Documented for this hull: 'LST-247 was laid down on 17 May 1943 at Evansville, Ind., by the Missouri Valley Bridge & Iron Co.; launched on 30 July 1943; sponsored by Mrs. Wesley W. Allen; and commissioned on 26 August 1943, Lt. E. V. Converse, USNR, in command. During World War II, LST-247 was assigned to the Asiatic-Pacific theater and participated in the capture and occupation of Guam in July 1944. Following the war, LST-247 was redesignated LSTH-247 on 15 September 1945 and was decommissioned on 27 June 1946. She was struck from the Navy list on 15 August 1946. On 14 October 1947, the tank landing ship was sold to William E. Skinner for scrapping. LSTH-247 earned one battle star for World War II service as LST-247.'

    Limitations
Ship-specific history only; no asbestos or material content. The DANFS entry is thin - it names only the Guam operation (the Iwo Jima operation and Solomons/New Guinea service documented elsewhere are absent), and its 27 June 1946 decommissioning date conflicts with NavSource and the crew chronology (2 July 1946) - see gaps. Contemporaneous official BuShips roster entry: 'LST247 (ex-ATL247). Missouri Valley B. & I. Co., Evansville, Ind. - keel laid 17 May 43; ship launched 30 Jul [43]; date of first commission 9 Aug 43.' Confirms the builder and the 17 May 1943 keel date (against a 12 May 1943 variant circulating in secondary sources), records the pre-LST contract designation ATL-247, and gives a 9 Aug 1943 'first commission' - consistent with the reduced/ferry commissioning used to deliver inland-built LSTs down the Mississippi before the full commissioning DANFS records on 26 Aug 1943.

ST. LOUIS' and LST-247 remained in the transport area during the night retirement; beached and unloading 23-26 July under intermittent mortar fire (reported 15% unloaded on the 23rd, 25% on the 24th, 100% by 26th); 25 July - 'LST 481 and 247 ... were observed to have taken numerous mortar hits resulting in considerable damage'; 26 July - 'LST 247 had retracted from the beach during night having completed unloading except for Naval ammo'; 28 July - departed Agana Bay in Task Unit 53.18.2 for Eniwetok, routed onward to Pearl Harbor.

A diesel-powered LST built May-August 1943 sits inside the Navy's documented asbestos-use era; era-standard asbestos-relevant applications aboard a ship of this type and period were GM diesel-exhaust lagging and gaskets, engine-room thermal/acoustic insulation, deck coverings/tile, bulkhead and accommodation insulation, and winch/crane brake linings - applied in a hull whose tank deck, troop spaces, and crew accommodations confined work and living alongside machinery spaces. As a diesel ship she carried no steam plant - the boiler/turbine lagging pathway does not apply. The 1945 LST(H) hospital conversion (medical spaces, berthing rework) and documented wartime availabilities (Pearl Harbor Navy Yard Aug 1944-Jan 1945; Lake Union Dry Dock May-Jul 1945; San Diego Aug 1945) are insulation-relevant rework events.

The Indiana Historical Society finding aid documents the builder yard: the Evansville Shipyard (Missouri Valley Bridge & Iron) began production summer 1942, was Evansville's largest wartime employer at over 19,000 peak workers (1944), and built 202 vessels including 167 LSTs before ceasing production in late summer 1945.

CORRECTION: NavSource assigns this hull to 'LST Group Fifteen ... LST Division Seventy-Nine.' Both contemporaneous war diaries roster 'LST 247 - Lt. E. V. Converse, USNR' in LST DIVISION 79 under the heading 'LST GROUP FORTY'; the same diaries place Group Fifteen (CDR V. K. Busck, flagship LST-488) over Divisions 29/30. Division 79 agrees in all sources; the parent-group attribution differs - the primary record (Group Forty, May-July 1944) is carried over NavSource's Group Fifteen. Separately: DANFS credits one battle star for WWII service; NavSource credits two (Guam and Iwo Jima campaigns) - unresolved (gaps).

Corrects an organizational attribution, not a material/exposure claim. Task-group assignments could shift between operations - the diaries fix Div 79 under Group Forty for the May-July 1944 Marianas period; NavSource's basis (likely registry-derived) is not shown. Battle-star count conflict remains open.

    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, material schedule, or verified litigation naming USS LST-247 / LST(H)-247 (or ATL-247) was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CourtListener opinion index, authenticated query '"LST-247"' (API v4, type=o): count 0 - no result (classified: no result, not a claim that no case exists anywhere). The CourtListener docket index (type=r) could not be queried this session - fleet-wide pacing budget exhausted; logged as an access gap, NOT a negative result. The class-level CourtListener sweep recorded in the LST-1 class profile likewise located no asbestos docket naming any specific LST hull - its only document-level hit (Gitto v. A.W. Chesterton, S.D.N.Y. 1:07-cv-04771) is a scanned reunion-notice compilation mentioning 'USS LST 579' incidentally. Secondary web sweeps surface only law-firm marketing listicles asserting asbestos aboard LSTs generically, with no primary sourcing - excluded by source policy.

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1943-built diesel amphibious ship carries a reasonable era-consistent inference only. RG 24 deck logs, BuShips contract/work packages, and the 1947 scrapping record are undigitized leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
