Standard secondary compilation of merchant/naval yard records - not an official source, but build dates concur with DANFS and NavSource. Finding
Era inference for this hull: a welded-steel diesel-powered amphibious auxiliary built March-July 1943. The LST-1 class plant (two GM 12-567A diesels, Falk reduction gear, diesel-driven generators) had no boilers or steam lines, removing the boiler-lagging pathway typical of steam combatants; era-standard asbestos-relevant applications aboard a 1943 amphibious auxiliary would be engine and exhaust insulation/lagging, machinery gaskets and valve packing, deck coverings, accommodation insulation, and electrical insulation. WWII-era U.S. shipbuilding used asbestos extensively as insulation and fireproofing (Corn & Starr 1987), and the Navy used asbestos insulation aboard vessels into the 1970s (GAO HRD-80-2).

Missouri Valley Bridge & Iron construction trades (Evansville, 1943); commissioning crew (~117 ship's company plus embarked troops); occupation-duty complement (1945-1946); Southern Shipwrecking Co. scrapping workforce (New Orleans, 1947-1948)
    Limitations
Inference from class spec and era documentation - no ship-specific material list exists for this hull. Diesel propulsion removes the boiler-lagging pathway but does not remove era-standard asbestos in gaskets, packing, insulation, or finishes. The inference names era-standard applications, not confirmed installed materials; no quantity; no manufacturer attribution. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure.

Peer-reviewed historical study documents that asbestos was used extensively as a fireproofing and insulating material in U.S. shipbuilding during WWII - the era and program under which this LST-1-class hull was mass-produced at an inland emergency yard - and that wartime demand drove unprecedented asbestos utilization aboard naval and merchant-type hulls.

Builder-yard context: the Indiana Historical Society holds the Kellar manuscript 'The Evansville Shipyard: Outside Any Shipbuilding Zone' (collection SC 0967), whose finding aid records that the Navy selected Evansville in January 1942 for a new inland shipyard; production began summer 1942; the yard became the largest wartime employer in Evansville with over 19,000 workers at its 1944 peak; and it ceased production in late summer 1945 after constructing 202 vessels, 167 of them LSTs.

    Limitations
Documents the builder yard's scale and period, not this hull's materials. No asbestos statement in the finding aid; the manuscript itself is unexamined. Yard context establishes only that ~19,000-worker wartime construction occurred during the era of standard asbestos use - it does not establish asbestos exposure for this hull's builders or crew.

    Finding
Woolsey v. Missouri Valley Bridge & Iron Co., 119 Ind. App. 391, 88 N.E.2d 54 (1949): a wartime occupational-disease claim against this hull's builder. The decedent, Elbert Woolsey, worked for Missouri Valley Bridge & Iron as a pipe fitter in ship compartments from 21 June 1944 to 11 November 1944; his estate alleged he was poisoned by fumes and gases from welding galvanized metal. The Industrial Board of Indiana found he was not exposed to and did not contract an occupational disease in that employment (two members dissenting); the Court of Appeals affirmed the award on 17 October 1949. This is not an asbestos claim and names no vessel - it documents that occupational-disease litigation against the yard's workforce was contemporaneous with LST-241's construction era.

Builder-level litigation context only: the alleged exposure was welding fumes on galvanized metal, NOT asbestos; the claim failed at the Industrial Board and the denial was affirmed on appeal. Names the employer and trade (ship-compartment pipe fitter, 1944) but no hull. Classified as non-qualifying litigation for asbestos purposes - carried only as yard-era context. No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, environmental filing, or docketed asbestos case naming LST-241 / LST 241 / USS LST-241 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). DANFS, NavSource, the Colton yard table, and the Indiana Historical Society finding aid contain no asbestos or insulation-material statement. Web search surfaced only law-firm marketing listicles asserting asbestos aboard WWII-era Navy ships generally - excluded by source policy.

Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1943 wartime hull is era-consistent with asbestos-containing materials, and this hull's NARA holdings (deck logs 1943-1945, war diaries, action reports) are unexamined. Does not establish presence or absence; does not establish or defeat any exposure claim or legal eligibility.
