NavSource is a volunteer-compiled archive, not a primary government source - it is the canonical per-hull amphibious reference and its entries compile official records, but each datum ultimately derives from Navy records. Its dates agree with DANFS except the Bizerte turnover (23 Aug 1943) which post-dates DANFS's scope. Documents service history and spec data, not materials or asbestos content.

Official BuShips design table for the LST1-490 group (LST-25 falls within this block): length 328 ft oa / 316 ft wl, beam 50 ft, displacement 2,366 t (light/beaching) and 4,080 t (trial), trial speed 11.6 kt, propulsion 2x 'G. M. Diesel, 12-567A' at 1,700 shp on twin propellers - the Boilers column for all diesel LST blocks (1-490, 491-541, 542-931, 980-1059, 1081-1152) is blank; only the later turbine-powered LST1153-1155 show boiler entries (2 drum, 440 psi/740 deg F). Confirms at design level that LST-25's group had no boilers or steam machinery.

Class/design-group document, not a hull-level material schedule: establishes propulsion type and design-group characteristics for LST-25 but says nothing about insulation composition, gaskets, or other materials aboard this specific ship. shipscribe.com is a private archival scan site - the document is an unmodified official BuShips publication (NAVSHIPS 250-011).

    asbestos_application
    Finding
Era/design inference for a diesel-powered amphibious ship built at Dravo Corp., Wilmington DE in the peak asbestos years 1942-43: NO boilers or steam plant - the steam-lagging pathway does not apply; plausible asbestos applications on this type concentrate in diesel-engine and exhaust-system insulation, gaskets and packing throughout the engineering spaces, electrical insulation/cable, deck coverings (incl. tank-deck surfaces), accommodation-space insulation, and brake/friction linings on winches and the stern-anchor windlass. GAO HRD-80-2 documents that the Navy did not begin systematic asbestos substitution until the early 1970s - decades after this hull was sold for scrapping (1948).

    Limitations
Class/era and design inference only - no hull-level material schedule, insulation spec, or survey exists in the public record for this ship. Does not establish presence, absence, or quantity of ACM aboard; because the hull was scrapped in 1948, no present-day survey question exists. GAO HRD-80-2 is program-level documentation (gao.gov returns HTTP 403 to automated fetchers - product-page description used, consistent with BATCH-01 treatment).

Official USCG Historian's Office roster lists LST-25 among the WWII tank landing ships manned by Coast Guard crews (roster headnote: no commission date is given for 'commissioned U.S. Navy warships or U.S. Army vessels manned by Coast Guard crews,' confirming these remain USN vessels with USCG personnel). Confirms the Coast Guard-manned population segment for this hull, consistent with DANFS's 'Lt. J. B. Holmes, USCG, in command' and NavSource's Bizerte turnover entry.

The roster is a list-level entry - it establishes CG manning but gives no dates, crew size, or ship-detail. history.uscg.mil blocks automated fetch (HTTP 403); LST-25's roster presence verified via Wayback Machine capture 2019-04-21 (web.archive.org/web/20190421135806/https://www.history.uscg.mil/Historic-Ships/). The NavSource CG-manned LST index (navsource.net/archives/16/cg16idx.htm, live) adds that LST-25's CG crew 'cross-decked' with the Navy crew of USS LST-381 in August 1943.

Museum-catalogued photograph naming this hull: LST-25 unloading troops and trucks between St Laurent and Vierville during the Normandy landings, June 1944. St Laurent/Vierville are in the Omaha assault sector - complements the Gold-sector photos (A 23890/A 23894, documented on NavSource and in IWM object 205187086). IWM catalogues the object under 'Royal Navy, LST 25' because the photographer was a Royal Navy official photographer - the vessel itself was USS LST-25.

    historical_record
    Finding
No qualifying ship-specific record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, builder's material schedule, hazmat disclosure, or docketed case naming LST-25 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CourtListener opinion-index queries ('LST-25', 'LST 25', 'USS LST-25') each returned zero hits; the RECAP docket queries ('LST-25' and 'LST 25') returned the same 27 dockets that on inspection are all name collisions (the string appearing incidentally inside scanned attachments in unrelated criminal, patent, securities, and bankruptcy matters - none references a Navy vessel or asbestos). A web-level search for LST-25 + asbestos/mesothelioma returned only law-firm marketing pages - none ship-specific, none citable. NVR has no detail page for this hull (disposed of in 1948, predating the register's coverage horizon).

    Limitations
Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - a 1942-43 diesel-powered hull is consistent with era materials, but no hull-level schedule or survey is digitized. Because the hull was scrapped in 1948, no surviving-structure survey question exists; the undocumented exposure-relevant windows are wartime service (1943-46, including the USCG-manned segment) and scrapping at the Kaiser Co. Seattle yard (1948). Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
