DeGraaf; and commissioned on 1 September 1943. During World War II, LST-271 was assigned to the Asiatic-Pacific theater and participated in the following operations: Occupation of Kwajalein and Majuro Atolls - January and February 1944; Capture and occupation of Saipan - June and July 1944; Tinian capture and occupation - July 1944; Capture and occupation of southern Palau Islands - September and October 1944; Lingayen Gulf landing - January 1945. LST-271 returned to the United States and was decommissioned on 22 April 1946 and struck from the Navy list on 5 June 1946. On 15 April 1948, she was sold to the Basalt Rock Co., Inc., of Napa, Calif., for scrapping. LST-271 earned five battle stars for World War II service.'

- NavSource is a volunteer secondary compilation, not a primary registry - its milestones track DANFS/BuShips where both exist (all milestone dates agree here). Contains no asbestos content. USNR commanding officer at commissioning and absence from the NavSource Coast Guard-manned LST index indicate Navy manning, not USCG.

- Finding
- Official BuShips roster entry for this hull: 'LST271 (ex-ATL271)' in the American Bridge Co., Ambridge, Pa. builder block - keel 21 Jan 43; launch 25 Jul 43; first commission 1 Sept 43 (dates matching DANFS). The ex-ATL271 notation documents her original ATL-series designation before the LST classification. The Vol. 2 machinery design table places the LST1-490 design group (which includes this hull) at 2 x General Motors Diesel 12-567A, 1,700 shp, Falk reduction gear, diesel-driven 100 kW generators; design accommodations 13 officers / 106 enlisted.

- Primary-source roster corroborating builder and milestone dates; no asbestos or material content. The machinery and accommodations figures are design-group data (LST1-490), not a hull-specific crew or outfit record. OCR text layer has staggered column layout - date attribution verified by alignment of the LST271 row with the column headers and the Ambridge builder block; the ex-ATL designation is explicit in the roster entry.

- Finding type

- Finding
- A reproduced wartime operation-plan document names this hull: the Third Fleet Western Attack Force Attack Landing Order dated 23 August 1944 lists LST-271 among the ships of LST Unit TWO (task unit 32.13.3, Lieut.-Comdr. Hoyt) within TG 32.3.6, the Peleliu Transport Group, under LST Flotilla Captain Sampson - placing the hull in the Western Caroline Islands (Peleliu/southern Palau) assault organization consistent with her campaign credit. Companion document 'Beach White - Appendix 4 to Annex D, CTF 32 Operation Plan A501-44' (navsource.net/archives/10/16/pdf/160243b.pdf) is the beach-intelligence appendix and does not name the hull.

- LST-271 crew and embarked troops assigned to the Peleliu transport group (Aug-Sep 1944)
- Limitations
- The page is a scan of the original operation order hosted by NavSource; hull-list transcription was done by OCR of the image PDF ('LST's ... 267, 268, 271, 661, 225') - the LST-271 numeral is legible in the unit-two list but the document is cited at document level, not as an OCR-verbatim source. An operational-assignment record only: no asbestos or material content, and it does not by itself prove the hull beached at Peleliu (unit assignment vs. executed movement).

- asbestos_application
- Finding
- A welded-steel diesel landing ship built 1943 inside the documented Navy asbestos era: plausible era-standard asbestos applications aboard a vessel of this type were diesel engine and exhaust lagging, machinery-space insulation, accommodation-area insulation, gaskets, valve and flange packing, electrical insulation, and deck coverings or cement. Because she carried no steam plant, the boiler/turbine lagging pathway that dominates steam-vessel exposure does not apply; her enclosed engine room, tank deck, and troop compartments bounded the crew's contact with any lagging or insulation present.

- GAO product-page highlights: 'GAO reviewed the Navy's efforts to protect workers from asbestos exposure at the Long Beach and Norfolk Naval Shipyards,' including 'the use of asbestos in Navy ships, the cost of removing asbestos from Navy ships, and compensation programs for asbestos-related disabilities'; the Navy's 1975 policy removed/replaced with nonasbestos materials only insulation that was damaged or had to be removed for repairs, modified in 1979 to selective replacement in high-maintenance areas - documenting Navy asbestos-insulation use aboard ships through the era covering this hull's 1943 construction and 1943-46 service.

- Archival leads for this hull: NHHC holds photo NH 83630 showing the hull at anchor in San Francisco Bay circa 1945-46; NARA RG 24 holds the ship's deck logs (1943-46) which are not publicly digitized; RG 19/38 may hold BuShips and amphibious-force records for the Flotilla 13 / Group 38 / Division 75 units; the CTF 32 A501-44 operation-plan originals are NARA holdings reproduced at NavSource. - Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or verified litigation naming USS LST-271 was found in the public sources searched. All four authenticated CourtListener queries returned zero hits: 'LST-271' in the opinion index (type=o), 'LST-271' in the docket/RECAP index (type=r), 'USS LST-271' (type=o), and 'LST 271' spaced variant (type=o). Secondary web sweeps surfaced no qualifying case and no hull-specific documentation.

- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - it marks the search extent. The CourtListener sweep covers the federal opinion and RECAP docket indexes for the exact hull designation and common variants; state-court dockets and unindexed filings are outside that coverage. NARA RG 24 deck logs and any scrapping-contract records for the 1948 sale are undigitized leads. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
