During World War II, LST-262 was assigned to the European theater and participated in the movement of Convoy UGS-36 in April 1944 and the invasion of Normandy in June 1944. She was decommissioned on 14 January 1946 and struck from the Navy list on 19 June 1946. On 9 December 1947, she was sold to N. Block & Co., of Norfolk, Va., for scrapping. LST-262 earned two battle stars for World War II service.'

- Official BuShips roster entry for this hull: 'LST262 (ex-ATL262)' - built by American Bridge Co., Ambridge, Pa.; keel 7 Sept 42; launch 13 Feb 43; commission 15 Jun 43 (dates matching DANFS, including the 15 June 1943 commissioning). The ex-ATL262 notation documents her original ATL-series designation before the LST classification. The Vol. 2 machinery design table places the LST1-490 group (which includes this hull) at 2 x General Motors Diesel 12-567A, 1,700 shp.

- Finding
- Convoy-level context for this hull's 'Convoy UGS-36' battle-star credit: per the DANFS entry for escort USS Alden (DD-211), UGS-36 comprised 72 merchantmen and 18 tank landing ships shepherded by 16 escort vessels; escorts drove off a suspected U-boat late 31 March, and early on 1 April 1944 twenty-two German aircraft attacked the convoy - escorts shot down two aircraft and probably damaged two others; UGS-36 reached Bizerte on 3 April.

- Finding
- A welded-steel diesel landing ship built 1942-43 inside the documented Navy asbestos era: plausible era-standard asbestos applications aboard a vessel of this type were diesel engine and exhaust lagging, machinery-space insulation, accommodation-area insulation, gaskets, valve and flange packing, electrical insulation, and deck coverings or cement. Because she carried no steam plant, the boiler/turbine lagging pathway that dominates steam-vessel exposure does not apply; her enclosed engine room, tank deck, and troop compartments bounded the crew's contact with any lagging or insulation present.

- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or verified litigation naming USS LST-262 was found in the public sources searched. CourtListener exact-phrase search on the opinion index returned zero hits for 'LST-262' (authenticated API v4, 2026-10-02); the RECAP docket index and the 'USS LST-262' variant were not run - the fleet-wide pacing budget saturated again after that one query, logged as blocked for those variants only, not as a negative result. Secondary web sweeps surfaced no qualifying case and no hull-specific documentation; the only 'asbestos aboard' material is generic law-firm marketing content covering LSTs or Navy ships generally (asbestos.com, mesotheliomahope.com, gorilaw.com, swmwlaw.com, bellucklaw.com listicles - excluded by source policy; none names this hull).
