[4]Official 'Secret' Report of Loss of Ship, USS LST-282, File No. 44-1, Serial 005, 2 September 1944, CO L. E. Gilbert to Secretary of the Navy (transcription hosted on the USS LST-282 memorial site, landingship.com) [other_primary]

- Finding
- The commanding officer's formal loss report: LST-282, part of Task Group 87.4, was proceeding to Green Beach at approximately 2050B on 15 August 1944 when a German twin-engine aircraft released a radio-controlled bomb that dove into the ship a few feet forward of the superstructure, left of centerline, penetrating the main deck and exploding below. Crews' quarters aft, officers' country, and the tank deck to frame 26 were ablaze within ~1 minute; fore and aft sections were cut off by fire within ~5 minutes; no fire-main pressure. Abandon ship was ordered; the ship was abandoned ~15 minutes after the fire started. The ship drifted to the left flank of Green Beach, the bow settled on rocks ~40 yards offshore, burned into the next day, and was 'almost totally destroyed by the fire.'

- Finding
- Family-compiled casualty accounting: 'Fifteen enlisted men and two officers of the crew... are now dead' - i.e., 17 Navy crew killed in the 15 August 1944 loss; embarked Army personnel also died and were wounded (the loss report notes all Army personnel had been ordered to their vehicles on the tank deck below, where the bomb exploded). Includes the BuPers 'missing' telegram text and survivor-sourced narrative of the fire and abandonment.

- Finding type
- asbestos_application
- Finding
- Era/design inference for a diesel-powered LST-1-class hull: no boilers - asbestos-relevant applications aboard WWII LST construction were diesel exhaust lagging and gaskets, engine-room thermal/acoustic insulation, deck coverings/tile, bulkhead and accommodation insulation, and winch/crane brake linings. This hull burned nearly completely and sank in 1944; no postwar career, conversion, museum, or abatement history exists.

The class profile's BuShips SDB-1945 v2 scan URL (shipscribe.com) 404s as of 2026-10-02 with no Wayback capture; the inference stands on the class file's prior verification plus NavSource machinery data. Establishes no quantities and no exposure for any individual.

- Locator
- GAO product page HRD-80-2
- Finding type
- gov_survey
- Finding
- GAO documented the Navy's asbestos-protection program: asbestos insulation was used widely in naval vessels of the WWII era, and Navy policy removed it only when damaged or required for repairs (1975 policy, modified 1979). Program-level context for the era in which this hull was built; it postdates the ship's loss by 35 years and does not name LST-282 or any LST.

- Finding type
- historical_record
- Finding
- No qualifying ship-specific asbestos record located: no asbestos survey, abatement contract, hazmat disclosure, or docketed asbestos case naming LST-282 was found in the public sources searched (see search_ledger). CourtListener returned zero opinions for 'LST-282', 'USS LST-282', and 'LST 282'; the two docket-level 'LST-282' hits are name collisions (a civil-rights exhibit and a bankruptcy invoice part-number fragment), not vessel or asbestos references. The hull itself sank in 1944 - there is no surviving structure to survey.

- Limitations
- Absence of a located public record does not prove absence of asbestos aboard - era construction practice makes asbestos aboard plausible but unproven for this hull. Wreck access, postwar salvage, and any wartime-material documentation are unverified. Does not establish or defeat any claim of exposure or legal eligibility.
