', 'USS LST-230', and 'T-LST-230' and docket searches 'LST-230' and 'USS LST-230' all returned zero results; the 'T-LST-230' docket and 'BRP Laguna' queries were interrupted by fleet request-pacing and are logged as blocked, not as negative results. Secondary web sweeps surfaced no qualifying case; the only 'asbestos aboard' material is law-firm marketing content (generic 'asbestos on landing ships' coverage; asbestos-ships.com Chicago Bridge & Iron yard page asserting era asbestos use without primary sourcing) - excluded by source policy.

Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - and the hull's survival in active service means original-era material may persist. CourtListener coverage is partial (see search_ledger for which queries ran vs. blocked). NARA RG 52 ship folder and RG 24 deck logs are undigitized open leads; Philippine Navy maintenance/refit records are not in English-language public sources. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.

    Finding
CORRECTION (source defect): the shipbuildinghistory LST-230 row carries two errors. (1) Keel date '27-May-43' conflicts with DANFS and NavSource, both 10 June 1943 (the table's own '138 days on ways' figure is internally consistent with its 27-May date, so this is a data conflict, not a typo chain). (2) The disposition cell reads 'Portunus (AGP 4) 1946, to the Philippines 1976 as Laguna (LT 501)' - but USS Portunus (AGP-4) was ex-LST-330, which the same table's own LST-330 row documents ('Later AGP 4 Portunus, scrapped 1947'); DANFS and NavSource confirm LST-230 was never an AGP - she went SCAJAP Q082 then MSTS T-LST-230. The Philippine-transfer half of the cell is correct. Separately, derivative DANFS copies (historycentral.com) render the sponsor's name as 'Lettie Reeks'; the archived DANFS page reads 'Lottie Reeks.'
